2001 Spy Plane Incident

 

Was reminded of the US spy plane that fell into Chinese hands in 2001. A Russian jumbo cargo plane, larger than the Lockheed C5 Galaxy, returned the spy plane fuselage to Dobbins AFB. The landing was on a Saturday morning, so I took the kids over to Cobb Parkway to watch the landing. A big plane.

Representative Larry McDonald died in a 1983 airplane crash. A 747 jumbojet airliner was shot down for drifting into Russian airspace, and was shot down by a fighter jet. Created an international incident. His wife finished out his term. A stretch of interstate highway was named after him.

New sports included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics: skateboarding, 3 on 3 basketball, sport climbing, karate, softball, baseball, surfing, and six team fencing events. Given the loud cheering fans at Japanese games, Olympic baseball be interesting for a change.

 

This coming Saturday looks to be a good football lineup.

Just had a thought: who subscribes to hard-copy magazines and newspapers any more? Those 20-40 or 40 & older? The decline in the magazine industry certainly has to do with the ever-increasing popularity of the internet, but I’d say the ever more liberal content published by the increasingly liberal “journalists” is being rejected by the subscribers, who in general are more conservative than those writing the liberal stories. It’s us older generations that more often subscribe to print media. Sports Illustrated’s print content is running off their subscribers. Contributes to the decline of their subscriptions. Who changed? Not the subscribers. The SI magazine content changed. Like if a cruise magazine only printed articles about vacations to the mountains.     

 

Example: this summer Sports Illustrated published an article by Michael Rosenberg (a writer I like) about whether next summer’s Tokyo Olympics will bring US citizens together - or drive them further apart. But the article itself was divisive. While these days I’m sure SI is more concerned with their web traffic, it seems like the magazines are showing up in mailboxes filled with articles most subscribers are in disagreement with.

I don’t watch much, but nowadays Fox News has several anti-Trump newscasters on air. Even Trump has attacked the network.  

 

Felicity and Lori: Ceil used to like Lori’s Hallmark Channel show “When Calls the Heart” set on the American frontier. I think it unrealistic that Lori played the mayor. Revisionist history.

 

 

I like the Amazon free shipping. Got home last night. Had left just after five but it was dark when I got home. There was a car in the driveway trying to deliver Amazon, but it was for 2209, across the street.  

 

Got a decent amount of work done yesterday. There’s always more. Ceil was at her women’s ministry. I cleaned up and did the dishes. Watched Fresh Off the Boat and the live performance of The Little Mermaid, with John Stamos. Packaged two eBay shipments and later sold yet another pair of sneakers (below). I still have too many. Yes a big kickoff to the college basketball season. Nice win by GT.

Years ago Ceil and I tried a Mexican restaurant at the Roswell Mill. We’d never been to it before. Nice deck overlooking a bunch of trees. The waiter spilt water all over Ceil. We never went back. Might drag Ceil to Buca di Beppo, an Italian restaurant on Mansell at 400. Dishes served family style. I’ve never been, but foodie coworker Jonathan has taken his young family. Thursday night the fam is getting together for Ceil’s birthday dinner at W&MC’s house.

 

I will have to check out the Diane Moody books. Right now I am reading my second straight WWII book. First was a Truman biography, the second on the defeat of the Japanese. I remember that interesting story about Reid’s icy cold maneuvers in Slidell.

GRIT GRIND

Friday evening Will came up for supper, since MC was busy. Brought Okie. Anna and Matthew home as well. Pork chops, tossed salad. Loaded up his big Toyota Sequoia with Anna’s mattress, bookcase, and other items. Anna had announced she was going to a wedding on Sunday afternoon in Decatur. Friday night after dinner she was checking her phone and noticed the bride had posted that she was “looking forward to tomorrow.” Anna figured out the wedding was Saturday, not Sunday. Good thing.

