Halls of Shame

I want to compare Murphy’s stats to Gil Hodges and Tony Oliva (also Harold Baines), to see if Murphy should be in the HOF. Statistically Murphy was one of the top players of his decade. I don’t think Hodges, Oliva, or Baines ever won two MVP awards. Neither did Minnie Minoso.

You don’t get in the hall of fame for being a nice guy. But evidentally they keep you out of the HOF for being a bad guy – Pete Rose and Joe Jackson, or Terrell Owens in football. Or if your politics are wrong, like Curt Schilling. Compare Curt’s career to Jim Kaat.

In the NFL a big factor in deciding who gets in the “Pro Football Hall of Fame” is how many All-Pro Awards you get, and how many Pro Bowls you go to. Compares you to your peers. But guys from winning teams get those votes more than guys on losing teams. If you are on a losing team you have to be really good. Tommy Nobis never made it because Dick Butkus and Ray Nitsckie were winning all the awards back then.

Herschel Walker retired with the second most yards in NFL history – and the most yards in pro history, but he’s not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because a third of the yards were return yards (but the remaining 2/3 yards are still HOF worthy), and he didn’t have enough Pro Bowls or All Pros and he played six positions instead of just one and he messed up the NFL by turning pro early and he signed with the rival league. In baseball Curt Flood was a pariah for questioning the reserve clause, opening the door to free agency. Same with Herschel.

Murderers like Ray Lewis get in the PFHOF and star in NFL commercials, but Hershel is a solid businessman who dealt with his personal problems out of the public eye – then wrote a book about it to help others with the same condition (yet he still gets blasted for his problems by the idiots on the internet).  Now that Herschel is a big Republican he will never get in the PFHOF. Walker is not on the Nissan Heisman House commercials this fall either.

This is similar to Denison’s devotional today, how the US is not sending a delegation to the Olympics in China because of the bad things China does to it’s citizens – while the US persecutes Christians here at home, and not upholding US / Mexico border immigration laws while demanding Russia respect the Ukraine’s border. That Jim Denison sure is a rascal, isn’t he?

Denison: A Simpsons episode was censored in China: season 16, episode 12 titled “Goo Goo Gai Pan” features the family going to China. At one point the Simpsons gather around the embalmed Mao Zedong. Homer walks up to the casket and says, “Look at him sleeping. He’s like a little angel who killed 50 million people!” The White House announced (in response?) the US will not send an official delegation to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. This action is in response to China's "ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang," Yet are similar things not happening here?

Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra announced his agency would force faith-based adoption agencies to violate their beliefs regarding human sexuality or risk not receiving federal funds. Boston has approved 284 requests for outside groups to use City Hall flagpoles to promote agendas such as gay pride, but it rejected a group that wanted to display a Christian flag. The ACLU agrees the city violated the group's free speech rights.

Man I love my Hulu TV. Also the other apps like Amazon Prime and YouTube. Saturday we left home shortly after 9 and returned at like 2 pm. Turned on the TV and kept watching the show from 9 am. I’ve been looking up old Carsons and Lettermans and Lenos. An old Carson clip came on with a “young” Don Rickles coming out. Leo Durocher was there as well. I told M that Rickles had voiced the Mr. Potato Head character in Toy Story.

Met Anna last night at Grindhouse on Piedmont but it was closed. Ate at Jalisco instead, in Peachtree Battle. My other friend Reid had bought a Christmas tree stand at the Ace Hardware in Peachtree Battle.

Tonight for me is the Hot Stove meeting up north of Cumming. The Braves just sold off the three minor league teams they owned: Gwinnet, Rome, and Mississippi. Look for Rome and Mississippi to change their names from Braves to something crazy. They didn’t say anything about selling off their team in Augusta.

FRANK CHANCE  [SABR Bio] experienced hearing loss due to the number of times he was hit in the head by pitches: 137 HBP. Not sure how many were cranial. He was the first native of The Golden State elected to the Hall of Fame. He had been studying dentistry at Cal but didn’t complete those studies. While playing semi-pro baseball, he was discovered by Cubs outfielder Bill Lange - who convinced the Cubs to sign Chance sight-unseen. Without a hint of irony, his peers called him “The Peerless Leader”.

 

Young Dr. Patel

Trying to make my life into a comedy routine. As always, don't believe everything you read. The truth is stretched for the sake of the comedy (disclaimer for the humorless).

