Binge Weekend

Watched a bunch of movies this weekend.

My All-American. Ever hear of Texas DB Freddie Steinmark? Tough, small, scrappy, helped lead the Longhorns to the national championship in 1970. After beating Arkansas in the season finale, Steinmark was found to have bone cancer. His leg was amputated just days later, but he was on the sidelines when Texas played in the Cotton Bowl. He passed away 6 months later. A real tear jerker.

Ghostbusters 2, starring the original cast. Can't remember if I had seen it before.

Unplugging, with Eva Longoria. A couple goes off to the wilderness for a weekend, with unexpected results.mLea Thompson guest stars as a crazed pickup-drivin gun totin country woman.

Jumanji: The Next Level. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart Danny Glover Danny DeVito. As good as its Jungle predecessor.

The Big Year, with birdwatchers Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Rashida Jones. You don't realize there's a nice moral to the story until you're at the end.

Which Brings Me to You, a romcom filmed on the Jersey shore, with the NYC skyline in the distance.

Love, Divided – about next door neighbors separated by only a wall. They can hear each other, so they start talking.

Anyone But You, a romcom set in Australia. Nice scenery.

Monday night I watched The Book Club: The Next Chapter, with Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Craig T Nelson, and Andy Garcia.

Movies releasing this week on Netflix: A Man in Full (Jeff Daniels), John Mulvaney Presents Everybody's in LA, and Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted, the PopTart Story (May 3).

Those reward things are tough. I have a bunch of focus group rewards that I need to cash in. Need to apply them to our Amazon account, where C is always buying things. But if she knows there are rewards, she would just buy extra. When I recently bought a pair of Cole Haans to wear to church, I was able to pay for them with the proceeds from selling bobbleheads. Heck signing up for the Peachtree Road Race is an ordeal. Lots of questions and blanks to fill in. Every other question is do you want to buy this extra t-shirt or that extra reward, etc etc etc.

I am surprised I haven't fallen yet, or had a car crash. Almost fell this afternoon while walking Winnie. My other friend Reid's longtime pet dog passed away this weekend. Always so sad to lose a pet.

Ceil flew pack from Paris to Washington yesterday. Arrived back in Atlanta at noon today.

Some ranked the Falcons draft as the worst in football. Committed to two high priced QBs. Second pick a Clemson defender too unpolished to be picked so high. Picked a RB after drafting a stud RB Robinson in the first round last year. Needed to get as many quality defenders an O linemen as possible.

Life is still too busy. Left home Friday at 5 pm. Stopped by RaceTrac and Arbys on the way down to W&MC’s. Was able to get Millie and Shiv to get without too much fanfare. After Millie went to bed (without too much crying), Shivvy and I had a nice time looking at the pictures on my phone. Saw the end of the Braves game and more of the NFL draft. Will got home at 1045, so I didn’t get home until 1130.

Up early on Saturday to golf. First time in over a month. Played with fellow early bird Paul. Hit the ball well off the tee, especially on one, 6, 7, 8, and 9 (the longest holes). In fact my drives on the last four holes were some of my longest ever (but that’s still not that long). Afterwards I stopped by a Goodwill, then met up with Anna at Peachtree Battle. On the way home I grabbed a free pizza at RaceTrac. Breakfast, lunch, and supper.

After meeting REM’s Mike Mills, I hit a nearby thrift store and bought a nice shirt, then drove out past Woodstock to the Outlet Shops of Atlanta. Hoped to exchange my new Cole Haans for a smaller size, but couldn’t make the sway at the store. Wasted trip. Stopped by another thrift store on the way home.

Saturday was a 13000 step day, probably my most active day since my sciatica acted up. But all the activity has me feeling better. So good that I went back for golf on Sunday morning. Teed off at 640 am. Decided to leave my woods in the bag and only used my irons. Good call. I needed the work. Hit three balls on every shot. Still made decent distance off the tee on the longer holes. Was putting for birdie on the long par four 6th hole, after a great long 5 iron and 6 iron. Parred the long uphill par three 9th hole for the first time ever: a decent 5 iron off the tee, chipped to 5 feet, and drained the putt.

Nissan Altimas were never my favorite. Too many out on the road. I always considered Nissan a third choice, behind Honda and Toyota, ahead of Mazda, Kia, VW, Jeep, and Hyundai. Nowadays Kia is pressing Honda for the top spot. My father’s Altima had low miles, was well maintained, and in good shape. A no brainer to drive. But I had no idea that kids today consider Altimas a panacea. Imagine that.

