Austin Riley: Top NL Third Baseman

Saw this: since 2021 Austin Riley leads all NL third basemen in average, home runs, hits, OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage), OPS+, fWAR (he the best fielding 3B), WRC+, and bWAR, whatever those things are.

As of Tuesday night the Braves had won three straight. Tuesday was a walkoff. They were in third place in the division, then three games behind the Phillies, then five behind the first place Mets. They were only one game below .500 – going 17-11 after starting the season with 7 straight losses, a winning percentage of .607.

Braves had won 60% of their last 28 games without two All-Star starters and Acuna. Down one run in the bottom of the 9th with a veteran Reds lefthanded reliever on the mound. Lefty Harris had beaten him last night, and had just gotten another hit to bring up the game winning run to the plate. Righty Eli White was up. Young Eli has been playing well, but still doesn’t have all the experience in the world. Snitker went with the lefty vs lefty matchup, pinch-hitting Rosario, who has a history of clutch hits to his credit. Against that pitcher Rosario had gone 1-2 with a home run. A pretty sound managerial decision, all things considered.

This time Rosario couldn’t come through. Someone on social media said Snitker should be fired for pinch-hitting Rosario. Another reason why I need to get off social media. But all the sports talk guys were second guessing the decision as well. Sean Murphy was available as well.

Matthew went to the Braves game last night with Will and the girlies. Shivonne took her new pink baseball glove. I may go to a game next week. A friend told me about a new section of seats that has an all you can eat concession stand. Will try to get a ticket there.

ROY OSWALT [B-R Bio] is the only pitcher to begin his career with 15 straight wins against another team. He beat the Reds 15 times (over 19 starts) before he ever lost to them. He played for COL in 2013 in the last season of his career. Oswalt’s relatively slight stature (5'10", 150 lbs.) scared away early scouts. His 6.6 WAR was the best for pitchers in 2007. ARod’s 9.4 led all players. In 2005 Oswalt’s record was 20-10, and 20-12 the following year. He appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman to read the “Top 10 Perks of Getting Into the World Series” in 2006.

Last night was the last small group meeting (I think). We finished the gospel of Luke. Luke 24:36-49 Jesus Appears to the Disciples...36. As they were talking, Jesus himself appeared before them. He said “Peace to you!” 37. They were startled and frightened and thought they saw a ghost. 38. Jesus asked “Why are you troubled?” Why do you doubt? 39. See my hands and my feet, that it really is me. A ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones like me. 40. And Jesus showed them his hands and feet. 41. While they were still marveling, Jesus said to them “Got anything to eat?” 42. They gave Him a piece of broiled fish. 43. He ate it right there in front of them.

44. Jesus said “This is what I had said when I was with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45. Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures. 46. He said “It is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47. that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48. You are witnesses of these things. 49. I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

When I saw this photo of my coworker Roger, I thought he finally got a haircut. Nope. Hasn't cut his hair or beard in ten years.

Poor Customer Service

Did you see the viral video on the news of the Frontier Airlines customer service representative who refused to check in a ticket holding passenger to their flight? The passenger arrived 50 minutes before the flight instead of the required hour early, and wasn’t happy about having to pay an additional $25 charge – but still pulled out his credit to pay. The Frontier employee literally refused to do her job, and the passenger missed the flight.   

Left work yesterday at 6 pm. Was going to stop by Taco Bell but it was closed, probably due to the poor customer service. The Taco Bell / KFC down the road didn’t participate on the Taco Bell app. I stopped at Dollar Tree – more bad customer service. Not the first time. By then it was after 630 and I didn’t feel like driving out of my way to a different Taco Bell. Made it home at 705 and had a delicious supper of leftovers: Matthew’s cheesy jasmine rice, Ceil’s Mexican casserole, and a baked potato.  

Man how the world has changed since I started working. Used to be that the customer was always right – especially from my position as a customer service representative. My job is not to be the bad guy. That’s for the managers over me. Sure the customer’s forecast may have been wrong. Maybe they forgot to order, or the need for an item just came up. Just like with personal relationships, it doesn’t do any good to remind the customer of their mistake. Our customer buys 95% of their metal from us - $50 million a year. We even sell them paint. It’s better for us to jump through hoops to get them what they need than to make them want to look elsewhere for material. To let another supplier in the door would give them the opportunity to take business away from us.