 

Saturday morning small group. Lessons are lined up with our Sunday School lessons in I Peter. Hustled home so M could drive my car to work. Watched ESPN College Gameday then mailed a package and got M’s Jeep’s emissions tested. Ate leftover meatballs for lunch. Turned on Wake Forest/NC State and took a nap. Slept through the start of UGA/FL.

 

Ceil and Anna had gone down to W&MC’s house. Later A went to her wedding and C shopped her way back home. I folded laundry and did the dishes. Supper was the leftover meatballs (I’m going to finish them off for lunch today). Watched a funny movie “Rewrite” starring Hugh Grant, Marisa Tomei, and Allison Janney.   

After Sunday School I drove over to SunTrust Park for season ticketholder Play Day. Started at 1100 am and by the time I arrived at 1130 the Delta lot was crammed. Headed downstairs first for lunch, as I knew the lines would be long all day. Roast beef sliders, grits & sausage, pimento cheese, curly fries, tater tots, cookies brownies. Later I went back to try the flatbread pizza ziti, and tossed salad. Saw a few people I knew. Joel Norman was there but I missed him. Watched a friend hit in the cage. Line was too long for me. Got my picture took with Leo Mazzone, Kris Medlin, Eddie Perez, and Kelly Johnson. Had wanted to see Walter Banks but he wasn’t there. Neither was my friend Miss Marion. Prizes were a Braves blanket and Sugar Skull bobblehead. Also bought a pair of green MLB St Patricks Day socks.

Since I was on Cobb Parkway I stopped by a few thrift stores on the way home. For some reason one of the stores had a bunch of new Memphis Grizzlies t-shirts. I love the light blue color. Bought one that said BELIEVE MEMPHIS. Will wear it in next year’s Peachtree Road Race.

Got home and was pretty tired from all the walking. Tried to crash on the couch. Loaded Anna’s Subaru with her chest of drawers and other stuff. She got down to W&MC’s for supper, but realized she’d left her sheets as well as the shelves for her bookcase.

Watched two movies: “This Beautiful Fantastic” (Ceil loved) and “The Bookshop” (not as good). Then a little Patriots/Ravens. Finished my baseball book “I Don’t Care if I Never Get Back” about the guys who drove 22000 miles in 30 days to see games at all 30 MLB ballparks. 

Might be feeling a little puny, now that I think about it. Got in a lot of steps Sunrday at the Braves gig. Wore my new more heavily-padded sneakers, but I think the not so great shoes were one of the reasons I was so tired afterwards. I think my CPAP dries out my tongue. My mouthwash might have alcohol, but whatever my tongue seems swollen and eating isn’t as fun. BTW another sweepstakes to win a CPAP found me.

Left work shortly after five. Sunday I had bought the Grizzlies BELIEVE MEMPHIS t-shirt. I love the light blue color and adidas dri-fit fabric. Also the bear head logo. Decided to go back and buy the two others I saw: GRIT GRIND and MEMPHIS BASKETBALL.

Got there and got those, then also found a third: WE DON’T BLUFF. Four shirts for nine bucks. With these four light blue t-shirts, my navy Grizzlies quarter zip, my grey Grizz Gaming t-shirt, and my light blue Grizzlies team socks, I can wear Grizzlies gear five days a week. Got a friend who works with the Grizzlies, who sometimes reads this blog. Told his dad but will surprise him with the news.    

Grilled BBQ chicken tenders, cole slaw, and green beans. I skipped the rice and potatoes. Watched The Neighborhood and God Friended Me. Then some Monday Night Football just to have it on when I was finished up my laptop stuff. Wasn’t feeling 100%.

