Sports Illustrated published an interesting ranking of MLB players recently, which I shall reproduce here. As expected, Mike Trout tops the list. This was a good exercise for me, as I know so few players from other teams.
$330 million man Bryce Harper is ranked 19th. Phans phorget his injures and slumps. Unlike #1 Mike Trout, who quietly racks up huge numbers every year.
Third ranked Max Scherzer is a modern day Greg Maddux, though the Nats' ace will fall far short of Doggie's career marks. Clayton Kershaw (#27) is starting to look human. Red Sox ace David Price ranked only 94th. Braves fans want GM AA to open the bank for the two free agent pitchers on the list: starter Dallas Keuchel (#84) and closer Craig Kimbrel (#81).
Folty and Ozzie make the all-star team but not the top hundred. Of course, both have their demons: Folty the base on balls, Ozzie the high heat.
Here Freddie Freeman (#19 is ranked behind Cardinal first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (#16), though the MLB Network ranked Freddie tops at the position.
SI loves them some Yankees – eight made the list.

I’ve been bashing Sports Illustrated lately, and deservedly so. Ever since they went from a weekly publication to only twice monthly, SI has morphed from covering specific events to publishing longer, more in depth articles. This can be good, but SI has deigned to view themselves as the liberal social conscious of sport. Serena Williams can throw an on-court hissy fit after falling behind in the US Open final, and SI labels it a courageous protest of equality for women’s tennis officiating. Interesting timing.
I've been a loyal subscriber for almost forty years, but I'm wondering if its time to let my subscription lapse.