Some people who didn’t come up in sales can forget this. There so much more push back with the customer these days. For sure if it costs more to get them what they need quickly, certainly its fair to pass those costs along to them. My company handed out bracelets that say “SAY YES AND FIGURE IT OUT”. If the customer orders something and I sent a little bit of material one mile down the road, and then the fabricator will take 2 weeks to drill out the part, then we have to ship it to the plater for another week’s worth of processing before it ships to the customer – well it the little bit of material has just delivered when the customer wanted to cancel the order, I wouldn’t force the customer to not be able to cancel the order if they realized they didn’t need it. Sure it might be a little bit of extra work for me to cancel the order and bring the material back, but why cause the driller and the plater to take up time processing unwanted material when they could be working on other items they need? Instead of “teaching the customer a lesson” it’s going to leave a negative taste in their mouth, perhaps prompting the customer to buy what they need from somewhere else.        

Some people need to listen to Clark Howard, to hear how he treats customers, how he answers dumb questions over and over. All that said, for sure management has turned a blind eye to how much more work this new computer system is. We did add more people out in the plant, and more people in inside sales and fabrication and the IQ Team, whatever that is. But no more people to help out with the tubing, or with our team. Not sure they understand all the extra work involved. Sales might be down 35%, but it takes just as much work to make and bill out 65 parts than it does a hundred.

I keep trying to remember Philippians 2:3-8: “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind count others as more important than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who though he existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, be becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross”.   

I’ve spent the last week with 30-40 emails on my To Do list. Nice to be able to get the number down under 30, almost to 25. It never ends. Now back up to 35, and I neglected some time sensitive work I needed to do delay, that coworkers are waiting on. Maybe tomorrow.

Dawgs Sign #1 QB

UGA signed the #1 QB in the nation. Still has to play his senior season of high school. Smart to commit early in case he gets hurt. Sure the kid could change his mind. He turned down the most money to sign with the Dawgs. He is from Tennessee, so runner-up Oregon would have been a long way from home. I like how he didn't wear jersey number one, like so many prima donna QB's these days. He wears #2. Must be a fan of Shedeur. If this Jason kid is any good, I'll be posting plenty of pictures of him in the future.

Anna & Caleb went to the Braves Reds game last night. A good game. This weekend they took Goose out swimming in the Chattahoochee.

Monday: I worked until 6 then drove home and cut the grass with the battery powered mower that my neighbor gave me. Not very powerful. Doesn't suck up the prickly gumballs and pinecones. Not good. Was almost dark when I finished. Supper was BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, baked okra, and tossed salad. Too much for one plate. Didn't sit down until after 830.

Up early to lift weights at the gym this AM. Ceil has her art class tonight, so finally a night to relax (or did I? Tune in tomorrow).

Did I mention that on Sunday night I didn't wake up once, until my alarm went off? Probably didn't drink enough during the day.

Denison: a task force at Harvard found antisemitism has "infiltrated coursework, social life, the hiring of faculty, and the worldview of academic programs. Jewish students "were insulted, shunned, harassed, and hounded in a hundred different ways." An Iranian terror attack in England was thwarted with just hours to spare. A synagogue was the probable target.

Lawnmowers & Downed Trees

Left work Friday at 445. Stopped by RaceTrac for a drink, and Home Depot to shop for a lawnmower. Was in my sedan so I planned on taking Ceil's SUV to make the purchase. Braves were on TV so we watched that.

Saturday morning Ceil met Anna down on Howell Mill for a big sale at East Fork (fun fact: East Fork's founder is the great grandson of the legendary artist Henri Matisse). There is a hefty aftermarket for certain East Fork dinnerware, so perhaps its a decent investment. I did so me housework and did some computer work in my office. Ordered a new lawnmower that was on sale, plus I had $97 of gift cards that I'd been putting off using.

News: Saturday night most of the bad weather was south of us. Braves went into a rain delay. We got rain and saw some far off lightning but nothing bad. Then we heard the loud crash of a tree falling somewhere behind our house. I turned on the back lights and stepped outside but really couldn't see anything. It was dark, but from what we could tell our backyard looked pretty normal.

Our neighbors came out, so I went to talk to them. He commented on the Syracuse shorts I was wearing. He was wearing a Pitt sweatshirt. They pointed out a huge load of trash they had decluttered from their house. I apologized for my high grass, explaining that my lawnmower broke. They pointed to a box, and insisted on giving me a brand new lawnmower they had bought but hadn't used due to allergies. Wouldn't let me say no.

I went home and another neighbor knocked on our door, checking to see if we were okay. She'd heard the crash as well. We pointed out a tree in the backyard next door that had split from the top, as if it had been hit by a tornado.

Saturday night Ceil had watched a movie. When it was over I flipped over and the Dodgers leadoff hitter has just stepped in to start the game. I watched until 1130 before going to bed. Snitker encouraged them to start the game so late since Sunday’s game was a night game. It was the latest start time in Truist Park history.