These days just about every doctor I go to is younger than me. Like I go see so many doctors. My general practitioner had recommended two different specialists in the same group, for two different maladies. I called to make the appointment and didn’t notice the recommended names, so I asked for whichever doctors were available soonest. They gave me Dr. Patel, which sounded like a good doctor name. Then I went and finally Dr. Patel came in. She was a beautiful young lady, very professional. She explained the procedure and answered all my questions and seemed thorough. When I was making my next appointment I saw a card with her photo and qualifications. She went to Duke and Rutgers and had many high honors, and specialized in my need – but her photo looked like a glamour shot. I told Ceil that the doctor was young but had gone to Duke. I was wondering if Dr. Patel would go out in the waiting room to tell Ceil the procedure was a success, and Ceil would see how young and beautiful she was. Heck during the procedure I was under anestesia, and had no memory of seeing or talking to young Dr Patel. The other doctor was a young man, also very conversive in my need. He said he doubted there would be much of a change in the condition, but gave me his cell number, telling me to text or call if I had any problems or questions. I guess I could text him and ask if he wanted to go to the Braves game with me. Then I could tell him I also had a ticket for Dr. Patel if she wanted to go.

No joke: my company is pushing to get more employees vaccinated. Every vaccinated employee gets a $250 bonus and is entered in 15 weekly drawings for $5000.00. If our south region reaches at least a 75% vaccination rate (a big if) there will be a grand prize drawing for between $25000 (75%) and $100,000 (95%). If 95% of the South gets vaccinated, every employee gets a $1250 bonus (another longshot). Will be interesting to see if this persuades any of my unvaccinated team members to get the shot.

Gil Hodges was finally elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Also Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, Tony Oliva, and Buck Leonard. Perhaps there is hope for two-time MVP Dale Murphy – hopefully while he is still living.

The Heisman finalists were announced: Pitt QB Kenny Pickett, Bama QB Bryce Young, Ohio State QB CJ Stroud, and Michigan DL Aiden Hutchinson. The Midwest vote could be split between Stroud and Hutchinson. Young will get the southern vote, bolstered by his performance Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. Since Stroud and Young are freshmen and Hutchinson a defender, could senior Pickett sneak in as the winner?

According to Stuart Condra, the Bama lineman had a better year than Hutchinson.

GEORGE SISLER  [SABR Bio] is the only Hall of Famer to have two sons play in the major leagues. Sons Dick & Dave Sisler enjoyed major league careers of 8 & 7 years respectively. The only year George received any MVP votes, he won - AL MVP in 1922. Although many said he was good enough to win them, he never won a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger. Sisler’s career ended in 1930. GG began in 1957 & SS began in 1980.

McDonalds starts a new two week promotion, offering a different free item every day with a one dollar purchase - which for me is a McChicken sandwich. For the beanie and Mariah Carey t-shirt you have to order through the mobile app. Not sure many Mariah Carey fans are such early risers.

Squirrel Hunting

I’ll always remember the time I went squirrel hunting. Was out there all morning and didn’t see a single squirrel. Odd because I went to a place where I usually see a lot of squirrels. Finally decided to leave. On the way back to my truck (I don’t really have a truck, but when you’re telling a hunting story it sounds wimpy to say Corolla). I almost stumbled over this guy coming out of the bushes. He looked like a bush. He was carrying all these squirrels he had killed. I asked him where he got all the squirrels. He said “Well you probably noticed that I’m not the best looking guy.” Yes, I replied, “I’m sorry to say it but you’re just about the ugliest guy I’ve ever met.” Well, he continued, that helps me get the squirrels. All I have to do is look at a squirrel and it falls down dead. Just then a squirrel that we hadn’t even seen fell out of the tree onto the ground right next to us. That’s amazing I said. Say, what’s a guy like you do for companionship? Oh, I’m married, he said. I shuddered to think of what the woman looked like. He could tell what I was thinking and said that she was ugly as well. I asked why don’t you bring her out here squirrel hunting with you? I would, he said – but she tears them up too bad.

SEC: I hate all the snipping on social media, all the alleged experts who aren’t coaches or players who aren’t at the practices, but know better than the coaches. My unprofessional opinion: not sure when the Heisman votes were due, but that was a Heisman worthy performance by the Bama QB. Perhaps Kirby is holding JT out until the rematch, though doubtful UGA could beat Bama even with JT Daniels as the QB. I think GA should beat Michigan. Stetson would be more of a threat against that particular defense than Daniels.