RON FAIRLY [SABR Bio] was the first player after Stan Musial to play 1,000 games in the outfield and 1,000 games in the infield - 1,037 G = LF +CF + RF; 1,218 G @ 1b.  Since accomplished by Peter Rose and Robin Yount. Fairly’s only times as an All-Star were in his 16th and 20th seasons. AS in 1973 & 1977. He has the most career home runs while never hitting 20 in a season. Highest HR years was 19 in 1977, but he never had a year with 0 in 21 seasons. Had the last plate appearance, at-bat, hit and RBI in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Drove in Wally Moon in the 13th inning of the last game in the Coliseum 20-Sep-1961. Played for both major league teams in Canada. Played in MON 1969-74 and TOR in 1977. In each case it was the first season for each expansion team. Played for twelve seasons under manager Walt Alston, but never played in Brooklyn. Began his MLB career with LAD in 1958. Only player to hit his first and last major league home run on the same date, twenty years apart. First MLB HR = 12-Sep-1958 off Ron Kline; Final MLB HR = 12-Sep=1978 off Doc Medich.

 

Dawgs Bite Gators

For the record I was certain Florida was going to beat Georgia. Even at halftime I figured FL HC Dan Mullen would make adjustments to win the game. Mullen is a good coach (best in the SEC after Saban) – winning with a backup QB who hadn’t started in high school. I was on pins and needles the entire GA/FL game. Dawgs were converting third downs and the Gators weren’t. UGA had a couple of calls go their way early (later several calls went Florida’s way). I kept waiting for Florida to come back. They came close, but it was too little too late.  

As expected, UGA WR Lawrence Cager (#15) was the difference. The GA offense had slowed without Cager. The vaunted “DB U” couldn’t stop Cager and the other Dawg receivers. Cager had a big day but Fromm spread his passes around to WRs, TEs, and RBs. At least three passes were dropped, and in all three cases the receiver should’ve caught the pass. One would’ve been a touchdown (#5). Deandre Swift’s TD run was called back because a WR was holding (#5). Not sure if the Dawgs got field goals on those drives, so I’ll just say the score could’ve been 32-17. Great catch by RB Brian Herrien.

Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship had another perfect day, going 3-3 on field goals and 1-1 on extra points. Finalists for the Lou Groza Award are named this week, and Rodrigo should be on this list.

UGA QB Jake Fromm doesn’t get the respect he deserves. Sure LSU’s Joe Burrow may be a step ahead of Fromm (though Burrow has better receivers) and Tua is no slouch (though slightly injury prone), but Jake is never mentioned as a top QB despite all he’s achieved in his career. National championship game appearance. Two SEC championship game appearances. 3-0 against Florida. Ran off two five star QBs who couldn’t beat Fromm out. This year his 70% completion percentage is the highest of his career. Fromm continues to climb the Total QB Ranking list. As a freshman Fromm finished 6th in the nation and last year as a sophomore finished 3rd.

Pitt beat GT 20-10. Panthers scored on a long run and a long pass. GT’s only TD came on a long pass. GT was behind and needed two scores to win, but was letting 30-45 seconds tick off between plays. Even if you don’t have talented players you can play with urgency. Keep hearing several experts saying they’re not so sure about the new head coach. We’ll see if there’s improvement next year. Jackets wore another different uniform. They’ve only worn one outfit twice. Whatever. For the record on Saturday I wore my GT pullover and GT colored sneakers.

Not many other good games. Wake Forest may have a decent team. Deacs rolled over pitiful NC State with Mark and Marnie Mullen Crumpler in attendance. Neither can match up with Clemson, who had an easy time with Wofford. Clemson wore purple jerseys and pants for their annual military appreciation day.  

FSU fired head coach Willie Taggert. Many think Urban Meyer will take the USC job. FSU lost to Miami who lost to GT.  

 

Maryland wore nice throwbacks against Michigan. Didn’t help.

Chiefs wore grey facemasks Sunday against their Super Bowl 4 opponent, the Vikings. Minnesota looked terrible in their modern unis. Former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket / Westminster Wildcat kicker Harrison Butker booted two field goals both longer than 50 yards – in the last 3 minutes to tie and win the game. I love the grey facemasks, but the Chiefs are one of the few teams who look good with white masks, since their colors are just red and white. White masks are easy to spot, but note below how the grey masks are barely visible - so they don't take away from the rest of the helmet and uniform. Wish GT could understand that. 

