Should the Hawks Retire Trae's Number?

Should the Hawks retire Trae Young’s number? Some say yes. Seriously?

They ask what Dikembe and Maravich ever did to get their numbers retired. For starters, the fans loved them. Was Trae loved by the fan base? Did Trae endear himself to the fans, or more often let them down? Was he too often injured when he was needed for key games and situations? Compared to the same for Deke and the Pistol? 

While I’m not sure what prompted the Hawks to retire the numbers they did. Maravich was named to both the 50th and 75th anniversary teams. Will Trae receive a similar honor?

Maravich also had his number retired by the Jazz and Pelicans. Mutombo also had his number retired by the Nuggets. 

In eight seasons Trae was named to the NBA all star team four times - BUT twice he was named as an injury replacement. He led the NBA in assists once. All NBA 3rd team once. 

Maravich was an All Star in 5 of his first 8 seasons. Led the NBA in scoring. Twice made All NBA first team, and twice All NBA second team.

Mutombo was an 8 time All Star (four times with the Hawks), named defensive player of the year 4 times (twice with the Hawks), led the NBA in rebounds twice (with the Hawks), and in blocked shots three times. All NBA second team once, and third team twice. 

In college Trae made one All America team, and led the nation in scoring with a 27.4 average. Maravich was a three time All America, and led the nation in scoring all three years with averages of 43.8, 44.2, and 44.5 ppg - setting scoring records that have remained untouched for almost 60 years. 

Maravich, Mutombo, and Dominique are in the basketball hall of fame. Will Trae receive such an honor? Reddit doesn't think so. Of all the halls of fames, the basketball hall seems easiest to get into.

Some yahoos said if Dominique’s number was retired, then Trae’s should be as well. Don’t get me started on that comparison. Wilkins was a 9 time All Star, led the NBA in scoring, made the NBA 75th anniversary team, won the dunk contest, and was all NBA first team once, 2nd team four times, and 3rd team twice.

Some reason that Trae's Hawks once fell just short of the NBA Finals. His number should be retired for that?

Caitlin Clark: Admirable?

Caitlin Clark is indeed great. People flock to see her. The straw that stirs the drink. Truly the goose that laid the golden egg. Sure there are other players who are talented, other stars. But what's with the effort to downplay Clark's accomplishments? Allowing the thugs in the league to beat Clark up, night after night? The NHL never allowed Wayne Gretzky to be beat up. 

I will admit - Clark doesn't shy away from contact - she goes after it. The drives to the basket. The glare. She initiates contact, and complains to refs - almost incessantly. Not exactly the type player that I usually admire. But the type tough player that you'd think would earn the respect of the other players. Notice I didn't say peers.

Why do other players have Clark in such contempt? Such a bad look. Sure looks like jealousy. Would they rather play before fewer fans, get lower TV ratings, have less money for player salaries? From the outside, this contempt doesn't make sense. What changed that caused the sudden surge in WNBA popularity? Sure there are other new players coming into the league, joining a galaxy of established stars, but so many refuse to give Clark the credit that she so obviously is due. 

When Tiger burst onto the golf scene, winning tournaments and majors and sucking up the attention and sponsorship revenue - how did the other players react? They didn't tear him down. They reveled in the higher purses. They worked on their games, raising themselves to higher levels in an effort to compete. Together, Tiger and his contemporaries reinvented an even greater PGA Tour. Would be nice if the WNBA could be able to do the same.  

How will this end? Will the WNBA figure out that Caitlyn is a treasure? Will Clark's attitude change? I'm sure it's frustrating to get beat up so much. Seems like Clark and the league need to meet somewhere in the middle. For sure the WNBA is more watchable when Clark is playing, as opposed to when she is sitting on the sidelines.

Similarly, a website ranked Arch Manning as only the tenth best player in the country. Perhaps just an effort to get clicks. Arch is the odds on choice to win the Heisman, and will most probably be the number one overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. 

