Will's Birthday

Tuesday night W&MC had A&C, M, and Thomas & Holly over to cook out. Shivonne got to meet little Goose for the first time.

Wednesday: left work at 3:30. Got home and drove C down to W&MC's. They had taken the kids to the zoo, and shopped for bikes, so the kids were tired. W mixed margaritas, using a spicy jalapeno infused tequila. Mexican. C brought a birthday cake for Will. Shivonne helped blow out the candles.

Little Millie was transfixed by my Braves cap. When I moved it back and forth, her eyes would follow the cap. We watched the Braves game.

Soroka was all over the place. Hit at least 2 batters. Was driving me crazy as well. With all the Cleveland baserunners, they were lucky none scored until the end. Really made the game drag. But hopefully Soroka can get it going. After his first start a week or two ago he decides to just rare back and throw, instead of trying to nibble at the corners.

Braves are 25-4 in their last 29 games. Going into Tuesday's game the Braves had hit 67 homers in their last 27 games, outscoring the opposition by 84 runs, averaging 7 runs per game with a .304 batting average.

Looks like all those "fans" blasting Liberty media's treatment of the Braves will finally get their wish. The Braves corporate owners plan to spin off the team into its own publicly held company – so you can buy stock in the team. This article does say that once this happens, Liberty may sell the team to a new owner. Perhaps a foreign owner?

Today: up early this AM to play golf. My legs were still sore from the race, but it was good to get them stretched out. I didn't play well. Grass in some fairways almost as high as the rough. I did par two straight holes: 2 and 3. After 9 holes I was pretty tired. Then Dunkin Donuts before visiting my supplier, across 75/85 from old Turner Field. Stopped by to visit the Hank Aaron 715 memorial on the way.

The supplier has a complex of several old warehouses. They process metal in a warehouse built in 1911 (below). Parts of the floor are cobblestone and brick.

Next door are two old warehouses built shortly after Sherman burned Atlanta (below left). Old bars on windows and such. Several studios film movies and commercials there: Ant Man, Central Intelligence, Fast and Furious, The Wasp, etc. John Cena recently finished filming there.

Leftover meeting food for lunch: Willys Mexican or Jason's Deli. C had book club tonight. She made pizza before she went.

DENISON: Jacob Wolf, a government professor at Regent University who formerly taught at Princeton, writes in Public Discourse that democracy "has become a secular religion, complete with its own dogmas, practices, and clerics. Humanitarianism replaces charity, and mind (or reason) replaces God himself." This secular religion, if unchecked, will be our undoing as a nation. It will continue to replace truth with tolerance, leading millions into unbiblical immorality that is destructive to themselves and those they influence. It will lead us away from God (John 10:10) and eternal life (John 3:16) into a Christless darkness in this world and the next. It will provoke God's righteous judgment on our rejection of his word. "The nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; those nations shall be utterly laid waste" (Isaiah 60:12).

GEORGE SISLER [SABR Bio] broke Ty Cobb's record for most hits in a single season. Cobb's record was 248 in 1911, his MVP year. Sisler had 257 in 1920. In 2004, Ichiro Suzuki broke the record with 262 hits. Sisler won the AL MVP playing for the St. Louis Browns in 1922. The franchise moved east in 1954 and the team renamed the Orioles. In 1964, Robinson was voted AL MVP. Since then, Orioles Frank Robinson (1966), Boog Powell (1970), and Cal Ripken (1983, 1991) have won MVP. Sisler hit safely in the first 34 games of the 1925 season, from 14-Apr through 19-May before being held hitless the following day by the A's Lefty Grove.

When Perfect Isn't Good Enough

Domingo German of the Yankees pitches the 24th perfect game in thousands and thousands of MLB games, and is only named co-AL player of week. Seems like they could've gone one week without honoring Ohtoni. Acuna was NL Player of the Week.

The Braves have 8 all stars: 3 starters, 2 pitchers, and 3 more subs. The entire infield made it. A testament to infield coach Ron Washington. Also former Braves Freeman Dansby Jansen and Kevin Gausman.