The Eagles were “black in black” Sunday. There’s an overused phrase. The Falcons used it back in the 80’s. Now the Eagles can be cool and special. Like the Raiders. And Falcons. And Cardinals. And Steelers. And Lions. And Ravens. And Jaguars. And Ohio State. And Oregon. Texas Tech. South Carolina. North Carolina. Miami. And half the other college teams.

 

The Giants also wore throwbacks against Dallas.

Learned that Georgia State had not renewed the contract of head baseball coach Greg Frady, who’d spoken to our Hot Stove group two times. Not sure about his record. He probably was paid a relatively high salary, so maybe GSU wanted to go with someone cheaper. Haven’t seen where construction has started on the GSU baseball stadium down where Atlanta Stadium used to be. Or the basketball arena. 

 

At the end of May the Georgia State University announced that they are not renewing the contract of baseball head coach Greg Frady. Through 13 years with the Panthers he compiled a record of 370-365-1. However in 2018/2019 they went 15-41. The 56-year-old Frady is well known in European Baseball coaching the German Baseball National Team from 2004 to 2014. With Germany he played in the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Baseball World Cups and won a bronze medal during the 2010 European Championship.

 

Frady was replaced by the head coach at Gwinnett College, where my niece’s husband is in charge of the sports facilities.

Braves Play Day

Play Day at SunTrust Park. 

Met up with Katie, who had an autographed Scott Patterson photo for me. I stuck around to watch her hit in the Braves batting cages.

She made contact with most of the pitches in the strike zone.

Also saw Norman and his friend. the teacher from Gainesville and her beau, the older couple from McDonough, and Nabil the ticket rep. Joel was there but I missed seeing him. 

Many items for sale but no bargains - except there Stance 2019 St. Patricks Day over the calf socks for five bucks. Perfect to wear with my green Braves jersey and green Gwinnett cap.

The AJC’s Mark Bradley only says the obvious: dominant starting pitching is needed to win in the playoffs. Then Bradley surveyed the current situation: Cole is too expensive. The Braves would be outbid for him. Zach Wheeler is only a #3 starter, gets hurt a lot, and isn’t that good anyway. Bumgarner has been hurt and is 30 and will be expensive. Signing him could create an albatross of a contract. Keuchel didn’t knock the Braves socks off last year, and will be more expensive going forward. Soroka should be the Braves ace of the future. I say the Braves give him a big contract this year or next. Hopefully good Folty will show up more often than bad Folty. Teheran comes cheap but can’t be trusted in the postseason. Fried won 17 games and should continue to improve. The Braves need Newcomb to start. The Braves have four top prospects: Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, and Kyle Muller. Doubtful any will be ready next April (I bet the Braves will try to fit at least one into the 2020 rotation).

 

I agree with Bradley: dominant starting pitching is key in the postseason. The Nats and Astros had the highest-paid 1-2-3 starters in baseball. But there are only so many Gerrit Coles, Max Scherzers, Stephen Strasburgs, Justin Verlanders, etc. Yet the Astros had one of the best pitchers in baseball starting game seven (Zach Greinke) yet they still lost.  

 

The Braves had Maddux Glavine and Smoltz develop into hall of famers before their eyes, but several other can’t miss prospects failed to pan out: Steve Avery, Zane Smith, Pete Smith, Mike Hampton, Denny Neagle, etc. Charlie Morton struggled for years before developing into an All-Star. Everyone complained when the Braves kept stocking up on young pitchers in 2015 2016 2017. No guarantee any will develop into all-stars, much less hall of famers.

 

Decisions have to be made. Chances have to be taken. Give a high dollar contract to one guy and he doesn’t work out, and there’s no money to sign someone else (unless you’re the Yankees). The Dodgers appear to have struck gold in a couple of their young starting pitchers, but a certain amount of that was luck.

