Flyover

Lots of people went outside today to see the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels pass over Atlanta this afternoon. I borrowed several photos off social media. Nancy Shippen had a great view from her house in East Atlanta (above).

One of the Blue Angels grew up in Sandy Springs,

earning his pilot's license while still at Riverwood High School.

His parents watched from a Georgia 400 overpass. 

The jets approached Atlanta from the northwest and crossed 285 near Truist Park. Down by the Brookwood Interchange they banked left, turning back to the north. At Roswell (near us) the jets banked right, back south to downtown, where they circled twice before headed southwest, over the airport.

During the flyover we were inside on a Zoom call with a missionary couple. At precisely 1:40 pm I heard the jets roaring past.

Mike Shetler was positioned at Cumberland Mall. His view looking north up Cobb Parkway toward Kennesaw Mountain, with the Gallaria entrance on the right, the pedestrian bridge in the foreground blocking out 285. The skyscraper under construction is already the tallest building in Cobb County, being built at the western edge of The Battery, just a hundred yards from the Braves stadium.

Never knew Deacon Jones kicked an extra point late in his career, playing for the Washington Redskins. Late in the game the Redskins scored to extend their lead to 41 points, and Deacon's PAT made the final 42-0.

Current Braves skipper Brian Snitker was managing the Durham Bulls when the movie Bull Durham was being filmed. During the shoot he was a technical advisor for the baseball scenes. In addition to his baseball card being in the movie, lead actor Kevin Cosner used Snitker's catcher's mitt for his scenes behind the plate.

Fun fact: until 1954 baseball players left their mitts out in the field when they came in to bat.
