Rules for Wedding Guests

Article: rules for wedding guests. In these days of everyone doing whatever they want, these rules are just common sense, and being respectful of other people. Don't think you can break one of these rules and escape the notice of the bride and groom, and their family.

1. Only the bride wears white.

2. No babies or kids (unless approved).

3. Don’t assume an invitation for a plus one. Space is limited, and receptions are expensive.

4. No big announcements to overshadow the wedding, such as pregnancies or engagements.

5. No one uses the microphone unless approved by the bride (singing or speeches).

6. Any questions should be directed to mother of the bride. Don’t bother the bride.

7. No boring people. No wallflowers. Everyone should be having a great time.

8. If you haven’t met the bride or groom, you aren’t invited. A bride shouldn’t be meeting people for the first time at her wedding.

9. Wedding guests should not be rude, or they will be kicked out.

10. Guests should not take pictures or videos during the wedding ceremony.

11. No guests on the dance floor during the first dance.

12. Guests should wear something presentable to the wedding.

13. Let the official wedding photographer fulfill his obligations to the bride before making special requests.

14. Do not stand when the bride enters - until after the mother of the bride stands. If the mother of the bride doesn't stand, then you shouldn't either. 

15. If you RSVP, show up for the wedding and reception. Because you RSVP’d, others weren’t able to be invited. At minimum inform the family, so seating charts can be rearranged.  

16. Do not attend a wedding you are not invited to.

STEVE GARVEY [SABR Bio] a Florida native who was drafted by the Twins. He turned down Minnesota to attend college. Later drafted by the Dodgers. Won the NL MVP in 1974 & won the All-Star Game MVP twice, in 1974 & 1978. He was also named MVP of the 1978 & 1984 NLCS. He had three seasons in the majors with 100 runs batted in and 200 hits. He actually did it four times, in 1974, 1978, 1979, & 1980. He was a Spartan at Michigan State University. Garvey holds the consecutive games played mark at 1,207, the NL record. He passed Billy Williams’ mark of 1,117, but fell short of the 1,307 mark held by Gehrig teammate Everett Scott.

The Tree Man

I watched “The Tree Man” on Amazon Prime, about Allman Brothers pianist Chuck Leavell, who has played keyboards for the Rolling Stones since the 1980’s. He’s also played with Eric Clapton George Harrison, Julian Lennon, John Mayer, and other heavyweights in the industry. Leavell operates a pine tree farm south of Macon, and has been named Georgia farmer of the year.

I didn't have to look hard to find several pictures of my friend Tim Griggs with Leavell. Chuck often drops by Capricorn Records in downtown Macon, where Tim keeps his office.

Saturday morning golf. After losing so many balls on Tuesday, this morning was like Christmas.

1. Decent drive off tee. Found at least three balls  along the right side of the fairway. Made an okay chip as well.

2. Hit my 3 wood off the tee, straight but short. Didn't look great, but chipped it onto the green. And I found three more balls. Could've picked up a fourth, but didn't want to be greedy.

3. Poked my tee shot right, down near the fourth tee box. Found two balls as I tromped down the hill in the rough. My chip sailed left, but it made it between two trees back onto the fairway. Chipped onto the green.

4. Hit my hybrid off the tee to the left fringe. Found one ball behind the tee box, and another in the rough. Good chip onto the green, but the putting was hard on the wet greens.

5. Pounded my 3 wood off the tee, all the way to the green. Robert had hit his tee shot right, and I poked around in the rough looking for his ball. he finally found his ball, and I found two of my own. 

6. Hit a good drive off the forward tee, then a good 5 iron out of the rough. Skidded an 8 iron that rolled onto the green. Then three putted. There were three balls waiting for us on the green. I picked up two. That made 14 for the day. So far.

7. Sliced a drive up the hill, up under the next to last tree. Poked a 5 iron across the fairway, then lost a ball when my approach sailed left. My chip stayed right, and I never found it in the rough. Only 12 balls ahead now.