 

Last year Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos actively pursued quality players throughout the offseason and season. Atlanta doesn’t have the budget of teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers, and doesn’t need to hand out hundreds of millions to over the hill pitchers. AA restocked the bullpen, and I have no doubt he will make every effort to start the 2020 season with the best pitching possible.

Thinking about getting a new battery for my old Seiko Braves Radio watch, which is still nice. But I love my Apple Watch, which tracks steps, workouts, my heartbeat, and notifies me of various news and sports stories.

 

RUSTY STAUB [SABR Bio] hit at least one home run every year from 1963-85. Never played a season without hitting a home run. He was the first full-time designated hitter to record 100 RBI in a season. All 695 plate appearances in 1977 for DET were as a DH and he knocked in 101. He was an early advocate of wearing batting gloves. Some believe that success he had at bat is the reason batting gloves ae in such wide use today. 

As the Kicker Kicks

 

Falcons: poor old Matt Bryant just couldn’t get his mojo back. After being released after last season he figured he was retired, and didn’t pursue opportunities with other teams (I guess). Out of practice when the Falcons needed him this fall, he wasn’t the same and got released again. Sad soap opera – Days of our Kickers? 

Looking forward to watching Bryant’s replacement Younghoe Koo, who’d been a Lou Groza Award finalist at Georgia Southern. Koo also kicked for the now defunct Atlanta Legends and San Diego Chargers. Earlier this month Koo was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad. Koo went to high school in New Jersey where he was team MVP with six interceptions, and is the fourth Korean-born player in NFL history. Hines Ward was also born in Korea.    

Fun to build a whole plate of Mexican food from the plate up. Start with lettuce or chips and go from there. I use enough tortilla shells to make my quesadillas. Willys catered last Friday’s sales meeting. Lettuce. Black beans. Meat. Queso. Pico. Cheese. I skipped the chips and soft taco shells.  

 

Same old Atlanta United. Fire the coach.

 

Wednesday: left work at 530. Traffic backed up on Spaulding so I checked my GPS. Gridlock in Peachtree Corners headed toward East Roswell. Ceil wanted me to pick up pizza. I told her I wouldn’t get to the pizza place for an hour, that she should get it herself. Traffic so bad I had to backtrack east on Holcomb Bridge, south on Ptree Industrial, west on Winters Chapel then thru Dunwoody to Spaulding over to Roberts. Slow there across 400 over to Roswell Road. Across the river up the hill to the Roswell Square. Passed the pizza place but continued home. Got home and both C and A were gone – they had decided to eat at the pizza place. Would’ve been nice to know.  

 

Thursday’s drive home wasn’t as bad. Hope to leave at 430 pm. When I run for President my platform will be to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October.

 

Supper was a slice of pizza (okay two), Anna’s choco-chip pumpkin bread, and potato salad. Chicago Med. New Amsterdam. Speechless. That church choir show: “Perfect Harmony.” Then some World Series, but went to bed after the Nats went ahead.

 

104 days til pitchers & catchers report. Nats are World Champs. Phillies getting a new better manager. Mets will be improved. But don’t believe the “experts” – the 2020 NL East Division champs will be the Atlanta Braves.

For the 2020 season the Macon Bacon are installing Big Ass Ceiling Fans at Luther Williams Field. That's the name of the company that makes the fans. We have some in our plant in Norcross.

Wasn't sure I wanted to sell them,

so I put the on eBay at a higher then normal price.

They sold.

 Won the 49ers helmet when, back in the early 90's?

Sold it for $50.00.