That's Me in the Corner

Yesterday I went to a Q&A with REM guitarist Mike Mills, not far away here in East Cobb. Like me, Mills grew up in Macon, loves the Braves, and plays a lot of golf. Just turned 65. You’d be envious of the sporting events he’s attended: two Super Bowls, a World Cup, UGA games, etc. Goes to the Masters most every year. He’s currently in a band called The Baseball Project.

Mills was in town to auction off some of his sports memorabilia (above L&R), which included a batting helmet signed by Hank Aaron ($1000.00), several bats, bobbleheads, and autographed baseballs and photos. A framed picture of Mills throwing out the first pich at a Mariners game – to Ken Griffey Jr. He said he accumulated his items here and there. Once he was at an auction bidding for a tricked out golf cart for his father, but the bidding was fierce. Finally Mills leaned over to see who he was bidding against: Michael Jordan. One of the more expensive items for sale was a drawing of MJ. Selling for $1500.00. Proceeds from the sales go to his Mills Family Foundation, which contributes to needy charities in and around Athens.

The Q&A was hosted by Kevin McAlpin, host of the Braves pregame & postgame radio show. Mills spoke of getting his start in music, the early days in Athens playing in front of 50 people, which places they liked to play (Chicago and New Orleans, for different reasons), writing his hit song “Nightswimming” (the same notes over and over, which made it easy for frontman Michael Stipe to write the classic lyrics). Mills said back in the early 80’s the clubs would close early, so afterwards the students would migrate to an old farmer’s pond (he didn’t seem to mind) to swim and build bonfires. REM disliked opening for other performers, with two exceptions: both artists they greatly admired and wanted to learn from. He said that unlike sports and business, in music there were no winners and losers. When a band like U2 put out a great album, it inspired REM to create great music as well.

Mike became a Braves fan back in the 60’s, and became a season ticketholder after the 1991 season. Was never able to meet Hank Aaron. Was wearing his classic 1995 World Series t-shirt. Turns in all his golf scores to track his handicap, both good and bad. Currently a 19, but hopes to get it back down to a 16 this summer.

When McAlpin ran out of questions, he opened the floor for more. Some about the Braves, more about music. Hated that he missed Mickey Dolenz when he passed through, praising the former Monkee’s new release. The music had been written by Michael Nesmith’s son. Mills had once played at the same festival, in the set before Dolenz. After he finished, Mills stayed unstage to play guitar for “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer”.

Mills was asked about the green suit he’s worn in the What’s the Frequency Kenneth” video (Hollywood). Said that if he were to ever sell some of his music memorabilia, some of his classic suits would be sold (Mills was often the band’s most nattily dressed member). Would he write a memior? He’s considered it, but doesn’t want to profit by telling potentially hurtful stories at his bandmate’s expense. Unlike the Beatles, REM split all profits and royalties equally regardless of who wrote the music and lyrics.

I asked about his time growing up in Macon. He moved to Macon in 7th grade, and stayed until moving to UGA in 1982. He said that back in the 60s and 70s Macon was a great music town, though still greatly segregated. There was only one place in town where blacks and whites played music together. Mills said that Macon has come a long way since then.

Brought one of Matthew’s REM CD’s to get autographed. When it came my turn I didn’t have anything much to say. Same when we got our picture taken together. Mike put his arm around me and held on tight, but the result didn’t look worthy of posting on social media. Proposed captions: “That’s me in the corner” or “Two Macon boys” or “Shiny Happy People”.

Hadn’t been to the venue before: Duck’s Dugout, a sports memorabilia store at the corner of East Piedmont in East Cobb. Lots of cool merchandise, all out of my price range. Baseballs, bobbleheads, jerseys, photos, old magazines, helmets. Seats from old Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Turner Field, Tiger Stadium, Fenway Park, Comminsky Park. Old games. An old cigar store Indian. Met Duck, who earned his nickname as a Navy pilot. They’d hosted similar events for athletes, but this was their first rock star.

Saw David Hall and Scott Condra at Thursday night’s JFBC men’s dinner. Also Caleb’s dad. Sat with David R, his son, and my other friend Reid. Good eats: scrambled eggs, potatoes, strips of steak with peppers and onions. Cinnamon rolls could’ve been tastier, but you can’t have everything.

A Southern Seminary professor spoke about ways to prayer, including praying back chapters of the Bible to God. Particularly the Psalms or New Testament letters. Good reminders. I am blessed to have so many Godly Bible teachers to draw from, who are knocking it out of the park time after time. John Piper. Andy Stanley. Clay Smith. Louie. Dan Rice. Bryan Fox. Joe Mayfield. Jim Key. Matt. Reid Hall. David Reynolds. Jim Denison.

I should make a list of the ten greatest games I’ve seen. Will be hard for me to do. Stay tuned.

A cool grandfather name would be “Boss”. Or Dude, Bro, or Bud.