Saw a list of great Great UGA baseball players. Of course all were from the last few years. Notable omissions: Derek Lilliquist. Jeff Treadway. Jeff Pyburn. Buck Belue. Dave Fleming. Chris Carpenter. and Glenn Davis. Spud Chandler was an AL MVP with the Yankees. He still owns the MLB record for the highest winning percentage in history.

SHOHEI OHTANI  [B-R Bio] is the only player to win more than one MVP unanimously. All four of Ohtani’s MVPs, 2021, 2023, 2024 & 2025, were unanimous. He is the only player to win a National League MVP after winning an American League MVP. Only he and Frank Robinson have won MVPs in both leagues. In 2025 Ohtani's three bBobblehead days were 02-Apr, 15-May, and 27 Aug.

Best Ever NBA Players

Youngsters these days talk about the greatest ever NBA players, and list far more current players - hardly any back before Kareem and Wit. No Jerry West, John Havlicek, Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson. 

Not sure if the Basketball Reference Value over Replacement Player measurement can be trusted. Luka is already rated above Moses Malone, Chris Mullin, and Robert Parish. Lebron has 50% more value than MJ. I don't understand - is it simply a longevity thing?

I will admit that Lebron is an all time top ten player, and there are other current players who may also belong in the top 20. But just scanning the list of hall of farmers, here's my top 20 all time.

For those listing current players in their top 10 all time / best ever, ahead of those hall of famers that I've listed - the HOF is full of other players just as good, if not better. How soon they forget Moses, Willis Reed, Carmelo, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Dwyane Wade, Manu Ginobili, Lou Hudson, Walt Bellamy, Chris Bosh, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, Dominique.

Women's Basketball: Worth Watching?

Angel Reese was traded from the Chicago Sky to the Atlanta Dream. Creates a twin towers situation with Brittney Griner. Atlanta gave up a staggering TWO first round draft picks for Reese. The city rejoiced in the news, as if she were the second coming of Michael Vick. She probably is. Perhaps Angel will have an impact on attendance. 

Evidently Angel had burned bridges in the Windy City, and the trade wasn't unexpected. So why give up two number ones? For the record, I am on the Dream's email list.

I learned about the trade when I went looking for the Dream's upcoming schedule. They'll be playing Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever in State Farm Arena. Want to go? Man, the cheapest Dream tickets start at like $70. Goodness.

The Gamecocks lost the national championship game. Women's basketball used to be a different brand of basketball than the men's game. More passing. More movement without the ball. Working to get an open shot. Sadly, nowadays the women's game is much worse. The women beat each other up inside, especially in the WNBA. It's the survival of the biggest. Instead of taking advantage of the resurgence in popularity over the past year of two, the women's game continues to receive bad press.

Saw Rick Ross on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. He mentioned that he hosts an annual car show at his house, the spread he bought from Evander Holyfield. I looked it up - it's a big deal. Probably not my thing. Tickets are pricey, though they find a charity. I noticed Ross named the property The Promised Land. I was learning this while studying Joseph's story in Genesis, where as Pharoh's lieutenant was able to save his family from famine. Joseph's elderly father was happy to be reunited with his long lost son - but still chose to be buried back in the land of his fathers - the true promised land.

Cars I like, in no particular order: Ford Ranger, Bronco, F150, and Raptor. Teslas, Honda's CRV, Passport, Pilot, and Ridgeline pickup. Toyota's RAV4, Highlander, Prius, and 4Runner. Nissan Frontier. Jeep Ricon. Subaru Crosstek and Forrester.

Ranking the NCAA Teams

Here's the KenPom rankings of teams in the men's NCAA basketball tourney. Takes each team's offensive ranking and defensive ranking. More weight to the offensive ranking, otherwise the lowest total of the two makes for the highest ranked team. 

Saw another tweet advising to stick with the top seeds more this year than ever, for similar reasons. Now Twitter's got these prognosticators in my algorithm, so I'm seeing even more of these NCAA tweets.