Sunday morning I went outside and saw that in addition to the split tree, two other large trees had fallen in the backyard next door. They'd fallen away from the house, down across the creek. A few years ago another large tree a large tree had fallen in the same backyard. Since the hill is so steep, there's little that can be done. I took Winnie out on a little walk and saw the same neighbor lady from the night before. She showed me a video where she had gone out in the backyard to survey the damage. The hill isn't quite as steep in her backyard. 

Later I realized I'd been standing there talking to her with one Croc strap flipped up, and other flipped back. How embarrassing. Not that I was at all otherwise presentable.

After Sunday School (23 in attendance) and lunch, we drove past the video lady and almost ran her over. Strike two. I assembled the new lawnmower and started charging the battery. Cleaned out a little in the garage and cleared off the driveway.

Ceil had attended a bridal shower after lunch. When she returned it was time to drive down to W&MC's to babysit. W&MC had scored tickets to the Braves game. The second of Austin Riley’s two home runs last night (what did I tell you about Riley, by the way) came in the RaceTrac Home Run Inning, so today I get a free hot dog. I went out and picked up a pie from Antico. 10 pm and W&MC were just now heading home. A late night.

Earlier this week a movie had been filming right down the street from W&MC's house, using the old houses for a period film. Old cars and street lights from the 1950's had been brought in. Mark Wahlburg was in the movie. A week or two ago scenes from the Sylvester Stallone show Tulsa Nights had been filming just down the street from my office, as well as at our metal processor downtown.

This morning (1) I went to the gym, (2) stopped by the post office, (3) gassed up at BP, and (4) stopped at RaceTrac for gas. Bad decision on stopping at BP. Even with 15 cents off per gallon at BP, the gas would’ve been cheaper at RaceTrac. Still made it to work on time.

Are You A People Pleaser? Why it’s hard for some people to say “Yes”. Seems like some people pleasers get taken advantage of. More on this tomorrow.

Denison: in response to the loneliness epidemic and a loss of trust in the establishment, large numbers of young adults—and young men in particular—are turning to the Savior secularism. In the UK, the number of young men attending church services has increased fivefold, and fourfold for young women. Gen Z adults are the most likely group to report an increase in Bible reading. This trend is continuing across all demographics. Many churches in Great Britain were so full on Easter Sunday that they had to turn people away, and 17000 people were baptized in France over the Easter weekend.

Friday: good to get out of the office. Our fabricator helps sponsor a Chamber of Commerce fundraiser at the gun range they own, and they invited us down to take part. Over 170 in attendance. Pastries for breakfast. Opening speeches and instructions with a God honoring opening prayer and playing of the national anthem, followed by everyone shooting their guns at the same time (below). Lunch was cooked on site by Outback Steakhouse, with several choices: burgers, grilled chicken, Philly steaks, macaroni & cheese, cookies, and cokes.

I was to shoot ten shots with the beginners at noon, but I was the only one there when the 11 am group finished. The guide gave me one on one instructions, and I knocked out ten shots in just a few minutes. Didn’t come close to hitting the flying clay targets. My three coworkers were shooting at the same time, so I went over to watch them finish (top: Brad, Eric, & Alex). Got back to the office by 2 pm.

Interesting that some on social media were using NY Times columnist David Brooks to slam Trump and the National Day of Prayer, while Denison quotes Brooks praising Trump (below). For sure many times prayer should be a personal, private time between me and God, though there are times when two or three should agree in prayer together, and entire congregations should indeed lift God up in prayer corporately. Prayer should never be for show, and for sure there are blowhards of all political persuasions that try to use God to further their own personal and political ambitions. This is not new.

In a related note, I also found Andy Stanley’s recent quote to be interesting: “I wish I’d discovered earlier in my faith journey that it is not good enough to be good. I must be seen doing good. Otherwise I am good for nothing”. Then he quotes Matthew 5:16 “…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”.

What are your thoughts?

Denison: columnist David Brooks, a longtime critic of Donald Trump, wrote a recent New York Times article surprisingly titled, “Trump’s Single Stroke of Brilliance.” Brooks credits the administration for its energy: “It is flooding the zone, firing on all cylinders, moving rapidly on all fronts at once. It is operating at a tremendous tempo, taking the initiative in one sphere after another.” In his view, those opposed to Mr. Trump need to match his “clarity of purpose” with a “one-sentence mission statement” and a clear strategy for implementing it.

Pet Peeve: so many on social media never take a stand on a topic, never offer an opinion, but just throw out questions in an effort to get comments and views. I try to avoid most of those folks.