Friday night: babysat the two girls. By myself. Will had to work and MC had a dinner. Owned it.

Caitlin Clark signed the highest ever show contract for a woman, from Nike. Under Armour had submitted a generous offer, and adidas was in the hunt. Puma couldn’t offer more than $3 million.

82 year old Barbra Streisand has released a new song, her first in several years, in response to the rise in anti-Semitism. Man you Google anti-Semitism and as you type everything comes up except the actual term. It’s as if they don’t want you to find it. The world we live in. Protests and arrests on the Emory campus. George Soros is helped fund them. Protests at the King Center. I’m sure MLK is turning over in his grave.

As the Falcons Falcon

Falcons had the 8th pick in the draft because they were the 8th worst team, right? Plenty of needs: O line, pretty much everywhere on defense…particularly on the edge and at cornerback. Falcons had signed veteran QB Kirk Cousins to a huge contract, eating up even more of the already topped out cap space. Sure Cousins is old and coming off an achilles injury. Do the Falcons think he might not be ready for the season?

With so many other needs, why did the Falcons spend the 8th pick in the draft on another QB? One with two ACL surgeries under his belt? No spring chicken himself, Penix will be 28 when Cousin’s contract expires. Falcons gotta spend first round money to sign Penix. Even less money to plug all those other gaps they need. Inexplicable.

There are great QB’s in every draft. Could’ve have waited a year or two? Fan and media reaction to the Penix pick is overwhelmingly negative. The Falcons need to explain what their strategy is, if there was one. There was a clip of owner Arthur Blank having terse words with his GM moments after the pick. No other NFL team has two high priced QBs on the roster. Only the Falcons.

The Phenix pick sucks for several reasons. Age. Injury-prone. Some question his arm strength and throwing motion, others can't say enough good things about him. Three QB’s were selected ahead of Penix. Two more QBs were snapped up soon thereafter. Between Penix, JJ McCarthy, and Bo Nix, I would’ve drafted an edge rusher. McCarthy may not be Johnny Unitas, but I’d rate him above Phenix. Hopefully the Washington Huskies signal-caller will prove me wrong. Penix started his college career at Indiana, where he led the Hoosiers to more wins than they were used to.

So hard to root for the Falcons. Word is that Kirk Cousins wasn’t told of the pick until the team was on the clock. Cousins was said to be disappointed the team didn’t use the pick to fill a need. He’s not alone. Welcome to Loserville. The Falcons have had a top ten draft pick 28 times in their history – almost half of their history. Sad.

Falcons may be stashing Penix as the backup during the Cousins years, like the Packers did first with Aaron Rodgers then later with Jordan Love – but the Packers were a perennial playoff team. Rodgers was picked 26th and Love 24th. Packers had a 13-3 record the year before they drafted Love. Packers won one Super Bowl with Rodgers. Had they drafted another position instead of Love, perhaps they would’ve won more. QB is the most important position in the NFL. Just not sure the Falcons are in a position to make such a “luxury” move.

Right or wrong, the nation is laughing at the Falcons. The explanations coming from Flowery Branch are full of holes. If they wanted Penix so much, they shouldn’t have taken all that money on Cousins – breaking rules even to sign Cousins. Hard to make a top 8 pick on someone who won’t play for two years. What do the Falcons want to happen? For Cousins to get hurt? Play poorly? For Cousins to lead Atlanta to five straight Super Bowls – and Penix never sees the field?

Are the Falcons a better team after their pick? Phil Simms loves Penix’s strong arm, calling it better, more accurate than Mike Vick’s. But if the Falcons dump Cousins after two seasons, they take a $25 million cap hit. They’ve really painted themselves into a corner.

The Falcons new head coach said the Penix pick was best for the long term future of the Falcons. That’s great, but how long will the coach be around if the Falcons don’t have the players to win immediately? But if he gets increased production from QB, RB, TE, & WR perhaps that will swing close losses into wins. Bucs and Saints have better rosters, so it won’t be a cakewalk. At least Cousins called Penix to welcome to the team. Class act.

Should’ve watched the Sixers. Happy to see the Lakers flop again. Think Michael Jordan was ever down 0-3 in an opening round playoff series?

Home Boy

Since Saturday afternoon I have only left the house for only 30 minutes, on Tuesday evening. I’ve worked long hours. This past weekend I cleaned up the house and cut the grass. Still it seems like I’ve been so busy. So much more to do. Yesterday after wok I hit just a few golf balls in the yard. Still a little uncomfortable. Still might play on Saturday. Gonna take it easy until C returns, then I’ll hit the gym again in May. Might just be the treadmill.