I used these rankings to pick my NCAA bracket, which called for just 2 or 3 upsets a long the way. My Final Four was Duke over Florida and Arizona over Michigan, with Duke winning the whole thing.

Are you filling out a NCAA bracket this year? I heard a good tip:  of the past 23 NCAA champions, 95% of them were Top 21 in offense and Top 44 in defense. Four teams have been as dominant as any team in the past few years: Duke, Florida, Houston, and Auburn. Seven other teams meet these thresholds this year: Tennessee, Alabama, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Seven "popular" teams missed these thresholds by large margins: St Johns, Missouri, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Purdue, Kansas. I'll post these rankings later this week.  

Duke is the first school in ACC history to win the conference football championship, the men's basketball championship, and the women's basketball championship in the same school year. 

We know all dogs go to heaven, but what about cats? Surely not.

Young adults aren't listening to radio any more. Nowadays podcasts are the thing. My take: I'd rather listen to a book than a podcast. Books are more permanent. I'll listen to the radio for background noise, when I don't have to pay rapt attention - like I would for a book or podcast. 

Cool car. Even has plaid seats. I might have to get me a job at the Department of Agriculture just so I can drive this bad boy.

Monday morning: went to the gym. Weights, sauna, treadmill. Stopped by Dollar Tree and McDonalds on the way home. The Dollar Tree clerk charged me wrong, and McDonalds got my order wrong. 

The Big Ketch: do they still have the restaurant in Roswell, or just the one in Buckhead? I'm told the Roswell location is still there. 

In honor of strikeout king JAY BUHNER [SABR Bio], 3,436 fans (including 46 women) shaved their heads. The “Bald-In” honored Buhner on 17-Jul-1997. It was his only All-Star season, but he also led everybody in K’s with 175, a total that would not placed him in the Top Ten in 2025. He hit more home runs than all but two other major leaguers 1995-1997. Here are the top 5: Marl McGwire 149, Albert Belle 128, Buhner 124, Griffey 122, Galarraga 119. March Madness

College basketball - did you hear that GT fired their head coach? Someone suggested they hire Bruce Pearl. Might be a good idea, but at his age he might not want the hassle of NIL and the transfer portal. UGA seems to be having a good year, but I don't follow it much either. 

Did I tell you about the sweepstakes where the winner and 3 friends get paid $100.00 an hour to watch the first Thursday or Friday of the NCAA basketball tournament - from noon to midnight - with a huge supply of Red Baron pizzas? I won't win, but it's fun to think about.

Some are saying that both teams were working together to get that NBA player to 83 points, that it wasn't legit. Some guy named Bam.  

Every time I title a post "March Madness", I get a few extra clicks. 

Team USA manager Mark DeRosa didn't realize USA needed to win to advance to the next round of the World Baseball Classic. And people wanted the Braves to hire him as their manager, after years on TV on the MLB Network. 

Six Feet Under - didn't realize they have a Cheshire Bridge location. Burger looks okay. Chicken fingers look better - comes with hush puppies. But do you really want to take a 91 year old with cancer to Six Feet Under on his birthday?

Helped Ceil out in the back yard this afternoon, cleaning out the flowerbeds and getting ready for spring.

Ceil doesn't like the microwave. I always push the 30 seconds bottom because that's fast and easy. If I need it to go longer I'll push the 30 second button again to make it a minute or 1:30. If it's something that doesn't need 30 seconds I just hit STOP after 10 or 15 seconds. Lately I've been cooking quesadillas on the big flat cast iron stovetop that Matthew left us. Ceil grills chicken and other items on it. 

Ceil cooked Lemon Chicken, roasted potatoes, and cole slaw. 

Sold a shirt that was too small for me. 

In the novel "The Correspondent" the main characther's pen pal in high school mentioned that she had received a reply to her letter to CS Lewis. In real life, Lewis wrote the following - still applicable today.

Why The Braves Are My Team

I’ve meant to write out an explanation of how the Braves have become my team, more so than Tech or UGA or the Falcons or Hawks.

