I Will Walk Ten Thousand Steps

I’ve had a pretty busy Friday and Saturday. From 6 am Friday to 7:30 am Saturday I averaged 1,000 steps per hour, for over 25,500 steps in 25-1/2 hours. By 10 am Friday I’d taken 10,000 steps and by 11 am over 11,000.  

These days on cloudless mornings its light outside by 6 am. Friday I teed off at 6:15. After 5 holes with a single golfer behind me, I doubled back behind him and played 4 and 5 again. I finished 11 holes by 7:37 am, so I decided to play 9 more. On this second nine I pretty much only played two balls instead of three or four. I was carrying my little pencil bag instead of my bigger golf bag and push cart, and I was starting to run out of balls. Finished the second nine at 9 am – with only two balls to spare.

On the way home I stopped by two thrift stores and RaceTrac. A squad car was stationed at “dead man’s curve” on the dangerous Bishop Lake Road. Got home and started laundry, and fixed soft tacos for lunch. Mowed the lawn and did more laundry. 

Had the TV on the Memorial Tournament. Looked like a young lady in Scottie Scheffler’s gallery was wearing a ball gown. I showered, took Winnie for a walk, and was out the door by 4 pm. 

I wanted to get downtown before traffic got too bad. Stopped by the Northside Drive Goodwill. Spotted a cool ugly Christmas sweater from Bucee’s but passed.

With traffic so bad I went on down to Matthew’s house to wait for him to come home from work. As I waited, cars were parking nearby for the concert at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

M and I walked the 8/10ths of a mile to the arena, and ascended to the top level. Grabbed cheeseburgers, fries, and bottomless Cokes for $25 – not outrageous for stadium fare. Got to our seats just as the opening act was starting. The Rolling Stones came on at 9 pm and played for two hours. Mercedes Benz was packed, mostly with old people (who had trouble climbing the steep steps in the upper deck.

Since everyone stayed until the end, it took like 15 minutes to egress downstairs and out of the stadium. A nice cool walk back to Matthew’s house. He said the gridlock of cars happened every weekend, due to events at the stadium. Got home just after midnight.

Saturday: up early again to golf. Teed off at 615 am, sneaking ahead of a slowpoke who had arrived before me. Busy morning: a third single was playing right behind him. I actually hit some decent shots, despite only hitting two balls instead of my usual 3 or four.

1. Flubbed my tee shot, then hit a good 6 iron out of the rough. Two cruddy chips, then a good one. My 20 foot lag putt lipped out. Triple.

2. Flubbed the tee shot, then hit a great long chip onto the green. Par putt lipped out. Bogey.  

3. Lost one left. Mulligan bounced down the hill into the right rough. Decent chip out of danger. Double. NOTE: Friday my 8 iron tee shot hit and bounced past the hole, missing the flag by a foot).

4. Decent 7 iron off the tee. Chipped three balls, all decent. Made a nice par putt.

5. Cruddy 6 iron off the tee, then a good chip onto the green. Missed the par putt. Bogey.

6. Cruddy wormburner off the tee that didn’t roll far , then blasted a great long hybrid. Then poked a wedge onto the green – then made the par putt. A great recovery after that short tee ball, on the longest hole on the course.

7. Decent hybrid off the tee, followed by an okay 6 iron. Pulled my wedge shot left, but the mulligan found the green. Two putt for “bogey”.  

8. Pulled my hybrid left off the tee, but hit a decent mulligan. With the ball below my feet I pulled my first wedge shot left, but my mulligan landed on the green near the hole – and sank the putt for a very rare “birdie”. Cue Tiger fist bump.  

9. On the long uphill par three I hit a decent hybrid off the tee, but due to the hill and my usual low shot trajectory the shot didn’t roll as far as I would’ve liked. First chip landed just short of the green, then stuck my mulligan pin high, just left of the hole – and I drained the 6 foot putt for “par”. I had played the last six holes at one over par, perhaps my best round ever. 

Was done at 730 am. Then home to catch up on work.

Over ten thousand steps again, and a 2 day total over 31000. 

Cokes at McDonalds

Not sure that I am buying this explanation of why Cokes at McDonalds tastes better. I have two friends that work at Coke who have confirmed that Coke supplies a slightly thicker syrup to McDonalds to make it taste better. The only other customer that receives the special blend is The Varsity in Atlanta.

My coworkers in Augusta (that I work closely with) have a company-sponsored basketball team that advanced to the semi-finals of their season ending tournament. Brent is supposedly a beast inside. Nikkar is older but can still keep up. Tonight they play the number one team, made up of former college and semi-pro players (they lost).

I am hearing that Dock’s father Neil had been in the hospital, and had been in lots of pain. Neil had been playing golf every week. My coworker Todd and I need to go visit him.

Wednesday: worked until 630 again. Grilled BBQ chicken, salad, and roasted potato wedges for supper. Ceil had heard that the old sitcom “New Girl” was good. I hadn’t thought it was a show she would like, but she loved the first two episodes. Guess we’ll be binge watching that now. Wednesday was Aces forward Kate Martin’s birthday.

