New York to Chicago

The rookie who Babe Ruth replaced in the Yankee lineup had only batted .091 in 12 games before hurting his hip sliding into third base. The rookie had been the captain of the Illinois basketball team, and an All-American end and halfback at Illinois. When the rookie's baseball career ended, he joined the fledgling Decatur Staleys football team as player/coach/trainer/ticket-seller/pitchman. The rookie represented the Staleys for the organizational meeting that formed what would become the National Football League. The Staleys later moved from Decatur to Chicago. The rookie's name: George "Papa Bear" Halas.

Wednesday I was on the road from 6:30 am until after 9:30 pm. Left early to get through downtown before rush hour set in, though traffic slowed to a stop down in Stockbridge. Grabbed a Hardees biscuit and free RaceTrac drink on Jodeco Road. Got to Macon and, expecting a busy and late afternoon/evening, gassed up and caught up on some work.

Drove my dad down to his appointment downtown. Stopped by Burger King on the way back. Spent the afternoon showing my dad how to work his new stick-on heart monitor (basically keeping the battery charged). My mom's friend stopped by to see if she could help. I raked off the driveway and front yard.

Later I met an old high school friend at Mellow Mushroom. He's been in the marching band, with many of my friends. We had a great time catching up and remembering the old days. He's a great listener and question-asker, and like Forest Gump I chattered on like a monkey. I would say he's a nice guy, but wouldn't want to stick him with that lapel. Next time we hope to invite more old friends.

The Cookout milkshake of the month is Heath Bar, but I missed my chance yesterday. It was already late and I would've had to backtrack, and would've delayed by return by 20 minutes or more.

Due to my travels I missed the entire inauguration. Heard Garth Brooks had those in attendance join him in singing the hymn Amazing Grace. That must've been something.

From Denison: 88% of the new US Congress identifies as Christian. Only 65% of American adults identify as Christian. Biden swore an oath to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. " (ME: I assume the new Vice-President swore the same oath, as well as all members of Congress).

Thought: reading so many political tweets and posts on Facebook, it's clear the Golden Rule has been long gone out of practice. In Matthew 7:12 Jesus said: "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."

Our Norcross office had an all-time record sales day yesterday. Well over $600,000.00 in sales, with a record 27 truckloads out for delivery. Plus the previous two days had been well above average as well, with over $500,000.00 in sales each day. If we can get all the metal we have on order to come in, we could have a record year (if the country doesn't get shut down). This year our focus is on selling steel bar, so our 2021 sales slogan is "Belly Up to the Bar." Last year the slogan was "Unleash the Beast". Boy that sure backfired. Actually, considering the pandemic, 2020 wasn't that bad of a year for our company.

Article: Rick Barry set records with his distinctive underhand style of free throw shooting, but his sons Jon and Scooter shot overhand like most everyone else. Barry's younger son Canyon set records at Florida and The College of Charleston, shooting underhand.

CLAYTON KERSHAW  [B-R Bio] is the active leader in pitching won-lost percentage. Career 175-76 = .697 W-L %. He and his high school catcher were once the highest paid athletes in their sports. Kershaw and Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford were classmates at Highland Park High School in Dallas Texas. In 2017, Stafford was the highest paid player in the NFL as was Kershaw in MLB.  [Game face] His career WHIP is fourth best all-time. Career WHIP of 1.003 trails only Addie Joss, Ed Walsh, and Mariano Rivera.

1 Corinthians 1:10: "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment"