8. Hit a worm burned off the tee, but it got a good roll down the hill. Bad lie with the ball below my feet. Shouldn't have hit the hybrid. Flub. Seven iron stayed left. Good chip, then a three putt.   

9. Tee shot stayed right. Found one ball in the rough, but lost one in the woods. A typical round. At least my bag had more balls when I left. I finished plus twelve. A record?

Drove to WalMart to get a case for my phone. Decent selection. Happy with my choice. Felt like I should've worn a mask inside. Same at Dollar Tree across the parking lot. Then across Cobb Parkway to Central Thrift, which has replaced the Atlanta Union Mission Thrift Store. Cleaner and rows and rows of goods. Passed on a nice swimsuit, but nabbed an Avengers casual shirt. Sweet.

Later I drove Ceil to Dekalb Farmers Market. The sun came out full force, and the car overheated. Had to turn off the AC and limp some on surface streets with the windows down. July has been one car problem after another. Not fun.

Friday: last day of the month at work. Lots to do. Ran my three miles before work. After work I made an appearance at the office gathering down the street at Medlock Tavern. VP Eric wanted to talk shop, and Braves replica rings. I grazed on the appitizers, but didn't stay for the main event: arm-wrestling. Home to watch Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

Braves Beat

Braves won again Wednesday night, though all the nit-pickers weren’t happy that a reliver gave up a few runs. Better then than in a closer game. It was Snitker’s 500th win. The key is for Smith and Minter to get into postseason form by the end of the season. Both were lights out against Houston in the World Series, weren’t they? GM AA isn’t afraid to wheel and deal at the trade deadline, if not before. I think they’ve been making moves this week.

I’m hearing the experts on social media say they should trade Acuna and his cheap long term contract for Ohtani, who only has two years on his contract. AA would only do that if he could sign Ohtani to a long term contract. But if Ohtani gets hurt, you’re down one of your best pitchers and hitters.

C was at The Table on Delk women’s ministry last night. I had eaten sandwiches at work for an early supper. Watched the shocking developments on the new episode of Only Murders in the Building, with guest stars Tina Fey and Andrea Martin. Just what the show needed, another actor named Martin. Back in the 80’s Andrea had starred on SCTV with Martin Short.

Up early to run three miles Wednesday morning. Faster than Monday. Yesterday we received a memo reminding us not to let others into our locked office. Of course today I forgot my key card. I asked Crazy John to let me in, but he said he couldn’t (he did anyway). Take that, human resources!

Currently five emails in my in box. If I hustle I can knock them all out. But. They. Just. Keep. Coming. One. After. Another.  

Listening to the book “The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a Shallow Year”. Early 2013 / late 2014. Not really my thing (not even close), though it reads like a daily blog. His assistant had been tasked with putting the daily blurbs together, through her conversations and interactions with him. I need an assistant like that. Perhaps when I win Mega Millions. I’d also become part owner of the Braves, Falcons, or Hawks, and work to be invited to become a member of Augusta National. That’s my deep look at a shallow year.

First Bite: BBQ Barn

Drove straight to Lavonia this morning, with a stop at Hardees for an omelet biscuit, cinnamon roll, and diet Dr. Pepper. Arrived at the same time team member Alex drove up. Since we bought Fanello Industries, their employees are now fellow coworkers as well, subject to the same difficulties as us Norcross employees. I’ve been working with Jamie for years, but have only met her in person like two times. Got to see Todd and Don and Todd and met Vickie and Kim for the first time. Todd and I were laughing about him finally getting me out of the office for a visit, which I appreciated. Fanello is good people. I finally hit him up for a nice Fanello vest, so Jamie and Patty dug one out for me – and a nice long sleeve t-shirt as well.

