Weekday Golf

Thursday: worked until almost six again, spending almost an hour fixing a receiving error.

Ceil cooked a chicken dish, with two kinds of rice and spinach. The brown rice wasn’t good, so I mixed all the rice and spinach together. Final Jeopardy. Young Sheldon. Some of the NBA draft. Ceil cut Winnie’s hair, so I had to hold Winnie down.

Teed off at 6:08 this morning.

1. Just an okay drive off the tee. Barely made it out of the rough onto the fairway. Okay approach, just short of the bunker (after a flubbed first attempt). First chip over the green. Second try better, onto the green. Good long lag putt, then in for a “bogey”.

2. Had trouble with my tee shot, then hit a decent 3 wood short of the green. Practiced chipping four times. Two onto the green, two just off the green on the fringe. Sank a nice long putt for “par”.

3. More trouble hitting a tee shot. Finally hit a 6 iron down the hill. It rolled just behind a fence. Took relief and made two more decent chips, both to the fringe. Two putt for “bogey”.

4. Decent 3 wood that rolled off the back edge of the green. Three chips. Three putts. “Double bogey”.

5. Nice 3 wood off tee stopped on the green. Shot of the day (above). Then I three putted. Bogey.

6. Hit two drives off tee. First one was okay but sliced right. Never found it. Mulligan sailed low, but got a real nice roll. Hit a good hybrid low but long. Chipped onto the green, where the sprinklers were blasting full force. I’m sure I would’ve sank the long putt, but give me a “bogey”.

7. Two drives both sliced right, shorter than I would’ve liked. From under a tree in the rough I hit hybrid. First one low, second try better, but still short of the 150 yard marker. Hit a good hybrid, then a decent one – both short of the green. Played both balls: chip, long lag putt, then two more, dang it. Triple bogey.

8. Hit two drives, first low and left, the second high and right. Both shorter than I would’ve liked. Both wound up in about the same place. With the ball below my feet my first try was flubbed, then hit a good 7 iron to the right edge of the green. The sprinklers were blasting full force, distracting me into a 3 putt. I let my bag get soaked. Bogey.

9. Hit hybrid left. Mulligan was better, but still short. Played two balls. Second chip past hole to fringe. Good lag but missed the par putt. “Bogey”.

Finished at 7:24 am. Eleven over isn’t bad for me. There were seven guys lined up on the first tee, so I headed to work. My sciatica was hurting when I bent over anyway. Made it to work just after 8 am. A good morning.

Knocked out two tough tasks first thing: entered three debits and fixed another receiving error. Plenty to do.

JOE McCARTHY  [SABR Bio] was the second batter to face Babe Ruth in a regular-season professional game. McCarthy played outfield for the 1914 AA Buffalo Bisons of the International League. The Baltimore Orioles, Ruth’s firstt professional team, was also in the IL. On 22-Apr-1914 McCarthy batted second. Ruth was the starting pitcher. No one who’s managed more than fifteen MLB World Series games has a better winning percentage. McCarthy has an impressive .698 (30-13) record in the World Series. Joe is the first manager to win pennants with both National League and American League teams. He won the NL pennant in 1929 with the Cubs and the AL pennant with the Yankees, against the Cubs.