Hard to keep up with reading the closed captions. Koreans talk fast.

Friday: boss took me and Brad to lunch at Longhorn. My burger was good but messy. Had to use a knife and fork. Also a baked potato. After work I took C to Superica in Avalon to split chicken quesadillas.

Up early to play golf on Saturday morning. Back home to cook me an eggy boy sandwich for breakfast.

Drove down to meet A&C's new puppy. Then to Orvis near Peachtree & Piedmont for C. While I was sitting in the car waiting on C a truck driving past had a tire explode. Huge noise, like a bomb. Did you hear it? My ears weren't the same for the rest of the day.

Then across to the disco Kroger so C could go to the art store. Most of the parking lot was blocked off for construction. I was waiting again in the car with the windows rolled down. Hot but bearable. What I wasn't realizing was the heat was wearing me out. I was bushed the rest of the day.

Home to make "huevos rancheros" - an egg and ground beef quesadilla (below). We had eggs we needed to eat up. Did laundry and watched Smokey and the Bandit.

No Sunday School so we went to the 10 am service. It was packed. Lots of young families with their kids. Ate lunch at a salad place. There was so much salad stuff that I didn't add chicken, and I got a small.

At home I went upstairs to change clothes. Put away some clean clothes, then realized I still needed to look for some summer clothes I'd misplaced. Went into M's room to get to the attic. Spent ten minutes cleaning M's room. Found my clothes and went through that container, and put some things back into the attic. That all took longer than expected.

Started some laundry and mowed the lawn. Got more done than I expected. Watched Rickie Fowler win the tournament.

Went to the Brasfield's to watch the Indian Hills Country Club fireworks. They had Mexican for everyone. Lots of desserts (above). Shawn's house is the second closest to the clubhouse, right where they set off the rockets (and every day his fenced in yard gets littered with golf balls). We were closer than the people sitting in the fairway. Had to look straight up to see them. Glad I brought earplugs.

DENISON: according to a new cable news survey, only 43% of Americans think our best days as a nation are ahead of us. This is a 9-point drop from two years ago and a 19-point decrease since 2017. In similar news, Gallup reports that only 31% of us have confidence in the US government, a decline of 25 points since 2006.

JEFF BURROUGHS [SABR Bio] was drafted first overall in the 1969 MLB June Amateur Draft by Washington (1970-71); then played for Texas (1972-76); Atlanta (1977-80); Seattle (1981): Oakland (1982-84), and Toronto (1985). He was with the Blue Jays when they played the Royals in the 1985 ALCS. Four players won AL MVP playing for Martin teams: Harmon Killebrew (1969 MIN); Burroughs (1974 TEX); Thurman Munson (1976 NYY); and Don Mattingly (1985 NYY). Jeff's son was the first former player from a Little League Baseball World Series championship team to receive an Olympic Medal. Sean Burroughs had a 7-year career with 4 teams in MLB.

2023 Peachtree Road Race Recap

Met Will down near Piedmont Park shortly before 7 am. Drove up to N Druid Hills and over toward Brookhaven. Parked on Kingsbury and only had to walk 6/10 of a mile to our start group. Will and his friend Zachary started in group N at 7:50. The problem with starting in group T is that all the slowpokes from group Y are always trying to sneak into our group.

Observation: Peachtree runners fall into two groups - (1) those who arrive early, before the 7 am race start. They're able to hear the Star Spangled Banner and jet flyover - and then wait until their time group moseys to the start line. Or (2), the late arrivers, who show up when they can. This morning as my T group walked and stood past Phipps Plaza, a steady stream of runners from various groups passed us as they worked their way to the start line. After years and years as a proud member of the first set, Will and I are becoming more and more members of the second.

We got a little rain while we were waiting to start, but I was able to stand under a tree. By the time my group T arrived at the start line, I was at the front of the group (above left). Took off at 7:08:02. Early on I was running behind a girl wearing an outlandish pink outfit. Didn't realize she started right next to me.