Omar directed Alex and me to lunch at the BBQ Barn, an old moss-covered shack behind the old Lavonia railroad station in Lavonia’s charming downtown, under the big oak tree. BBQ plate, Brunswick Stew, potato salad. After we sat at the cleanest of the two picnic tables the smoke from the cooker started blowing on us. The smell was heavenly, but the smoke bothersome (hours later my shirt still smells of the smoke). Eventually we moved to the dirtier table.

Alex told me details and secrets about how he lost 60-something pounds – mostly from only eating one meal a day. I told him I’ve been trying to follow his plan, with decent success. He said that when he hit a plateau, he had to buckle down and get stricter with the diet, fasting, and exercising. Good advice. Two of Alex’s secrets: the Renpho Smart Scale, and the Life Fasting app. I was actually taking notes.

Despite all the diet talk, on the drive back I stopped by the Baskin Robbin in Commerce for a pint, since I was on a company sanctioned trip. Half blueberry cheesecake and half pralines ’n cream. Great, even though they didn’t have my favorite: chocolate peanut butter.

Not much from last night. Supper was a chicken in a sauce over rice (above). Ceil baked up some beets, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables. That was all I ate yesterday, save for the ten ounce protein shake at lunch. I’d been at the same low weight all week – until today’s feasts. Tonight Ceil goes out with Regina, so I can skip supper.

Watched the new episode of Extraordinary Attorney Woo. That show just gets better and better. Tonight I watched “The Tree Man” documentary on Amazon Prime, about Maconite Chuck Leavell. He who played with the Allman Brothers and Rolling Stones. Chuck still lives a quiet existence outside Flag City. Coworker Josh tipped me off on the show. Josh attends Westside Presbyterian Church with the guys who started Matthew’s Monday Night Garage – named after their small group Bible study locale. Here's the setup at MNG, with M in white.

I am listening to The Andy Cohen Diaries, read by the author. I think it will help improve my writing, especially on the mundane day to day experiences I so often bore you with. Andy recaps his day, but adds semi-interesting quips, stories, or observations. Probably some are from him and others from his assistant who compiled the data. While I am not super knowledgeable about Cohen (I had to look him up on line), Andy is/was super-involved in pop culture. Also a fan of his hometown St. Louis Cardinals, so he can’t be all bad. He named his dog after former Cardinal hurler Michael Wacha. Friends with several of my favorites: Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker (aka SJP), her husband Matthew Boderick, Jimmy Fallon, former Cardinal Jim Edmunds, and acquaintance John McEnroe – who wears Bjorn Borg underwear.  Cohen and I live in two vastly different worlds.

TY COBB  [SABR Bio] was Charlie Gehringer’s first manager in the majors. Charlie joined the Tigers in 1924 where Cobb had been managing since 1921. Cobb played spring training games with lead insoles so his shoes would feel light during the season. He is reputed to be the first to swing multiple bats while on deck during games. He needed the fewest games to join the 3,000 hit club, in his 2,135th game.

Saturday night we're babysitting this little angel.

Golf: Keeping Score

Most golfers keep score in relation to par. After today I’m going to use a different system: the number of golf balls found versus the number lost. One of the drawbacks to playing golf alone is that it’s hard to tell where my ball goes. Probably set a record for golf balls lost. Sometimes I can play nine holes with the same ball. Not today.

1. Lost three balls off the first tee, all right into the woods. Then later a fourth ball, also into the woods to the right. Hit a lot of balls on the first hole.

2. Found a ball after hitting my tee shot. Hit my approach onto the green, but missed the long par putt. And the bogey comebacker.

3. Lost ball in the high grass, down the hill to the right. Then hit my mulligan onto the green, and “parred” the hole.  

4. Couldn’t find my first tee shot, that stayed right, then bounced right, probably into the bushes. Hit mulligan onto the green, hole high. Second straight “par”.

5. Hit two decent tee shots. “Bogey”.

6. After two good drives off the forward tee, I hit two good 5 iron shots. Couldn’t find either one. Hit a good chip onto the green. Found a ball when I looked in the cup.