I’ve really been enjoying working at home in the quiet for a change. Usually when I’m working at home I will turn on 680 the Fan sports radio, but the morning show is so bad. So is the late afternoon show. I’ve turned those off. I do still listen to Buck Belue at 10 am, and I really love Cellini & Dimino from 11-2. Two regular guys. Dimino is an expert on baseball.

Since I ate all my soft taco shells, I started making nachos: chips, black beans, chicken or beef, cheese, and BBQ sauce. Then in the oven to heat up. So much food here to eat, in the fridge and freezer and pantry. Last night I actually cooked: bacon egg & cheese sandwiches. Still have pizza, burritos, pot stickers, spaghetti sauce, chips, cereal, smoothies, nuts, cheese & crackers, popcorn, PB&J’s, hot dogs, yogurt, and more. Chicken if I want to cook it.

Tonight I’m attending a men’s dinner at JFBC on prayer. Steak, eggs, cinnamon rolls. It’s good that I’m going, but it’s just one more thing taking me away from work.

Man when I signed up for that men’s dinner I forgot the NFL draft was tonight. It moves slow so it will be easy to catch up. Falcons won’t draft until after 915. They don’t need to draft a QB or WR or RB in the first or second round (of course they did).

Guess I’ll have to catch up on the Thursday night CBS lineup later: Young Sheldon, So What About Todd, and Elsbeth. Some Christians I know will watch shows that are so bad: murder and killings and blood and stuff. I just can’t watch that stuff. Used to be when Ceil would be away I would catch up on movies I’d missed, but I haven’t been doing that lately. Might check out a newly released romcom on Netflix.

I am mixing drinks more these days. Not too big on mixing stuff with Coke, though sometimes I will mix in my fruit punch. And I will mix Coke Zero with Cherry Coke. It’s easier to mix almost anything with my Diet Mtn Dew: fruit punch, apple juice, etc. Reminds me: the past 2 days I forgot to drink my daily Mtn Dew. Then I went outside in the sun without a cap, and it was bright. Kinda had a headache. Drank my Dew this AM.

Yesterday Ceil lost her wallet at a museum in Paris. Drivers license, credit card, and debit card. She was despondent all day. This morning the museum called: they had found her wallet. C called me at 6 am to tell me the good news. Girl lives a charmed life. C is just so gentle and sweet. She doesn’t do things on purpose or spite or meanness. It’s just the way she is.

Ever hear the one about the guy whose wife lost her credit card. He was asked why he didn’t cancel the card. His reply: “The crook is spending less than my wife did!”.

Denison: our relativistic culture is rejecting objective truth and morality. NPR’s new CEO Katharine Maher suspended editor Uri Berliner in response to his essay criticizing the network’s progressive bias, a move that seems to reinforce his point. When she was CEO of Wikipedia, Maher claimed that “there are many different truths” and “I’m certain that the truth exists for you. And probably for the person sitting next to you. But this may not be the same truth”. Jesus would disagree. He told his disciples, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32).

One Million Hits

Great game pitched by Max last night, a “Maddux”. Reid remembered that last year on this date a Braves pitcher also pitched a gem. I checked my blog from last year. Strider pitched 8 innings 13 strikeouts 2 hits zero earned runs, a performance rarely seen in the past 120 years, according to a MSN article that no longer exists. Dock and Melissa and Drew and Nancy were at the game.

Speaking of my blog, it recently passed one million views. Did I mention this before? Currently at 1,023,225. Gets tons of hits from China and Russia and places like that. They probably use my blog for illegal purposes, spying and election interference and the like. And if you think one million hits is a big thing, remember that it’s taken me 20 years to hit that mark.

MICKEY COCHRANE [SABR Bio] was the first manager to lead his team to a 100-win season in his first year as manager. In 1933, Detroit finished 25 games out of 1st with a record of 73-79-1, fifth in the 8-team AL. Cochrane became the Tigers’ player/manager in 1934. They won 101 G, the AL pennant, and took the World Series to 7 games. He was the first player to win a league Most Valuable Player award with two different teams. Cochrane had been AL MVP in 1928 with Philadelphia. He won again in 1934, having led the league in no offense categories, but guided a previously lackluster squad to the pennant. Five additional Tigers received MVP votes, including five of the top 10 vote getters. Denison: a Harvard epidemiology professor published this article showing how: “Research suggests weekly service attendance is associated with better health” pointing to extensive evidence that “weekly religious service attendance is associated with lower mortality, lower depression, less suicide, better cardiovascular disease survival, better health behaviors, and greater marital stability, happiness, and purpose in life.” Also 40% of the US suicide rate from 1999 to 2014 can be attributed to declines in attendance at religious services. Another study finds declining attendance from 1991 to 2019 accounted for 28% of the increase in depression among adolescents.