Ran a faster pace than I had when training, running hard for 2 minutes then walking for 30 seconds. The past several years I spent most of the race on the right side of the road, with the slower runners and walkers. This year I spent most of the race on the left. Even then runners constantly are having to weave around the novice walkers paying no heed to the walkers to the right "rule". Sure all the speed demons up in groups A and B can run fast times up ahead of the front of the pack, but the real Peachtree Road Race is in the back, where runners trying to get a good time have to weave left and right for ten kilometers.

And that I did. Ran my fastest mile in years in mile one - under ten minutes (9:54). Mile two wasn't far off the mile one pace (10:13). A nice 60-ish second breather talking to the Whitakers at SPdL, then a great third mile (11:22).  My fastest three miles in years and years. Crossed the halfway point in 33:41. Amazing.

Even on the long uphill past Piedmont Hospital, I tried to continue to alternate short bursts of running with walking. Tried to smile and make eye contact with as many Shepherd Spinal patients as possible, and continued my annual custom of securing a pair of Shepherd Spinal sweatbands.

At the top of Cardiac Hill, I resumed my run 2 minutes / walk 30 seconds routine. At the 4 mile mark I stopped at Bellwood Coffee to greet Ceil, MC, Shivonne, Millie, and Willis Norman (below - top). Another 60 second break. Another great split (13:40), considering the long hill and Bellwood break. Will had stopped at Bellwood earlier.

Then back past Pershing Point and the I-85 overpass. Stopped before White Columns to visit with a former retiree who manages a water stop. He had several questions about the office, giving me a 2 minute breather.

The rest of the "race" was pretty much six lanes of wall to wall walkers. I'd pick an opening to run through. Most of the time the lane would remain open for me to run through, but 2 or 3 times the walkers ahead of me would drift together, closing off my path. I had to slam on the brakes and dart left or right.

At each water stop I would grab a cup, take a sip, then pour the rest over my head. By mile two my shorts weren't yet completely wet - only the middle where the water had run down. Not the greatest look. But by the time I made the turn onto 10th Street I was drenched. I'd thought about wearing my old white dri-fit 2006 Peachtree tee, but knew it wouldn't look good wet. Instead I opted for my navy Nike Braves tee. Wore my purple On Cloud Monster running shoes, knowing they would best wick away the moisture. My footy socks did get wet, but for the most part my feet were fine - though usually I wear crew socks. I did wear a small blister on my left heel.

At the 6 mile mark my Apple Watch registered 6.2 miles at a respectable 1:14:27. I finished the remaining 2/10ths of a mile "strong".

As I neared the finish line I maneuvered right, in order to signal the race announcer that this was my 36th Peachtree.

Didn't realize my finish was caught on film. Embarrassing.

My 1:16:06 performance was my fastest 10K time in perhaps a decade.

Will's friend Zachary had run cross country in high school, and wanted to attack the race - including the uphills. Will stuck with Zack the first four miles, then stopped off to see the fam at Bellwood. Zachary quickened his pace and finished in exactly 56 minutes. Incredibly, he ran every mile faster than the one before.

Even with his stop at Bellwood, Will finished in exactly an hour.

Found Will in the park, and we ambled up Virginia Avenue to our car, less than a mile from the finish line. Grabbed a couple of Powerades along the way. Chick-fil-A was pouring peach tea and giving away vouchers for peach milkshakes.

Will drove me back to my car near Lenox. I took 400 to 85 to 75 to Moores Mill and Bolton to meet C at Bellwood Coffee. Visited with M and Joel and Becky Norman. Just missed seeing Catherine Norman, in town visiting from Memphis.

Then C & I took Bolton to 285 and 20 east to Panthersville, to W&MC's friends Zachary & Imani from their church. A nice brunch, with bacon sausage grits cheese fruit and pastries. Then up 285 to Dekalb Farmers Market.

Then through Decatur, left at Agnes Scott, right on Memorial, then 20 west to 285 and Bolton to get my car. Didn't get home until 4 pm.

Usually the Peachtree wears me out, but not quite as bad this year. I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow.