I was a big Tech fan when I was in school. But in the 1980’s they had such awful seasons that I lost interest. It’s nice when they’re good, but I just don’t live and die with them. For sure this past weekend I was yelling at the TV as they let Wake Forest run all over them.

I liked Tech basketball in the 80’s and 90’s, but as their success dwindled and the players came and went, I lost interest in them as well. Too hard to follow them, and keep up and know the players.

When the Dawgs had such success in the early 80’s, it was easy to be a fan. I casually followed them ever since, perhaps a little more so since my kids went there, through the Richt and Kirby eras. When GT and UGA play, I usually cheer for the team that has the most to lose. On fall Saturdays I try to watch (1) UGA, (2) Clemson, and (3) Tech.

I’ve been a Falcon fan since the 1960’s. But I only follow them casually. They’re such heartbreakers that its hard to get emotionally invested. For sure I don’t hang on every play, but I’ll watch if I’m not doing anything else. We started watching the NFL more since Ceil got interested. I used to watch more until the uniforms got so ugly.

Back in the 80’s the NBA was in the height of its popularity. Bird and the Celtics. Magic and the Lakers. Ewing made the Knicks relevant. Hated Isaiah and the Pistons. I knew several players on just about every team. The Hawks were winners. I’d go to games with you, or with Hurt. But over the years my interest in the NBA faded as well, as there were fewer and fewer players I’d recognize. I do try to keep up with the Grizzlies through Lang, but the Hawks aren’t on my main radar screen (I don’t follow them on social media).

Back in the 80’s Bart Giamatti became baseball commissioner. You could tell he loved the game. His famous quote helped make me a fan. The movie Field of Dreams came out. I was collecting baseball cards, which helped me get to know players on other teams. I’ve always loved baseball’s history, and learned it from books and other resources like the Ken Burns documentaries.

I’d been a Braves fan from the 60’s, and they were easy to follow on TBS. It’s just easier to go to a Braves game than any other sport. I know the ins and outs. Then in 1991 the Braves started their run of division championships. I’d go to games every year. When we had kids, I’d take them. We’d go early for batting practice. Will loved chasing batting practice home runs.

I watched the movie Fever Pitch, and loved how Jimmy Fallon had his whole world revolving around his favorite team. I was collecting more and more Braves caps, jerseys, t-shirts, polos, socks, bobbleheads, and other nick knacks. I love the swag, a little too much.

Used to have jerseys from numerous pro football teams and a few MLB, but finally narrowed my collection down to the Braves, Falcons, and one UGA jersey. I pretty much only wear Braves and Stripers caps. I favor solid t-shirts, but have Braves jackets, hoodies, and qtr zips that I’ll ix. Also a couple of Falcons or Grizzlies. I do have Tech and Clemson gear to wear to games.

Our preacher just wrote a short essay about how baseball is the most Christian sport. In it he explained how he became a Red Sox fan as a teenager. Kills me how some people can be such good writers.

I am starting to think Happy Gilmore 2 is the greatest sports movie of all time. Not really, but maybe top five. It’s just the way literally everyone on social media describes anything these days. Everything is the GOAT. The movie did have the most successful opening weekend in Netflix history. I watched it again this weekend. Here’s a list of “Easter Eggs” hidden in the movie. Many think Scottie Scheffler was the unexpected star of the movie, and he did have several great moments. But I thought golfer Will Zalatoris had the most dramatic role of all the golfers.

My admiration for the movie was how Adam Sandler was able to write and produce such a great movie despite everyone’s tremendously high expectations. A decent storyline with several side stories, plus chock full of cameo appearances from a wide range of celebrities from sports and entertainment. Sandler was able to make Jack Nicklaus come off like the next Bob Newhart.

