Grant Field: Diamond or Dump?

Georgia Tech is installing the latest version of artificial turf at Grant Field. The only thing many Tech fans can think of is the old thin carpet over asphalt that the original astroturf used to be. But who woudda thunk that field turf has come a long way in the past 55 years. Should be faster and safer than even real grass. Now Tech can practice in the stadium, let students use the field, and hold more large events at Bobby Dodd. The change is certainly not unprecedented, as Grant Field had two or three versions of artificial turf between 1971 and 1994. As a student is sure was fun to play out on Grant Field, run on the track or kick field goals – whenever I wanted. The gates were always open.

Some ask why this is needed when they have artificial turf on the "gleaming new showcase" indoor practice facility. Some call it one of the finest in the nation, when in fact it's not even 80 yards long, serviceable but hardly elite. Like all other media, don't believe everything you read (except Grind City).

Speaking of Grant Field, while the expanded north stands provide "breathtaking" views of downtown Atlanta (especially at night), the way they were so unsymmetrically built is a tremendous stain on an otherwise decent looking old school stadium. What were they thinking? Of course as is most often the case, the answer is money. To hell with aesthetics. Cram in as many seats as possible to sell when Clemson and Georgia come to town. Oh, but now those games will be played down the road at Mercedes Benz. So Tech is stuck with an ugly facility.
Worked from home on Monday. C went to her women's ministry. It was just her and another volunteer, but lately the Table on Delk has been overrun with women needing help. Monday was especially crazy. M worked at the farm. He's going to get a good tan. Brought home more carrots and kale, which we had for dinner with black beans and rice. M says he's going to make carrot cake. Forget what happened after supper. I think we had on the TV. Didn't even play on my laptop.
Tuesday: not the greatest for me but I did complete a fun project, making up a long list of the top NFL players by school, from Akron to Youngstown State, with dozens and dozens of schools in between. Starting to post links to my blog posts on Twitter so 20 people will read them instead of the usual ten.

Worked in the office. Was raining on the way home. Pouring. Dropped off my ballot at the polls then drove to Pappasitos to pick up dinner – chicken fajitas to go. I'd rather eat in the restaurant but not last night. Drove home and ate. Lots of leftovers. Hardly turned the TV on. M got Mexican takeout from a different place.

Back in the office today then work from home Thursday and Friday. Ceil gets her hair cut today, and M is back at the farm. Two GMs at work aren't getting their hair cut until their VP boss says something. Neither's hair looks bad.

R.I.P. Claudell Washington. After playing for the Cubs early in his career, when he returned as a visiting player fans in the right field bleachers unfurled a banner reading WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE.
I know every time I open my mouth I'm pretty much saying the wrong thing. What's going on is pure anarchy. An attack on the United States of America. So many people are collecting larger than normal pandemic unemployment checks from the government. Wonder how many of them are out protesting and rioting against that same entity?  Biting the hand that feeds them. Saw where protesters broke into Seattle City Hall, wanting their progressive mayor cast out of office because they won't defund the police. The cry is do EVERYTHING they say, but that still may not be enough.

Something a friend said rang true with me, how expressing a belief like being a Christian will offend some people, and will be considered "wrong". I know what they mean. Seems like these days even if you were to agree with the entire program, bow down, apologize, and agree to a new course of action – you are still wrong for being white and being wrong in the first place. Is that what our country is about? This whole thing is getting me down. Torn between wanting to stay away from news versus pondering it more. Guess that's how black people feel pretty much all the time.

These things dovetail in this article, explaining how some of the "woke" people calling for social justice exhibit the same dynamics as a cult. Guess I'm starting to turn into Bruce Ambrose.
Been thinking about ordering a cheap pair of NBA basketball shorts from DH Gate. Hawks red or Grizzlies navy (love their colors). But yesterday I saw an old guy walking in the neighborhood with a long pair of shorts and it really wasn't a good look on him. Long delivery due to Covid.

NOLAN RYAN [SABR Bio] is the all-time career leader in fewest hits allowed per nine innings pitched.- H/9 IP = 6.5553. He is also the all-time single-season leader in the same category when in 1972 his H/9 was 5.2606. He received a highest Hall of Fame voting percentage in the twentieth century except for that of an old teammate. Elected to the Hall in 1999 w/ 98.79% of the HOF vote. At the time, only Tom Seaver's 98.84% was higher. They had been teammates on the Mets 1968-71. He was the first player to suit up for all four of the original expansion franchises. In fact, those were the only ones he suited up for.

Young coworker Josh has been getting bullied for the driving shoes he wears, so today in solidarity I wore mine. Probably 15 years old. Wore ribbed socks to complete the look.
