R.I.P. Ray Guy

Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy passed away this week. He was 72. Revolutionized the punting game. Quite an athlete. Made an amazing catch of a high snap in the Super Bowl, and got the punt off – saving disaster for the Raiders. Also kicked off for the Raiders, in an era when punters rarely did double duty. His accomplishments are many.

Born in tiny Swainsboro GA, Guy attended Thomson High. Averaged 49.7 yards per punt. Kicked. Also played QB, safety, LB, and tailback. Won the state championship. The next day he scored 39 points in a basketball game. Pitched a 15 inning shutout in the state playoffs. Ran track.

At Southern Miss he kicked a school record 61 yard field goal in the snow at Utah. At the time only seven college kickers had kicked one longer. He boomed a school record 93 yard punt against Alabama, perhaps the third longest in college history at the time. Guy had a school record 44.7 yard career average, and intercepted a school record 8 passes his senior season. Guy was named MVP of the 1972 College All Star Game.

Guy was the first punter to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft, the first and only punter elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. When the Pro Bowl was held in the New Orleans Superdome, Guy hit the huge gondola strung high over the field with a punt. Guy was the Raiders emergency QB as well.

UGA dominated #1 Tennessee today. QB Stetson Bennett had his Heisman moment, accounting for all three of Georgia's touchdowns: two TD passes and a key 13 yard scamble to the pylon for a rushing TD.
The Dawg defense shut down the Heisman hopes of UT QB Hendon Hooker, ending his string of consecutive games with a TD pass. The Dawgs wore a patch in honor of Vince Dooley.
GT trailed Virginia Tech 20-13 at the half, then outscored the Hokies 15-7 in the second half for the one point victory. Former third string QB Zack Pyron accounted for 319 yards of offense in his first start. Gavin Stewart made all three of his field goals, which was the difference in the game. Stewart is a perfect 12-12 for the year.

Not sure if I read where more people are dying now than in previous years. Sure seems that way. Not just from covid, but here in 2022. Deaths up from 2,810,988 in 2017 to 3,447,405 last year. Might start noting all the deaths I’m hearing about. Guy at work’s wife passed away just last week. Former Redskins lineman Dave Butz. Tracy Taylor's friend.

NOLAN ARENADO [B-R Bio] was the first NL third baseman to win a Gold Glove Award in his rookie season. From 2013 – 2022 and counting. Arenado’s streak of GGs in each of his 10 seasons in the majors tied Ichiro Suzuki (2001-2010) for the longest by a player at any position to start a career. No one has won more Platinum Glove awards, in every season from 2017-2021 and is again a candidate in 2022. Yadier Molina won four. Adrian Beltre, Alex Gordon & Matt Chapman have each won two. When it comes to baseball defense, he really is the Only Nolan. In 2020, his hometown, Lake Forest, California, named a street after him. It’s called “Nolan Arenado Drive” and goes into Lake Forest Sports Park.

I may be late to the party, but here’s the Halloween costume meme generator Still too complicated for me to produce a professional-looking costume.

Winnie saw Uga taking a nap in his doghouse, so she figured she'd do the same.