Everyone wants to change the QB, but it wasn’t Stetson who gave up 34 points to the Bama offense. Bennett was able to move the ball downfield all night. No one wants to win more than Kirby. No fan is as dedicated as him. By the time JT could’ve gone in, Kirby was probably thinking heck, let’s just wait to the championship game.

And remember that great catch by Pickens with the Bama defender draped all over him? Why in the world was that not pass interference? Instead of 2nd & 7 it should've been 1st & 10 - 15 yards down the field.

ACC: great run by Pitt QB Kenny Pickett for the TD. Dude should be a Heisman finalist. He’s a senior. Bama QB Young is a freshman. Both are ranked high in the ESPN Total QB Ratings.

Saturday morning we drove downtown to visit Shivonne. I drove the Chickfila to pick up lunch for MC and Ceil (and me). Will and brother-in-law Thomas had biked the mile to the Congress Center for the SEC Fanfest. They got on TV when Todd Gurley was interviewed. 

Watched Bama/UGA over at my other friend Reid’s house. Three couples plus one other lady. Usually the ladies chat in the kitchen or in the back, but this time they chatted there by the TV. I love them dearly but bless their hearts it was hard to hear the broadcast. Then they’d ask a question, and they’d marvel at how I knew the answer – because I was paying attention to the game!

Sunday School. Later I drove C to Perimeter Mall. Laundry.      Watched some of the Falcons. Went to get a haircut.

OZZIE ALBIES  [B-R Bio] is the only second baseman in the 150-year history of the Braves franchise to collect 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in the same season. R.I.P. Claude Humphrey

Former Falcon Claude Humphrey passed away yesterday at the age of 77.

Humphrey was the third overall pick out of Tennessee State.  

He hold the Falcons all-time sack record, and added to his total with the Eagles.

Claude was the first Falcon inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Saturday morning Will and Thomas biked down to the World Congress Center to attend the SEC Fanfest. They found themselves on ESPN College Gameday, behind David Pollack's interview with Todd Gurley.

As a kid I watched Billy Kilmer quarterback the Saints and Redskins. Kilmer played basketball at UCLA for legendary head coach John Wooden. He finished in the top five in passing and rushing for the Bruins.

Kilmer played halfback for the 49ers, in the same backfield with YA Tittle and John Brodie. It was Kilmer's fumble that Jim Marshall famously returned the wrong way. Kilmer missed time with the 49ers after falling asleep at the wheel and driving her car into the San Francisco Bay. Later Kilmer's time with the Saints came to an end when he was traded to Washington, so New Orleans could draft Archie Manning.  

I might be inventing in a little Atlanta Legends gear. 

David Letterman will be a guest on with Peyton and Eli tomorrow night.

Perhaps they'll throw footballs at meatballs atop the Christmas tree.

Some teams are itching to break out an old helmet, like the Patriots, Bucs, and Falcons. Some have never worn anything different, but might change up for the sake of change.

Greatest College Player

The question was asked who was the greatest college player. Many said Herschel. Others were suggested, but few listed why. My reply was a hit: Three time All-America. Finished in the top 3 for the Heisman three times. Broke the freshman, sophomore, & junior rushing records. Won one natty and played for another. Frist college player to go pro early. No other college player has a resume comparable to Herschel. Tim Tebow may come close, and Archie Griffin. Barry Sanders had one good year.

Jim Brown was great, but only made All-America his senior year…perhaps because he was black. Only finished 5th in the Heisman voting. Only played 8 game seasons – why I ranked the players by yards per game.

Tony Dorsett comes close to rivaling Walker for the best ever crown. Comparable numbers, allocades, and national championships. Tony won the Heisman, but that was his only top three finish.

While Herschel was the first college player to turn pro before his original class graduated, he was not the first player to turn pro with college eligibility remaining. For instance, back during World War II teenagers enlisted in the military after high school. Bud Grant and Norm Van Brocklin did this, then enrolled in college to play football. Both turned pro after three years. There may have been others. After being named all-conference multiple times in both football and basketball, Grant signed with the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA. Two years later he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the rest was history.

DUSTY RHODES  [SABR Bio] as a rookie, in his 21st major league game, scored the game-winning run from second base on a ball fielded by the pitcher.  In the bottom of the 15th inning on 05-Aug-1952, Rhodes scored when teammate Don Mueller bounced a high chopper off the plate. It was fielded by Dodger pitcher Chris Van Cuyk, but not in time. During a tour of Japan, he worked on slowing down his swing the better to handle change-up pitches while the Giants toured the Far-East after the 1953 season. Rhodes admitted his weakness, saying, “If I went to the North Pole, even the Eskimos would know enough to throw me change-ups.” The World Series MVP was first awarded in 1955. Rhodes’s performance in the 1954 Fall Classic was the main force behind the Giants’ unexpected sweep of the Indians.