Trick or Treat

Halloween oddity: kids passing the house and not stopping. Not sure why. Might’ve been happening at our house. We had the lights on, and after we had the door open giving out candy I’d stand there with the door open looking out at the street to see if anyone else would be coming soon. At our house if you don’t cut straight through the grass (and leaves) from the door to the street, you have to come down the driveway, then turn right on the walk to the front door. There are trees so you can’t cut straight from the end of the driveway to the front door. I’d see people passing by. Some parents were dressed in costumes, but I’m not sure all the kids came to our door. We had Barney on a leash. He didn’t bark, but was interested in the visitors. Several kids petted him.

 

We did have a decent amount of trick or treaters. Our neighborhood had a party for the kids from 5-630, then the trick or treating began. I left work before 430 and made decent time home. After removing all the leaves Sunday afternoon, the yard looked like I hadn’t done anything. The driveway was wet but I blew off the leaves. Had my blower on high. As I was finishing the wind kicked up, blowing leaves back on the driveway. I hate to use the blower on the yard. I need the exercise, so to get leaves off the yard I rake or use the lawnmower. I need the mulch in the yard. My new mower is more powerful, and does a good job with the leaves. I only use the blower on the driveway and deck. The leaves and pinestraw I blow off the driveway gets blown into the natural area where the trees are in front of the house, or into the backyard natural areas and ditch. Sure on windy days some of those leaves might get blown away, but no more than had the leaves not been blown at all. I’d rather deal with an extension cord and electric blower than fool with a complicated gas powered blower.  

 

As we were almost ready to sit down to eat the doorbell rang. C and Barney went and opened the door, revealing four costumed 12-13 year-olds. They hollered “trick or treat!” I grabbed the bowl off the table and showed it to them, saying “Salad for everyone!” They enjoyed the joke.

 

Another Halloween observation: after receiving their candy, two or three kids asked for additional candy “for their sick brother” or “my friend in a wheelchair” holding out a second bag they were carrying.  Possibly a scam, but for the most part they pulled it off smoothly. In the end I gave out a lot of candy, but still had 50 or so pieces left over. Ran out of Baby Ruths but had Buttingfingers to spare.

 

Anna says my candy game has gone down. She remembered how I used to stock up on 25 cent “full size” Snickers bars to give out, which were a big hit. Nowadays those same bars cost a dollar, so I’ve switched to the 8 for a dollar fun size, and hand out several.

 

Ceil cooked spaghetti and meatballs. Tossed a salad. Very good. Not sure if it was the sauce, but my tongue was swelling up, making the food hard to enjoy. Tongue remained swollen throughout the night, and on into today. Slightly effecting my speech. Told the story in my morning meeting, which I’m sure my coworkers appreciated. Not good.

 

Watched the Halloween episode of Schooled, then Mixed-ish, Speechless, and Fresh off the Boat. Saw where the new season of Tom Clancy’s “Jack Ryan” has debuted on Amazon Prime TV. Ceil had dozed off but I got her to watch the introduction before we went to bed. She had liked The Hunt for Red October, but like Clear and Present Danger and the other Jack Ryan movies, this Amazon series is probably too violent for her. I’ll have to watch it while she’s out of town.

M went off to be with friends. Anna came in late after work and a friend’s birthday celebration. W&MC were excited to greet trick or treaters at their new house for the first time. They made a ghost costume for Okie.

Was sleeping soundly this morning, wearing my CPAP mask (speaking of CPAPs, I entered a contest for a mini CPAP machine). Deep in a dream first out hanging out at a tailgate for a college football game, on a hilly journey across campus. Then into a gym where a few basketball players were about to play horse. Might’ve been Dallas Mavericks based on the uniform colors. Might’ve been foreign players, because one of them was teaching me an odd, cool greeting: “A’hah!” Didn’t wake up until Ceil was getting out of bed at 6:24. Traffic was light and I made it to work before 7:40.

 

Lunch meeting today catered by Jason’s Deli. I’m getting my usual bbq beef sandwich and potato salad. There’s been a real good leftover potato salad in the work fridge that I’ve been snacking on this week, so I’ll see if it matches today’s Jason’s Deli potato salad (it didn’t, but still good).