Thursday: up early to lift weights at the gym.

Friday: might get a haircut. Might play golf. But Friday night Matthew and I are going to the Rolling Stones concert at Mercedes Benz Stadium. We haven’t ever seen them before. Should be interesting.

Also it sounds like Matthew is moving, to a place closer to his work in Decatur. He might be taking some of the furniture taking up space in our garage.

Pancakes For Supper

Crazy as usual with me. Worked past 630 Tuesday night. Supper was pancakes, sausage, and fruit. Was too worn out to get out my laptop.

Up early to run at the gym Wednesday morning.

Work work work. Project project project. Not enough time to MANAGE everything I'm supposed to look after, much less micromanage like they want me to. Handed off a big chunk of responsibility to a different team, with no idea if they'll be able to handle it. So much additional work on SAP. Four others are retiring.

Eliminate Hurry

Just finished a good book: “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World”, by pastor John Mark Comer, who dialed back from preaching 7 sermons every Sunday at a growing church out West. He looked at the unhurried life of Jesus, with more commands to abide and be than to do. 

Monday: left work at 510 pm. Arrived home and helped load our old couch on Lee’s trailer. Lee moseyed out first, taking the curving Bishop Lake Road toward his house. Young Carlson and I caught up with him, and we passed a sports car that had just crashed into the bushes, with a smashed windshield and crumbled roof. Looked like its occupants were okay.

Carlson mentioned that (1) we were blessed to have not gone ahead of Lee’s pickup, as we might have been involved in the crash, and (2) that East Cobb teenagers challenge each other to see who can make the “Bishop Lake Run” the fastest. Bishop Lake Road is a beautiful, scenic, curvey, and hilly two lane around a small lake, with quaint lake houses with docks and pontoon boats. I love taking this relaxing drive home from Johnson Ferry Road, instead of the highly trafficked Upper Roswell Road, but man now I need to be all the more careful.

We got the couch unloaded and placed in Lee’s house. Drove the helpers home. Had some work issues to deal with. Ate supper. It was after 8 pm, and I was worn out. Helped with the dishes and crashed on the couch.

Tuesday: up early to run at the gym. Really got to train hard for the Peachtree Road Race. Currently down to 15 emails after starting the day with over 50, but I have a lot of complicated orders to catch up on.

Tuesday afternoon I looked up and it was pouring down rain. A real gusher. And I had my windows cracked, and had parked at the far end of the parking lot. Great. I sprinted the 100 yards through the downpour to my car and hopped inside. Decided to drive as close to the door as possible, then waited but the rain never let up. Grabbed a t-shirt to wear. I was cold and shivering from being wet. It didn’t seem to rain in East Cobb.

Millie's First Birthday

Sunday School with about 28 in attendance. After worship ended at 1245 we made a couple of stops on the way home. Millie’s birthday party was at 4 pm, leaving not much time for C to make her side dish. We left around 345 and drove past several groceries and got on the Interstate before C realized we needed to stop. Already bad traffic. Got off and stopped at a Publix. I found a quick back roads route loaded with potholes. Arrived 50 minutes late. Grr. Anna & Caleb and Matthew and Monzie arrived just after us.

Millie had been sick, so all the families with young kids didn’t come. Just our family and one other older couple. MC’s parents were sick. M&M and A&C helped Will prepare the food: grilled Philly steak & onion sandwiches with a special sauce, roasted sweet potato fries, corn on the cob, and Ceil’s potato salad. Cake and ice cream. A feast.

Monday: up early to run on the treadmill. Took over 35 minutes to resolve some computer issues. Started with 112 emails in my in box from being off last week. Receiving more all moring, but currently have it down to 55 emails. Got plenty of emails that I just need to print out, so the number will hopefully will drop down by the end of the day.

Will’s brother in law Thomas is taking another respite from his job at Google. He and wife Holly are embarking on another long cross-country road trip, this time in the sprinter van they had bought from Anna’s work, the van formerly owned by High Country Outfitters. Their trip so far: Hilton Head to Atlanta to Memphis through Alabama to Memphis, then Little Rock for a wedding, Oklahoma, and Kansas to the Google office in Denver, then to Rocky Mountain National Park.   

Lots of flack from some about Fever teammates not sticking up for Caitlin. Saw a video of Clark walking into the arena in NYC. Looked like she was limping, though she was still wearing fancy heels.

Have the problems from your past ruined the promises of your future? God wants you to move past the bad things that happened in your past.

Acts 7:54-8:3 Steven is selected as one of the first deacons. His enemies put him on a mock trial on trumped up charges. Steven speaks, saying the God now resides in the hearts of His followers. Steven died, and Saul ravaged the church, putting believers into prison. This is the first we see of Saul. God then would use Saul to change the world.

Declarations of who I am in Christ:

1. I was made on purpose, for a purpose. God wastes nothing. Saul is from Turkey, the city of Tarsus, born around the same time as Jesus. A very strategic city, with lots of black haired goats, whose hair was used to make tents.