JOHN OLERUD [SABR Bio] is the only player to hit for the cycle in a season where he had only one triple – and he did it twice. On 11-Sep-1997, Olerud hit for the cycle for the Mets. The triple in that game was his only one of the season. His previous cycle had come 405 games earlier, on the final day of the strike-shortened 1994 season. Then, playing for Seattle on 12-Jun-2001, he again hit for the cycle again. That triple was also his only one of the year—and came during a five-season span in which he hit no other triples (1999–2003). Olerud's pitching record at Washington State University was 26-4 with a 3.17 ERA over his 3 seasons. He also threw 241.1 innings, setting multiple PAC-10 & PAC-10 North records. ME: Olerud's story about Rickey Henderson is legendary, though supposedly not true.

Luke 24:1-12 the Resurrection of Christ: 1. On Sunday at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2. They found the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. 3. When the went inside they did not find Jesus’ body. 4. Two angels appeared in dazzling glory. 5. This frightened them. The angels said “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” 6. He is not here. He has risen. Remember how he told you, when he was in Galilee 7. that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and rise on the third day? 8. They remembered these words. 9. Returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the disciples and others. 10. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told the apostles 11. who did not believe them. 12. Peter rose and ran to the tomb, and looked inside. He saw the linen cloths, and went home marveling at what had happened.

2025's Best College QB ?

Former Bama QB Greg McElroy says the top college QB is Clemson’s Cade Klubnik. I think GT QB Haynes King is just as good as Cade. Guess Arch is chopped liver. Not sure what happened to the great Carson Beck – good thing he didn’t transfer to UNC, with the week Belichick is having.

Former FSU QB Danny Kanell is always saying stuff to make the fans of other teams mad, but during the NFL Draft he was actually saying things that made sense. Of course I forgot what it was that he said.

Ceil signed up for a 4 week art class down at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, so I’ll have Tuesday nights free for the next month.

Tuesday: not a good day eating. Or maybe it was: the Cozy Coop chicken biscuit, 3/4 of a Jason’s Deli sandwich, two slices of Marco’s supreme pizza, then two Taco Bell burritos for supper.

After work Tuesday I spent a couple of hours cleaning out the stuff we had piled in Matthew’s room. Was also able to get more of my summer clothes out of the attic.

Wednesday: got a deal at Burger King after work yesterday. Large fries and an ice cream cone for a dollar. I had worked past six. Ceil had small group but mine is tonight. I crashed on the couch.

Thursday: lifted weights before work. Dreamland BBQ for lunch. Man I work my butt off and do everything I can do, but it’s never enough. Walked in to work to face 3 or 4 new problems. Impossible to keep up with everything. People entering orders where there’s no material to use, so I have to check behind them to make it right. Then others are mad because something got done, when if we hadn’t done it, they wouldn’t have known how to do it themselves.

At least no one here had a heart attack like at our partner company out in Conyers. We were supposed to drive out and visit with them tomorrow. It’s supposed to be a big event with a lots of food, etc already in place. Might be hard to cancel at this late hour, but one year they had to cancel due to weather, so we’ll see. They’re a Christian company, and the employees are real close, all good, salt of the earth company. Not sure but the guy might be someone that I’m in contact with every day.

M cooked supper on Thursday night: grilled salmon & chicken with pineapple, and some fancy jasmine rice with bay leaves. C tossed the salad. I was in my office zooming with my small group.

Vice President JD Vance visited the Nucor steel mill in Berkeley South Carolina Thursday, outside of Charleston. Ryerson's processing plant is right next door.

Denison on how to hear God’s voice. Just after the start of the American Revolution in 1775, the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to decide how to defeat the strongest military in the world. After selecting George Washington to lead their forces, Congress called for the Colonies to join together in “a Day of public Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer; that they may with united Hearts & Voice, confess their Sins before God, and supplicate the all wise and merciful disposer of events, to avert the Desolation and Calamities of war.”

May the Bobbleheads Be With You

My far from complete list of MLB and MiLB bobblehead giveaways and other SGAs for the merry month of May. What did I miss?

What are the best bobbles of the month? Saturday's Dick Allen bobblehead is based on his iconic Sports illustrated cover, juggling baseballs in the dugout. How cool is that? I loved those old red White Sox uniforms.

What would be some other great bobbles fashioned after memorable Sports Illustrated covers? The Braves could've done a triple bobble with Justin Upton, BJ Upton, & Kate Upton. That would've been something. 

For some reason there always seem to be a bunch of Star Wars bobbleheads in early May, but for the life of me I have no idea why. Anyone know?

Question of the month: with the oversaturation of bobbleheads by teams like the Braves, are SGA bobbleheads becoming less valuable than previous years? Are they selling for less this year? Let me know what you think.

Like I said last month: isn’t it great that teams just give away all these bobbleheads, just for the price of a ticket? I always try to remember that they don’t have to give away anything, so I try to not complain when every SGA isn’t a never seen before talking race car triple bobble with real wheels and a motor. Sure the giveaway is an effort to attract fans who may normally not attend, but for us collectors, it’s a treasure.
