Week 5 Recap

Geoff Collins wore a different cap in the second half. In the first half he wore a white cap with a colored bill. At halftime he changed to a navy cap. Guess he was trying to change his luck. Probably wore a third cap during warmups. Wish Collins would pay that much attention to the actual game. He elected to punt instead of wait for a review on a possible first down completion down to the five yard line.

 

Poor Tobias Oliver is snakebit. Fumbles just before crossing the goal line, then later another fumble was returned for a Temple touchdown. That’s a 14 point swing. The score could’ve easily been tied at 14 all. Oliver had his best passing day, forcing the defense to not crowd the box, opening up the run. James Graham did even better, showing off his strong and mostly accurate arm. A couple of passes were dropped. Had Graham played against the Citadel the Jackets would’ve won.

 

A few thoughtless penalties added to the dismal afternoon, including the defense lineman pulling the ballcarrier’s helmet off and tossing it away. Tech was almost called for a chopblock. After Tech tackled Temple in the end zone for a safety, the Jackets almost returned the favor by nearing getting tackled in the end zone themselves. Luckily a replay showed Tech hadn’t  touched the ball before the free kick bounced into the end zone. Safeties on two consecutive plays. Not sure that’s ever happened before.

 

Temple’s wide receiver, number one, threw a fit when he thought he’s been interfered with. A typical number one.

 

The nice gold face masks made their debut. Hopefully they’re here to stay. Tech wore black and/or navy masks for about 30 years, and I’ve hated every minute. Unfortunately the Jackets also added ridiculous long gold undershirts that stuck out underneath the jerseys. One step forward, two steps back. Not sure those new grey superhero costumes are gonna help much next week against UNC, who almost upset the number one team in the nation today.

UNC looked good in their basic home uniform: blue helmets and jersey, white pants and cleats. Mack Brown So did Clemson in their simple all white jerseys and pants. The Heels came to play. Hard for Clemson to get up for every game, though their opponents all show up ready to take their best shot. UNC made it 20-21 with just over a minute remaining and courageously went for the win instead of the game-tying extra point. Then UNC almost recovered the onside kick.  

Already there are cries for Clemson to drop in the polls. Bama let Ole Miss score 31. UGA didn’t beat Notre Dame bad enough. The Irish barely beat a lowly ACC team. Suddenly winning isn’t enough to keep your ranking.

 

Perhaps Auburn should be number one – they beat up on lowly Mississippi State. My high school bud Johnny Crawford officiated on the loveliest village on the plains.

 

Interesting that Clemson’s talented, true freshman third string QB played special teams against UNC. Perhaps he won’t be redshirted.

Jalen Hurts was in Heisman form again Saturday against Texas Tech. The Sooners won big.

 

Notre Dame trailed at halftime, before talking the lead from UVA in the second half. A race game featuring two teams wearing grey facemasks.

Jacob Eason led Washington past USC in Seattle.

 

The self-proclaimed “best QB in the SEC” Kellen Mond almost let woeful Arkansas beat his mighty Texas A&M Aggies. Mond was sacked on a late third down play, forcing a much longer field goal.

 

Tua had another big game, and Bame won big over Ole Miss.

 

With Hornibrook finally quarterbacking FSU, the Noles have turned things around. They led NC State the entire game.

 

Michigan finally found someone they could beat. Must be the new helmets.

Worked on setting up my CPAP machine but I gotta do some reading and registering and talking to customer service. Watched a few sitcoms. GT basketball: who could they get to coach? Mark Price? But most programs want to get rid of rule breakers.

 

Friday: boss brought in apple fritters for breakfast. BBQ at lunch. I need to skip supper.

 

Tomorrow GT plays at 3:30. Clemson at the same time. NC State won’t be a cakewalk. UGA plays at 7 pm vs Tennessee. Also Braves.

 

Comcast does not own AT&T. You can buy phone service from either. Better to “bundle” cable / phone / internet with one or the other.

 

We had Comcast cable but Comcast internet didn’t work well in our house. So we got AT&T internet, which is cheaper if we have an AT&T home phone.

 

If possible do not pay to rent / buy the physical home phone device from AT&T or Comcast. They bill you monthly and over the years that charge adds up. Hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a phone you get at WalMart for $40.00.

The Good Old Days

Every now and then a store will celebrate an anniversary and roll back prices, or offer a free deal. Usually the lines are long of folk clammering for the deal. Last week for National Cheeseburger Day I went to Cheeseburger Bobby's for a free burger. Had to buy fries and a Coke. I wanted to go to Ted's Montana Grille for a $6.00 burger and fries, but I was at the Braves game with Will.