Saul was a tent maker. Acts 18:1-3. From a young age Paul was around lots of people. He was a Roman citizen with all the rights that came with it. Acts 16:37-39.

Paul was part of the group of fine culture Rome spread from Greece. God uniquely prepared Paul as a chosen instrument. Acts 9:15. This transformed Paul's life.

2. My identity is Received, not Achieved. Phil 3:2-6. Beware of imposters. Don't boast. If anyone has a reason to boast, it was Paul. Born a Jew, a Hebrew of Hebrews from the tribe of Benjamin, the only brother born in the promised land. A Pharisee back when that was a good thing, having a zeal for the Lord. Paul loved God.

Phil 3:7-11 Paul counts all these things as loss, all the advantages he had in the world, so that he could know and love God. This was the same guy who belittled Steven.

Better to give up achievements and control to God.

Phil 3:12-14...That I press on from where I am, toward the call of Christ Jesus

3. It's not how I start, but how I finish. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 Paul wrote from jail "I have fought the good fight ". We're fortunate to become citizens of heaven.

John Newton wrote the hymn Amazing Grace…despite living a hard life as a ship captain of a slave ship, estranged from his father with shame and guilt in his life. But by the time her died Newton was an influential preacher who said "I may not be the man man I want to be, but by the grace of God that I'm not the man I used to be".

Repeat to yourself every day: I am called and gifted by God. I can do anything He wants me to do. God gives me the power.

Sweatmans BBQ

We had an eventful last day at the beach. Made it to the ocean by 8 am. Sure the sun had come up at 6 am, but it was early for Ceil. Sunny but a cool breeze. Low tide, so there was much more to explore. Took Ceil almost two hours to comb the sand looking for seashells, and she found plenty of. Winnie and I went out on the sand dunes that stretched way out to sea.

Stopped by a bakery on the way back for an apple fritter. Packed up then went out on one last shopping excursion. Grabbed a Publix sub for lunch.

I didn't want to hit Atlanta at rush hour, and we did a great job with that. Didn't leave Pawleys Island until 330. Headed south to Georgetown then east on 17A, north of Monks Corner to the outskirts of tiny Holly Hill.

A few years ago when we attended a family wedding in Charleston, Matthew had mentioned an out of the way BBQ place that had been too far upstate for us to try - but Ceil and I were able to go there this time.

Sweatmans is one of the top BBQ places in SC, out in a field in the outskirts of Holly Hill. The place hasn't changed much in well over 50-60 years, if not longer. We arrived before 530, but cars were coming and going at a steady pace the whole time we were there. A place where people of all races spoke to each other. An older couple were eating out on the front porch. The lady asked about our dog, and later came over to pet Winnie as we ate on a picnic table out front.

Ceil got a quarter chicken, green beans, and baked beans. I got the BBQ plate with two meaty ribs, pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and Sweatmans' signature hash. The sauces were mustard based, or vinegar based.

Winnie sat with us. The serving lady directed me to a spigot to get water for Winnie. A great meal.

Then we continued to cut across the state on back roads, through Orangeburg, finding I-20 east of Aiken. We'd missed Atlanta rush hour, but we were so late that weekend construction had begun. Pulled into our driveway at 11 pm. Took over 30 minutes to unpack.

Listening to "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry", by a pastor who finally dialed back and simplified his life. Wrote how Jesus never hurried, even when his friend Lazarus was deathly ill. Wrote on what it means to observe the Sabbath - one of the Ten Commandments. About how just about all Americans are addicted to hurry (and their smart phones). Good stuff.

Up early to play golf. Beautiful sunrise. Teed off at 620 am. Brought my little pencil bag with no woods. Hit three or four balls.
1. One of my tee shots was decent. Pulled 3 fairway shots left. One good approach to the fringe. A couple of good chips. Bogey.
2. One decent tee shot, to the fringe. Couple good lag putts. Par.
3. Pulled two 8 irons left, then hit a nice low shot straight, that rolled to the back of the green. Okay lag. Par.
4. Two of the tee shots were fair. Chipped 3 balls onto the green. Bogey.
5. Hit one decent tee shot, that landed short of the green. One decent chip. Took three tries before I sank the 15 foot putt. Par.
6. Hit one low tee shot straight, that got a good roll. Hit one fairway shot that I thought was good, but never found it. Hit two decent chips. Bogey.
7. My first tee shot was decent. Okay fairway shot that didn't go as far as I wanted. Hit one okay approach that faded left. Mulligan was better, to the fringe. Okay lag. Bogey.
8. Hit one good tee shot. Pulled two approach shots left, but the third found the fringe. Two putt for par.
9. Pulled 3 tee shots left. Poked them back from under a tree. Two decent chips. Two putt. Double.

Speaking of golf, Caleb bought Anna a new golf bag (and a driver cover that looks like Goose. Her first lesson is Sunday.