Bird > Fournier

In an effort to generate clicks, ESPN tweeted that some guy named Evan Fournier has three times more 3 pointers than Larry Bird. The twitterverse immediately took offense, for the most part. Generated all kinds of debates. The rest of the story: it’s a different game now. Fournier takes three times the number of 3 point shots than Bird. Has he ever won a 3 point contest? League MVP?

Bird averaged more than ten points a game more than the Frenchman. More than 3 times the more rebounds. More than double the assists. Made a higher percentage of shots and free throws. Their 3 point shooting percentage was equal.

To say Larry Bird couldn’t excel in today’s NBA is absurd. His competitiveness, his court awareness, and his passing ability would be unmatched even today.

I will be running the Peachtree Road Race, but I am in group T – way in the back. Unless Will trades with me. Also taking off work on Monday and maybe next Friday.

Thursday: C had her summer book club. I ate leftover homemade pizza and crashed on the couch with Winnie. Flipped on the TV and saw “The Match” was on – Steph Curry & Klay Thompson vs Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelse. The football players won all but one hole, which was a tie. Curry is a good golfer but didn’t get much help from Thompson. Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley calling the action.

I just didn’t feel like searching for something to watch, or changing the channel to Jeopardy. I was on my phone and laptop the whole time.

Up early Friday AM to lift weights. Went to Longhorn at lunch. Brad’s salad came out first so he got a head start. Then he woofed down his chicken and mashed potato. Rodney only ate half his meal. My burger was good, but it was falling apart so I had to eat wife a fork and knife. B was finished and I hadn’t started on my baked potato. B and R were talking (as was I) so there was plenty of conversation while I “finished” – though I left part of the potato on my plate. We left work for lunch at 11:45 and didn’t get back until 1:30.

L&I have been married for 20 years? Goodness.

Not sure what Drew Kelly is doing in retirement. I know he is on the SPdL funeral committee. Should’ve told you he likes pirates and donuts. He used to ride his bike a lot but not sure about any more. At this point in my life I’m scared to ride a bike, fearing cars, etc. We did take the bikes to Destin and rode once al week, but it was fun. A long way to haul the bikes.

Zig Ziglar: “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.”

DENISON: studies are demonstrating the danger of recreational marijuana use to public health, especially threatening the mental health of young men and the safety of those in the workplace.

VLAD GUERRERO  [SABR Bio] was the first Expos player to compile a 30/30 season. In 2001 for MON, Guerrero had 34 HR & 37 SB. He got at least one hit in each of the first 42 games he played against the Texas Rangers, from 09-Apr-2004 to 04-Aug-2006, he never had a hitless game. in 108 career games against Texas, Vlad slashed .395/.461/.661 (OPS 1.122). His nephew homered for the Cubs. Among his three MLB hits, Gabriel Guerrero had, in Miami on 22-Sep-2018, his lone home run in the Bigs. Vlad’s manager proclaimed, “No pitcher can ever feel safe or comfortable releasing the ball toward him. He doesn't take a back seat to anyone I've ever seen play this game. Ever." Frank Robinson completed his thought with, “Every day I find myself saying, 'I can't believe he just did that.' He hits balls harder than anyone I've ever seen." All-Star relief pitcher Jose Mesa added, “You can throw it in the dirt & he'll hit it hard.  You can roll it up there or throw it over his head and he'll hit it hard. Every hitter has a hole [in his swing] but that guy. There's nobody like him in this game. I'm telling you, the Devil himself would be afraid to pitch to that guy.”

Seven Degrees of Pat Sajak

Pat Sajak is retiring from Wheel of Fortune after this next season, whatever that is. No word on Vanna White. Vanna grew up in Myrtle Beach and attended Bauder Fashion College in Atlanta. When I was a freshman at GT several Bauder girls were attending Wieuca Road. Sajak is being replaced by Ryan Seacrest, who grew up in Dunwoody. It was Seacrest who took young Heather Swilley to their junior high prom. Heather kept the red dress, and her daughter wore it to her prom. Heather and husband Lee did Anna & Caleb’s pre-marriage counseling. How’s that for six degrees of Kevin Bacon?