7. Lost ball when my approach shot rolled off the green.

8. Skulled an approach shot that rolled off the back of the green, never to be found.

9. Lost a tee shot that stayed right, into the woods.

Final tally: 11 lost balls, less 2 found balls = 9. I hit enough shots to say I played 18 holes, meaning I lost a ball on every other hole. Sometimes I “have” to cut my workout short to get to work. Not this morning. Didn’t hit the golf ball well, and often hit two or three balls on all nine holes. Took my time.

Am I hearing that most of the covid vaccines guard against the variants that are already out – but not effective against the newer variants that keep coming out. Take vitamins B, C, D, and Zinc. When I’m in a crowd (like yesterday’s funeral) sometimes I will think about it. Doesn’t seem to be as big a deal as it used to be.

Several people asked about David Hurt at the funeral. On my drive back to the office I tried to call him, and left a message. Later we swapped text messages. Last night we received an invitation to a “stock the bar” shower for young Margaret Hurt and fiancé Matthew, down on Clifton Road near the Candler Park golf course. In September. Great – wine expert Haley will be judging what everyone brings. LOL.

TRIS SPEAKER  [SABR Bio] hit more doubles in the major leagues than anyone else ever has or likely, ever will - 792 doubles. It is just as likely that his record for outfield assists will stand the test of time - 449 career outfield assists. Babe Ruth called him, “…the finest defensive outfielder I ever saw.” Legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice called Speaker, “perfection on the field.” 

Like a Chickfila, Wendys tore down the old franchise at Peachtree Parkway & Spaulding and rebuilt. The new store has much faster service. And evidently the sink to wash your hands is located OUTSIDE the restrooms. Now everyone will know who washes their hands, and who doesn't.

Stranded Again

After having to get my car towed to the shop Thursday morning for a new starter, I thought I was in the clear. Not so fast.

Friday at lunch I ran three errands, parking and getting out of the car at each stop. Then I clocked out at 5:13 pm (early for me) and was still one of the last people to leave the office. And my car wouldn't start. Thought it might be the remote key battery. Called Ceil to come get me. Then called the customer service line twice, and then a dealer. Changed out of the hot jeans into shorts and t-shirt. C arrived. We went to Publix for a new battery for the key. Got back but the car still wouldn't start. C called AAA. While waiting for them we went back to Publix. AAA said I needed a new battery. The old one was 4 years old. AAA got the car going. Was almost nine by the time we got home. All this after getting new brakes and the emissions test. And a new starter and transmission problem. And a headlight recall.

Saturday: up early Saturday to golf. Then back home. C drove down to go to the farmer's market at the Carter Center with Anna. Later I took Ceil's car for a wash and emissions test. Watched a good movie after supper: Persuasion, in the Jane Austen genre.

Slept late Sunday then Sunday School, with 25 in attendance. Good lessons from Revelation 2. I'll share the notes when I type them up. Every few years JFBC gathers all their missionaries from around the word in one spot, for a week of rest and refreshment. Perhaps we'll go in 2024.

Then we drove to Vinings for an estate sale. Nice little neighborhood. I dropped C off then stopped by McDonalds for a snack. There was a special on the app for free fries and drink with any purchase. Back home I worked until almost 9 pm cleaning upstairs and laundry, washing and folding load after load after load.

Watched the first two episodes of the ESPN+ Derek Jeter documentary. Very good. As a kid he wanted to grow up to play shortstop for his favorite team – the Yankees. His grandmother lived in New Jersey and was a Yankees fan. She had attended a famous game, perhaps DiMaggio's last game. C even woke from her nap to watch, and stopped the show when she went outside.

M worked late on Friday and even more Sunday. Had Saturday and Monday Tuesday off. Works like Wed-Sun.

