Jesus and the Angels

Not Felipe’s brother and Mike Trout’s team, but sermon notes on Hebrews 1: 4-14 God spoke to us through his son. Following Jesus is like a race.

Emil Zatopek, the Olympian, first started running because his boss made him, came back in second out of many. By following Jesus is just the beginning the race.

Jesus is superior to the angels. The Bible doesn’t tell us everything about God, but it tells us everything we need to know about God. Better means a different kind.

Reasons why Jesus is superior to the angels…why is this relevant? Back in those times people were more tuned in to the spiritual and supernatural. In the future people won’t become more agnostic but more pagan.

The old covenant was given through angels, many believed . Gal 3:19 to a mediator. The new covenant is superior, given by Jesus.

Why is Jesus superior to the angels?

1. Because of Jesus’ relationship with his father. Verse 5. Psalm 2.  When J was baptized God said’This is my son.’ Jesus wants 100% of our lives.

2. Because of Jesus’ unchangeable nature. v 6. God can make angels to be different things to serve him: earth wind fire etc. our focus should be on Jesus. We worship in different ways, but we’re here to worship Jesus, not created beings like angels.

3. God rules forever. Humans aren’t worthy of that power, but Jesus is. God loves righteous and is joyful. We should as well. V 10-11. Garments wear out. This earth is like a garment. Psalm 10 . Heb 1:13-14. We can live forever in heaven under God’s rule.

The NT says a lot about angels. Several warnings.

1. Don’t worship angels Col 2:18 John wrote The Revelation and was tempted to worship the angel. Our message should be the same as the angels. Angels play zone defense as opposed to everyone having their own individual guardian angel.

2. Beware of false angels. There’s a lake of fire for satan and his angels. 2 Cor 11 false apostles. No wonder as satan disquises himself as an angel of light.  Don’t add extra stuff to the simple message of Jesus. Jesus + nothing = everything. When God looks at us, he sees Jesus.

3. Use angels as a role model to how I should behave. Worthy is the lamb who was slain. Angels serve and love Jesus above everything else.

JOHN SMOLTZ [SABR Bio] is the only pitcher with 150 NL wins and 150 NL saves - 211 wins and 154 saves. He also had two AL wins. He passed Whitey Ford to become the first pitcher to win more than ten postseason games in a career. He owns 15 postseason wins, the 11th coming 30-Sep-1998. As a youngster, he would imitate the radio stylings of Tigers’ announcer Ernie Harwell. Smoltz, born in Detroit in 1967, grew up in Lansing, Michigan, just 90 miles NW of Detroit. Harwell was a DET broadcaster 1960–1991, 1993–2002.