Saturday afternoon I was outside trimming hedges. My phone was inside the house but my watch said I had a call. My old high school teammate Jerry Anderson called again. He helps run a diner in Macon that serves soul food. Hopefully we can stop by tomorrow on the way to Hilton Head. We talked about our upcoming reunion. I stupidly asked him if he had been at our 40 year reunion. He graciously replied that he’d been tied up, and he had – almost literally. He served a 30 year prison term for drug trafficking. What I just learned was that he’s played college football in Tennessee. He regrets returning to Macon instead of getting a job in Tennessee.

Killing The Goose

Sports are great. But like the world we live in, sports isn’t the same as they used to be. I sure don’t watch as much sports as I used to, but I do try to stay up to date with all the local college and pro teams, as well as the Fever and Grizzlies and a few other favorite teams, and golf. Sorry but the more I see about the WNBA, the less there is for my to want to watch. Too much drama and fouling and violence, kinda like the NBA back when the Pistons used to beat up everyone. No one wants to admit how one player helped skyrocket league popularity, yet the league has done nothing to protect that player from getting beat up night after night. Others may think otherwise, but for a large percentage of fans, the WNBA is killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Now get off my lawn.

I wrote this before the WNBA all stars showed up wearing "Pay Us What You Owe Us" t-shirts, which were widely panned on social media. Insiders may think differently, but for us Average Joe's, it's a bad look. The players are well aware that the new $200 million TV deal kicks in next year, and salaries will be going up, another reason to maybe not protest. Caitlin may be  the one player who least needs to protest, but she wore the shirt in solidarity with her fellow players - the very ones who keep knocking her down.   

The Falcons have three prime time games this fall, and they’ll be wearing their throwback uniforms in all three games – including on the road at Tampa, when the Bucs will be wearing their orange throwback uniforms.

Did you watch the British Open? I’m never going to call it “The Open”. Scottie won again. Afterwards he talked about how the thrill only lasted two minutes, that is was more important to be a good dad and husband.

Similarly, there is a notable different between Joe Burrow and Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins on the Netflix show Quarterback. I like Goff and Burrow. Joe seems like a thoughtful young man. Cool that he bought the Batmobile. But Cousins, during a season of adversity, surrounded himself with family and friends, helped coach his son's football team. Did he hide his injury from the team? Can you fault him for wanting to play? Just the way he thinks about things is diffent. Humble dude. Respect.

David Hurt plays lots of pickleball, often against older, less mobile opponents. It reminded me of when we all used to play volleyball in the old SPdL gym, singles vs the choir or some other Sunday School class. Scott Atchison is still the organist at PRUMC. He was always a lot of fun. We weren’t roomates on choir tour, but once we traded to be together one night at someone’s house. As they drove us home from the church our hosts asked us what we ate for breakfast. Scott exclaimed “Quiche Lorraine!” 

What I need to do is start plotting on a map all the miles I walk / run. Perhaps a route that takes me to all the lower 48 states. Maybe from Atlanta to Alaska. I can check back in all my calendars going back to the 1980’s to plot those miles on the map as well.   

It is already hard for me to hear in crowded restaurants.

ICHIRO SUZUKI  [SABR Bio] broke George Sisler’s 82-year-old record with 262 hits in 2004. Sisler had broken Ty Cobb’s record of 248 in 1911 with 257. From 2001-2019, Suzuki played in 2623 MLB games plus 19 in the postseason, but never reached the World Series. He was the first rookie to lead the majors in All-Star voting, with 3,373,035 in 2001.

When baseball’s Hall of Fame held its inaugural election for enshrinement TY COBB  [SABR Bio] received the most votes of any candidate—222—98% of the vote.  Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner received 215 votes apiece (95%). Christy Mathewson got 205 votes (90.7%) and Walter Johnson received 189 (83.6%). In Cobb’s triple crown year of 1909, he led the majors in HR (9), RBI (107), and average (.377). His career highs were 12 HR (1921, 1925), 127 RBI (1911), & BA of .419 (1911). Casey Stengel said of Cobb “He was the greatest all time ball player. That guy was superhuman, amazing.” In 14 of his 24 seasons, Cobb’s doubles outnumbered or equaled his strikeouts.