Braves took 2 of 3 from the Angels. They've passed 2 million in attendance, and are pushing for a couple more million. With 27 more home games, they'd have to average almost 40,0000 a game to top three million. So far this year the Braves trail only the Dodgers and Cardinals in attendance, and ahead of media darling Yankees and Mets. Just announced: 3rd base coach Ron Washington bobblehead Sept 20th. They should've made his windmilling arm into a fan.

Up early to the gym Monday morning. Ran three miles. For supper Ceil cooked spaghetti and meatballs. Steamed broccoli. M ate with us. On Friday night W&MC are going to Monday Night Garage to see M. Watched an hour long special on UGA's championship season. Then Young Sheldon.

Got to the office this morning to find over 50 emails, after finishing yesterday with less then five. Was on the phone making work calls for half the trip. Traffic was heavy, and the GPS routed me all over the place. Ponce. 285. 85. Oakcliff past where I worked for Mr. Suggs. Peachtree Industrial. For lunch I cashed in a Wendys coupon. AAA came today to install a new battery in my car.

TERRY STEINBACH [SABR Bio] is the only player to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat AND his first All-Star game at-bat. First MLB HR was 12-Sep-1986 off future All-Star Greg Swindell. First ASG HR was 12-Jul-1988 off Dwight Gooden. No American League catcher has ever hit more home runs in a season. He hit 35 HR in 1996 for OAK, all in games where he was the catcher. He attended the University of Minnesota [Golden Gophers].

I Saw Her Today at the Reception

Glad I attended Bill Dukes funeral. Stephanie hasn’t changed. The quarterback princess. Has four beautiful daughters who doted on her. Billy looks the same, with a few distinctive grey hairs. Looks like his mother. He gave a moving, Godly memorial. Well spoken. My teaching him in 5th grade Sunday School must’ve had an impact, huh? He’s a stay at home dad. His wife is CFO at Truist Bank. She negotiated the merger between SunTrust and that other big bank, I'm told. Billy gave me a big hug. He remembered his dad’s favorite story about me: the time I wore a bathrobe to an early AM mighty mite game. Tracy had forgotten, but I remembered that Billy had sung at Stephanie’s wedding. Stephanie spoke as well. Kathryn looked good, considering. As expected the sanctuary was packed. Reid said the last time there were so many people at a funeral was for Bill’s first wife.

Others in attendance: Reid and Edie. Kelly Curran let me hang with her, mingling with folk we hadn’t seen in years. Marnie flew down for the service. Sister Audra and mother Pam. Sarah Reed. I missed Ginny Greene. Got to speak with Tracy for a long while. We talked about the old mighty mite days as well, how her mom had lobbied David Downing to let girls play – then the girls quickly became the leading scorers. Ron Watts and wife Julianne. Deborah Light. Her brother Jimmy drove down from Dalton. Frank Gudger and wife Babs. Craig MacKenzie and wife, and lookalike son Peter. Daughter Kate is in London, performing for a Christian group for kids. Craig is 73 and evidently not yet retired. We talked heart health. Randy Scoggins was showing off pictures of grandkids. The Mitchells and Ramseys. Jeff Bunch and wife. Scotland and Peggy Wright. Jerome. Peggy Lentz. John Roma and his pal Dave Randolph. I didn’t get to speak to Dock. Saw George from Taqueria but missed speaking to him. Whitney Anderson. John Condra. Drew Kelly. Barbara Brown. Betsy Anderson. Pam Mullen said she missed me on Facebook. Kelly Clark Lewis has retired from teaching. Evidently she’d moved from East Cobb. Didn’t get to ask where.

I don’t know how to set up a Zoom call, much less on a laptop. I can JOIN a Zoom call if someone sends me an invitation. Our Christmas card year before last, where each family member was in their own box, was supposed to be like a Zoom call.

The current count of new alternate NFL helmets is 14. Predictably, six are black. Makes sense for the Saints, who actually wore black helmets in the preseason back in the late 60's. Not so much for the Cardinals, Eagles, Panthers, Jets, and Redsk - I meant Commanders.