 

Occasionally a minor league team will roll back prices and play an old timey game, with old throwback uniforms, announcements made from the field through a megaphone, and cheap ticket and concession prices. If I hear of one we will go, though it will probably be at night.

In June the Phillies wore their all red 1979 uniforms, and dressed the Braves in their own 1979 unis. The Reds are celebrating their 150th season and throughout the season, twice per month wore 12 different throwback uniforms, including the Big Red Machine uniforms from the mid-70's and the sleeveless Ted Kluszewski-era vests from the 60's.

 

Yesterday M called. He had taken a shower and the water wouldn't turn off. I told him how to turn off the water. Later I talked to Ceil, who was trying to work the problem. M hadn't turned off the water, just turned a different knob to turn off the cold water. Left work at 507. We went to Home Depot. The plumber who'd installed the fixture had stripped the screw, so we'll have to wait on a plumber to come today.

 

I'd offered to take Ceil out to dinner but she just wanted to go home. At 8:05 I called Pizzeria Lucca and placed an order. Arrived at 8:16, and walked back out with my pie 2 minutes later. Was home by 8:21. Watched some Braves and the sitcom Schooled.

 

Hopefully I don't have to go home today for the plumber. Lunch meeting: Jason's Deli BBQ sandwich. Tomorrow lunch meeting is Spiced Rite BBQ.

 

Drew Kelly posted the topic of SPDLU but it didn't tickle my fancy that much. Plus we were having a "situation" at home last night. Details to follow.

 

I will check out the GT Collins took Temple to the White House article. On the drive home last night I took a break from my book Gary Sinese (Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump) to listen to a GT podcast by a fan. The guy just talked and talked and rambled and rambled. Made sense but kept repeating himself. Too long. Sure Tech is rebuilding and Collins admitted to mistakes in the loss to 0-2 Citadel. Repeated taunting penalties while losing to an FCS opponent is inexcusable. You don't see UGA or Bama or Clemson do that. 

 

Collins needs to take the redshirt off his freshman QB and play him. If not, Collins may not be around in 2023 when the kid is a senior. Collins will have plenty of time to recruit even better QB's if GT is successful.

 

And of course Tech is unveiling their new gold face masks on the road against Temple. Not even a conference game. Not at home. Who is making the decisions on North Avenue? 

 

Marty Brennaman is 77 years old. Been broadcasting the Reds since 1974. 45 years. Today was his last game. A couple of his contemporaries: Bob Uecker is 85. Broadcasting the Brewers games since 1971. 48 years. Vin Scully is 91. Broadcast the Dodgers from 1950-2016. 67 years.

 

Dennison: Whatever our view of President Trump or his opponents, let's remember two biblical imperatives as the impeachment inquiry proceeds.

One: We are called to pray for our leaders and respect their office even if we do not respect the person (1 Timothy 2:1–2). This principle applies to leaders of both parties across the political spectrum. If they are in public office, they are to receive our intercession.

Two: We are to speak truth in ways that glorify God and advance the common good. This verse is a perpetual command from the Lord: "When you talk, do not say harmful things, but say what people need—words that will help others become stronger. Then what you say will do good to those who listen to you" (Ephesians 4:29 NCV). Such speech will be a powerful witness in these polarizing days. Frederick Buechner: "If you want to be holy, be kind."

CHARLIE GRIMM  [SABR Bio] his wife was allowed to spread his ashes over the playing surface of Wrigley Field after his death. Charlie died in 1983 and his wife, Marion Sayers Grimm, obtained permission to spread his ashes on the field in April of 1984. Former Cubs owner Bill Wrigley assisted Mrs. Grimm. He led the league in fielding percentage more times than any other National League first baseman. Led in fielding % 7 times. Was never lower than .993% in the years he led: 1920, 23, 24, 28, 30, 32 & 33. He was incorrectly credited with a run-batted-in during a game in 1930, that when corrected almost 70 years later would alter one of baseball most revered records. In the game on 28‑Jul‑1930(1) Grimm was credited with one of Hack Wilson's 2 RBI. When the typo was discovered in 1999 by Cliff Kachline, one of SABR's founding members, it changed Wilson's already unbreakable record for RBI in a season from 190 to 191. Babe Ruth correctly predicted that his record of 60 HR in a season would be broken before Wilson's RBI record. No one has come within 25 of that record since 1938.

Tech's Gold Masks: Thumbs Up

See where Tech was wearing gold facemasks on their practice helmets? They look good, better than those black monstrosities they've been wearing for almost 40 years. The gold mask blends in with the helmet, for a better visual look – like white masks look good on white helmets.