I’ve said it before – my pet peeve if people sitting in their cars in parking lots running the engine just to run the air conditioner. I guess these people aren’t the ones worried about global warming, climate change, burning fossil fuels, etc. I know its hot and people gotta be careful they don’t overheat. But to sit out in the heat during lunch just to get away from people in the office seems like a bit much. I can sit at my desk surrounded by people and still be in my own little world. More on this topic later on in the week.

These are the “How to be changed by the gospel” sermons that my friend Matt liked so much. Not really videos, but just audio with stock photos added.

Checked the word count on this post: 666 (now 723). Reminds me of a junk email I recently received, selling a line of jewelry with “666” on it. The way Satan is being literally and publicly worshipped (and God mocked) is astounding to me. I am offended.

Thursday: up early to play golf. Teed off at 6:15 am.

1. Hit a great drive, long and straight. Hit a second that felt good, but I never found it. Hit one chip long, and a second to the fringe. Chipped and sank a ten foot putt for “par”.

2. Decided to hit an 8 iron even though the tee box was further back than usual. Lost the first shot in the high left rough. Mulligan was better but short of the green. Okay chip. Good lag putt. “Bogey”.

3. Lost one ball right, then pulled one left. Hit one decent shot that wasn’t as far left. Not sure I found that ball but found another nearby. Cruddy chip then a better chip. Two putt. “Double”.

4. Realized a fellow was behind me, who said he wasn’t in a hurry – but it still made me press. Hit a low 7 iron off the tee, then a better mulligan even closer. Shouldn’t have putted from the rough. “Bogey”.

5. Popped a hybrid up toward the road, then drew the mulligan toward the green. Looked great, but it carried 20 yards past the green. Too much club. Moved on to the next hole.

6. Popped up the hybrid short. Scalded a 5 iron from under the tree. I think it hit off the big oak, then clanged off the 150 yard pole. Never found it. Flubbed two 6 irons, then hit a nice 9 iron to the fringe. Good lag putt. Triple.

7. Decent drive that sliced up the hill under a tree. Scalded a nice 5 iron, but it didn’t get a good roll in the wet grass. But then a good 6 iron to the fringe. Poor lag putt. “Double”.

8. Decent drive. Poor wedge shot pulled left. Better mulligan to the back fringe. Two okay chips. Two putt. “Double”.

9. Hit a couple of poor 6 irons. Three actually. A cruddy chip. Then a great uphill putt from off the green, an inch from the hole. Tapped in at 7:24. Made it to the office by 8:15.

YOGI BERRA  [SABR Bio] holds the AL record for career doubles in World Series play. Berra amassed ten doubles during his record 75 World Series games in 14 Series, from 1947-1963. Frankie Frisch’s ten are the NL record, done in 50 WS games over eight series: 1921-1934. Berra appeared as himself on SNL on 13-Oct-1984, Season 10, episode 2. Berra hit a home run on four straight Opening Days, in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958. Since then two more players also did this—Todd Hundley and Gary Carter (all are catchers). Watch "It Ain't Over", a well-written documentary of Yogi's life. Trailer.

Had these cookies at a party, and you know what it reminded of.

July Bobbleheads & SGAs

Another quite incomplete list of bobblehead and other interesting SGAs and special ticket deals for the month of July. I know I’m missing a bunch – please fill me in. Every time I update this list I will bump the Facebook post for your reading pleasure.

July bobble of the month: the Cyclones Elf bobblehead, though the Spencer Strider bobbles given away in Augusta and Rome will also be in high demand.

I am a sucker for the replica jerseys the Stripers give away. As a native of Macon, any Peaches gear is right up my alley. Hey I would trade last year’s Button Gwinnett jersey SGA for this year’s Peaches jersey (XL). Anyone wanna make that trade?

No one has yet to take me up on a trade offer for last year’s Windmill Wash or other Braves bobblehead from 2021 or 2022. Make me an offer!

I will be appearing at least twice this month at Truist Park – most probably tomorrow July 3 as well as July 31 to hopefully see Ohtoni pitch and hit Might have to break out my 60’s era halo topped California Angels cap for the occasion, so I’ll really look like an old man for sure.
