Back to the Basics

Major news: UGA is returning to block numbers on their football uniforms this fall. A big thumbs up. No details as of yet. I assume this is for every game. Was this Kirby's doing? He already put a stamp on the uniforms, phasing out the performance stickers on the helmets (another move I like - by the end of the season helmets look way too busy. Just look at Clemson). Just one more way UGA is so many light years ahead of Georgia Tech.

Fun fact: growing up in Latrobe PA, Arnold Palmer lived in Mr. Rogers neighborhood. Fred Rogers took golf lessons from Arnold's father, and was a grade ahead of him in school. Later in NYC, JFK rented an apartment in the same building as Fred.

Fun fact: in the movie Ferris Buehler's Day Off, when Ferris and friends go to the Cubs game at Wrigley Field, Ferris' girlfriend Sloane kept score of the game.

Fun fact: the Detroit Red Wings jersey worn by Cameron was donated by hall of famer Gordie Howe.

Professor: "I'm a notary if that helps."

Young Sheldon: "Just when I thought you couldn't be cooler."

I worked past 5:30 last night. Drove straight home, then had to backtrack to Stinky Kroger. Ceil cooked quiche, she said for the first time ever (we had eggs we needed to eat up). Took forever to cook, but it tasted great. Flaky crust. M ate with us.

Knocked out four miles on the treadmill this morning. Averaged 11:35 for the first three, and 11:47 for all four.

Ways to slow down the aging process: (1) get your sleep, (2) don't just sit there - keep moving, (3) eat healthy (low carb), (4) escape stress and calm your mind, (5) take cold showers, (5) space out meals to stimulate the metabolism, and (6) train with high intensity intervals.

GAYLORD PERRY  [SABR Bio]: Gaylord's brother Jim won the AL Cy Young Award for the Twins in 1970 and Gaylord finished second in the NL. Gaylord won it twice, the first to do so in each league: 1972 pitching for Cleveland then 1978 pitching for the Padres. A one-time Atlanta Brave, Gaylord was the last pitcher with 4 straight seasons throwing 300 innings each year. From 1972-1975, Perry had years of 342⅔, 344, 322⅓ & 305⅔ innings. In none of those seasons did he even lead the league. But while still with his original club, he led the majors in innings pitched in 1969 & 1970 with 325⅓ & 382⅔ for the Giants.

DENISON: how Billy Graham responded to criticism: he ignored it. Rather than dignify it with a response, he remained focused on his calling and trusted his critics to the Lord.

Cultural commentator Yuval Levin wrote: "How to Curb the Culture War", arguing for "distinct spheres of action, and boundaries on cultural and political conflict to make healthier common life possible. Our lives and moral commitments must not be compartmentalized into insignificance. We cannot dissolve our capacity to live with others in a diverse nation." Because Americans are ignoring boundaries, "people are dragging culture-war differences into places they don't belong, making it hard to trust each other, to live together, and to do common work." The result is a culture-war animosity that increasingly dominates many arenas of American life," a "mix of entertainment and politics that combines the worst of both." Levin proposes "a restoration of boundaries between distinct domains of life" recognizing "the humanity of neighbors, that expertise in one arena does not imply authority in another."

1. We should "stay in our lane" rather than claiming to have the last word on every issue we face.
2. Not good to win cultural debates and lose eternal souls.

3. Those who oppose us are not our enemies but fellow humans for whom Jesus died. The true enemy "has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ" (2 Cor 4:4). Rather than seeking to be cultural warriors, we should seek to be cultural missionaries.

Former Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal may be the only player in MLB history to execute an unassisted triple play AND collect three triples in one game.