 

Actually not black masks any more – the last year or so they've been navy blue. Typical Tech grad just had to correct me for accuracy's sake. Whatever. You sure can't tell black from navy on TV or from the stands. The dark mask on gold and / or white helmets just dominates the appearance, totally taking away from what could be a good-looking helmet.

Come to think of it, if Tech is smart they won't debut those gold masks on the road at Temple this weekend, but wait until the next week when they're wearing special uniforms against UNC. Not that GT has every been that smart with anything related to uniforms. BTW GT can wear those ridiculous three dark adidas stripes on their practice helmets as long as they never consider wearing them in a game. Give adidas or Nike or Under Armor an inch and they'll take a mile.

ESPN is finally getting the idea that Jake Fromm may be a first round draft pick. ESPN has been so focused on Tua and young Trevor Lawrence and anyone they can scrape up out west (this year its Oregon's Hebert) that Fromm had been forgotten. All Fromm has done in two years is lead the Dawgs to two SEC Championship Games, a National Championship Game, and run off two five star quarterbacks. He reads defenses better than any other college QB. He can make all the throws. He stepped onto campus as a high school senior and started directing upperclassmen five years his senior. Against Notre Dame (and in the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma) Fromm proved he can run the ball. The ESPN College GameDay crew knows about Fromm. But evidently ESPN Draft Experts don't. First round draft pick? Jake could be the number one overall draft pick.

 

Funny that last year the media loved Tua and forgot all about Jalen Hurts. Now Hurts is back in the spotlight. If Fromm were to choose to skip his senior year for the NFL Draft (you heard it here first - he won't) the Dawgs will take a step back toward the pack. Forget Bama - beating Florida and Auburn will be harder.

 

UGA kicker Rodrigo Blankenship is on the Lou Groza Award Watch List, along with half the other kickers in the country. On November 7 the award committee narrows the list down. Last year Rodrigo made the fist cut but was not one of the three finalists, despite having a far superior Total Kicking score, which combines field goals, extra points, and kickoffs. Two of last year's finalists didn't even handle kickoffs for their teams. This week Blankenship was named one of the Groza Award's stars of the week, as well as SEC special teams player of the week. After four games the senior is perfect for the season, and has never missed a point after.

 

The Groza Award is voted on by a panel of over 300 "experts" – sportswriters, muckety-mucks, NFL kickers, and the like. You'd think they'd award the best statistical kicker, but that's not the case. A voter can vote for any kicker he wants.

 

I need to start using that CPAP machine. Ceil is leaving town Thursday so that will be a good time to start. I downloaded that app to monitor my sleep, but it thinks I'm awake whenever Barney starts moving around in the bed. So my sleep should be better when Barney leaves town with Ceil.

 

Other people are meeting here so there were leftover sandwiches that I ate for supper last night and lunch today. Also potato salad. Worked past six. Could've gone longer. Stopped by Dollar Tree on the way home for Kool-Ade. C was at her ministry. Anna got home from work. I crashed on the couch. Had the Braves on the TV.

UGA / Notre Dame Notes

Rodrigo Blankenship was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. Not the first time this year. He's still perfect for the year on both field goals and extra points. A shoo-in for the Lou Groza Award? We shall see.

 

Was Notre Dame faking injuries to slow UGA down? I didn’t see any ND defenders flopping when UGA wasn’t running the hurry up offense. Yes the UGA play calling could’ve been better. UGA offensive coordinator is in his first year of calling plays. Fromm was excellent, completing 20 of 26 with at least two throwaways.

 

Amazing stat: Notre Dame ran 34 more plays than UGA, and UGA still outgained ND. This shows how much better UGA performed than the Irish.

Clemson plays nobodies all year long. Not their fault, that’s just how the ACC is. They’re playing two SEC teams. GT lost to The Citadel. Texas A&M is overrated. Syracuse lost to Maryland. UNC Charlotte scored 40 points in each of their first three games but was still a patsy. UNC lost to App State. FSU is 1-3. Louisville has a QB that can’t pass. Boston College is a home game for Clemson. NC State will be the toughest test the rest of the way. South Carolina lost to NC and Mizzou. Miami isn’t too good either.

 

Bama has to play LSU and Auburn. Not sure Auburn as is good as everyone thinks but LSU sure is. I just don’t like how the media glorifies all these QBs for throwing for all these TD’s against such lowly competition. Ohio State has an easy schedule as well, with Michigan being so bad. Do they play Wisconsin?