Floyd Little < Herschel

Floyd Little of the Denver Broncos was a great running back, but he slipped into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by the slimmest of margins. Come to think, his 9 year career stats aren’t quite as good as the last 9 seasons of Herschel’s NFL career – Walker’s descent into oblivion, when he was traded from the Cowboys, underutilized in Minnesota, and played out the string for the Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys.

In Herschel’s last nine years he had 33% more receptions, more receiving and combined yards, and more touchdowns than Little – on 300 fewer touches. This includes when Walker played for the Vikings, Giants, and Eagles, and his last few years with the Cowboys. In his career Little missed 9 games, and average of one per year. In his last nine years Herschel only missed three of the 146 games his teams played.

In Herschel’s first three NFL seasons he gained 5199 yards to Little’s 8741 career all-purpose yards – in half as many touches. Herschel’s first three years better Little’s best three seasons, and certainly Little’s first three seasons. And remember, Little’s stats include his first three seasons spent in an inferior league.

Little was one of a line of great backs to wear number 44 at Syracuse: Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Little. Larry Csonka wore 39 for the Orangemen.

Worked until almost 6 pm last night trying to get everything done, since I’m off tomorrow and leaving early today. C brought leftover pizza home from school so me and M ate that instead of the lentils that C cooked. Watched episode 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Good stuff. Yesterday they started filming season two.

Just my luck. I buy the annual golf pass, and won’t be able to play the entire month of December.

Last year Anna gave me a nice jean jacket for Christmas. It didn’t fit and they were sold out of my size, so I exchanged it for other clothes. Yesterday I nabbed a decent jean jacket at a thrift store for seven bucks, nice and broken in, not stiff but soft. The clerk was impressed with my score. Still I’m not really a jean jacket guy. Seems like the only old guys I see wearing jean jackets are millionaire politicians in campaign commercials, trying to appeal to the common man.

Finishing up the new Stephen King novel Billy Summers. The main character becomes a writer for the first time, telling his sad life story as he writes it out in book form – a book within a book. After making the hit he makes his getaway. While hiding out he rescues a college girl who’d been abused and dumped on the street. TOMMY HENRICH  [SABR Bio] reached base on catcher Mickey Owen’s dropped third strike. When Henrich stuck out with two out in the top of the 9th inning in the 4th game of the 1941 WS, it appeared the hometown Dodgers had won the game to tie the Series at two games apiece. However, Owen dropped the strike and Henrich made it safely to first. The Yankees went on to win the game and the Series. Henrich once had four grand slams in one season. He didn’t hit one grand slam in any other season of his career. Henrich hit grand slams on 23-Jun; 08-Jul; 30-Jul; & 17-Aug-1948. At the time of his death in 2009, he was Lou Gehrig’s final surviving teammate. Henrich passed away 01-Dec-2009 back in his home state of Ohio.

Handicapping the Heisman

People are starting to realize there is no runaway frontrunner in the Heisman race. Many are considering defensive players like UGA’s Jordan Davis (who is up for just about every other award).

GT RB Jahmyr Gibbs is transferring. Except for playing for a winning team and going to bowl games, I’m not sure what benefit he will gain from going to another program. Gibbs’ talent is unquestioned. Every year there are a ton of college backs who matriculate to NFL teams, so he’ll have plenty of competition whenever he enters the draft. As expected Tech fired three assistant coaches, including the offensive coordinator.

BILL BRUTON  [SABR Bio] his extra-inning home run gave the home team a victory in Milwaukee for the first time in more than a half century. Bruton homered in the 10th inning of his second major league game on 14-Apr-1953 to give Warren Spahn his 123rd career win. The previous MLB home-team win in Cream City was 12-Sep-1901(1). He led the majors in stolen bases in each of his first three seasons. Bruton swiped 26, 34 & 25 bases in 1953, 54 & 55. He is a member of a very special “club”, occupied by only Elmer Valo, Duane Kuiper and himself, who hit bases-clearing triples twice in a game. Valo = 01-May-1951(1) 3rd & 7th; Bruton = 02-Aug-1959(2) 1st & 6th; and Kuiper = 27-Jul-1978(2) 1st & 5th.