 

When someone asks me a question I try to never answer “it’s easy.” It may be easy to the person who was asked, who has the knowledge. If it were so easy the person asking the question would’ve figured it out for themselves, and wouldn’t have to ask. Not everyone has the same gifts. Answering “It’s easy!” is like telling the person “You’re stupid if you don’t pick this up immediately.”

 

Friday I was asked to help on something outside my jurisdiction. I was already covered up with my own work, and three of six team members were out. But I tried to help as best I could. Tried to teach to fish instead of feeding a fish. Instead I got this replay: “Can you offer any “helpful” advise?”

 

Last Tuesday I went to the Braves game. Walked my usual 1.5 miles uphill from my parking space. Was wearing my black leather Jack Purcell Converse All-Stars – not the best walking shoes. Standing in line for 2 hours before the game, I realized I had a blister on my left foot. Did more walking than usual before and during the game, then had to walk the 1.5 miles back to my car. 

 

The next day I went to the game again. Same long walks. Walking to and from Wednesday’s Braves games only made my foot blister worse. Didn’t know it until halfway through the game, but Will was there with Joel, Charles, and David Norman. Also former basketball teammates DJ and Josiah. I sat with them the second half of the game. In the same section was former Braves Mark Wohlers and Gerald Perry and Perry’s son – who’d played basketball with Will and his five friends.

 

By the time I’d gotten home the blister had burst. My foot was beginning to swell. Wore Crocs to work Thursday and Friday. The swelling would go down when I slept. Friday night the swelling was bad. Called Will. Saturday and Sunday I stayed off my feet, kept my foot elevated, and wore compression socks. Not as mush swelling.

 

Monday: wore sneakers and not limping as bad. Foot did better. No swelling or bleeding. Wore two pair of knee high compression socks. Pretty much walked normally. Same setup Tuesday.  

 

Worked like a dog. Been trying to not work overtime but I’m behind on my work. One coworker has been out of the office several days so I get hit with all the questions from people. Got one project from my boss and another from the GM. Another coworker usually helps but she’s got a mountain of work catching up on a new system the customer installed. Lunch meetings coming up on Thursday and Friday which takes away from normal work, then month end next Monday.

Worked until 6:45. Ceil fixed black beans and rice. Matthew made tacos and ate with us. Cleaned up the kitchen. Watched The Neighborhood then Ceil put on The Voice. I was playing on my laptop. Anna was still in Athens. Last week she and Christian took a day trip to Savannah.

 

Went to King+Duke for our anniversary, then the next night ate hot dogs at Costco. Ceil got a Mtn Dew. Ate at Cheeseburger Bobby’s last Wednesday for national cheeseburger day.

 

After work Thursday I drove to downtown Woodstock. Sold some bobbleheads to a guy: young Tommy Lasorda, Sandy Koufax, Don Sutton, Babe Ruth, Blooper, Rick Monday, Eddie Mathews, Orel Hershieser, Walter Banks. Ceil had been helping with W&MC’s move, so I stopped by Taco Bell. C made it home before me. Was glad to get off my sore foot, which was swollen. Packaged a Hank Aaron bobble. Sold a third pair of shoes.

 

Wrote a retirement speech. Delivered it on Friday. Small group at five on Friday. Took it easy this weekend.

W&MC have moved most of his stuff into their house. Above: view from the back door past fridge & range on left to the barn door hiding the laundry room. Their last night in the apartment was Monday. I told Will about my nice new mower.

 

Did you see Dennison’s post about the UVA basketball coach, a Christian, turning down a raise to fund needed programs? Wonder what the Freedom From Religion Foundation thinks about that?

 

Speaking of ships, did you hear about the huge container ship that rolled over in the port of St. Simons GA, blocking the port? I think the ship was carrying a load of cars, which I suppose were lost. 400 cars or 4000, not sure. They had to rescue crew members. Saw a photo from this weekend so I suppose the ship is still sitting there. They may be dismantling it.

 

I recently read another story of a “ghost ship” that was discovered floating empty off the coast in the South China Sea, a huge super container ship. Last anyone had records of the ship was over 9 years ago. A tug boat tried to tow the ship to a dismantling facility but may have lost the connection in rough seas. Lucky no one ran into the ship at night, but I suppose other ships have radar and stuff.

2019 NL East Champions

Before the season none of the MLB Network "experts"

picked the Braves to make the playoffs.

To be fair Ken Rosenthal did pick the Braves to win the division.

Friday night the Braves clinched the title, and celebrated after the game:

first on the field, then in the clubhouse, then going back out on the field
and continuing the tradition of taking a dip in Chattahoochee Falls,
the pool in centerfield.

Dallas Keuchel did the breast stroke.

During the game Charlie Culbertson was presented a get well card
from the kids at Children's Healthcare.

After Sunday's game the Braves boarded the bus to the airport

wearing matching red track suits. Supposedly Dallas Keuchel had something to do with the wardrobe selection.

Week 4: Dawgs On Top

Many expected the game to be all Georgia. Concerning the Georgia defense spent so much of the first quarter on the field. CBS came fire for using their only prime time SEC game to showcase Notre Dame, instead of two SEC teams. Gary Danielson went out of his way to introduce SEC fans to the Fighting Irish. As usual, the Bulldog offense started slow. The punt coverage team left much to be desired.

On a UGA drive CBS caught Notre Dame red-handed, faking an injury to slow the Dawgs down. Instead of a touchdown Georgia had to settle for a field goal. They might've done it again at the end of the third quarter. Right in front of a referee, but he didn't call it.

The record crowd provided for perhaps the best home field advantage in all of college football. Better than Clemson and maybe even LSU. The red light addition made the end of the third quarter even better.

UGA hosted ESPN's College Gameday in the Myers Quad, adjacent to Will's former dorm - the H shaped building at the top. Lee Corso picked the Dawgs - as did all the others.

The Dawgs moved the ball on the ground and through the air. They just didn't have the ball that much. Fromm was 20-26, throwing tough passes downfield. At least two of his incompletions were throwaways. 

When playing an overmatched opponent, elite teams can pull off the restraints and go for the jugular. Clemson threw a bomb early. On the play before the ball was clearly rolling far away from the scrum long before the whistle. Charlotte picked it up and was headed for the end zone, only to have the officials inexplicably blow the play dead. On the long interception return for a touchdown a big Clemson lineman clearly pushed the Charlotte 49er in front of him in the back.

Florida looked good, but they were playing Tennessee. Looked like several Vols were laying down and quitting again. Shanked punts. Fumbles. Poor techniques. Tennessee has to play UGA and Bama in the next three weeks. Steve Spurrier made another appearance in The Swamp, hobbling onto the field to honor one of his championship teams. Kirk and Desmond thought Tennessee would rally in the rivalry game, but they was wrong. The Vols didn't even know how to answer a phone.

Michigan didn't put up much of a fight in Wisconsin. Harbaugh is starting to look like Jack Nicholson. ESPN College Gameday sure quick to jump all over RB Jonathan Taylor's hot yoga hobby, and the team's zen mindful meditation classes. It was mentioned Taylor was tracking toward Herschel's record, and noted the Badger is 5th all-time in yards per game. Not mentioned: Herschel is one of the four ahead of him.

Bama played another weak opponent, Southern Miss. Tua padded his stats, but threw an interception. Next up: mighty Ole Miss, who lost to Cal at home.

LSU scored 66 but let Vandy score 38. Probably played lots of subs. LSU had a huge lead, then blocked a Vandy punt for a TD. Might've saved that play for later. QB Joe Burrow tossed six TD passes. Forget Tua and Jalen and Jonathan Taylor. Burrow leads the Heisman race. The LSU/Bama game will be huge. The Tigers might just take that one. You heard it heard first.

Georgia Tech draws more fans than FSU these days. Fourth and short and they run a slow developing handoff out of the shotgun. Louisville had time to penetrate and stuff the play. Poor quarterbacking by both teams, though FSU pulled Blackman early. Noles were daring the Cards to pass, but Cunningham couldn't spot a receiver if he was wide open.

Everyone picked UCF but Pitt took an early lead, lost it, then came back with a dagger to the heart in the last minute.

Jacob Eason completed 9 of his first ten passes against BYU.

Auburn looked better than Texas A&M on the road in College Station. Kellen Mond, the self-proclaimed "best QB in the SEC" failed once against to generate much offense. Every time he came off the field head coach Jimbo Fisher yelled at him. More poor fundamentals by the Aggies: fumbles, etc. 

South Carolina lost again, this time to Missouri in Columbia. They're talking about what a passer Kelly Bryant is after last week's 400 yard passing game. We'll see how he does against some decent competition.

SC lost to NC. This week NC lost to App State. Does GT have a chance against NC? Probably not.

During ESPN College Gameday Kirk mentioned that after Herschel, one of UGA's greatest-ever players was the only other three-time All America besides Herschel: David Pollock.

Will's former baseball teammate Clay Cooney just got engaged, to Andy Stanley's daughter Allie. At the age of twelve, Clay and Will were the youngest to ever move up and play 13U Pony baseball at Mt. Paran. Clay is on staff at a North Point satellite, Woodstock City Church.
