This Day In Baseball History

Thirty-four years ago this past Wednesday, back in 1991, the Braves won the first World Series game played in the Deep South, beating the Twins in extra innings. The game set a World Series record for most players from both teams appearing in the game. Ceil and I sat in the club level out in left field. I had won the tickets by calling into a radio show.

Winning the tickets qualified me for the grand prize drawing, a trip to Los Angeles for the debut of MC Hammer's "Too Legit to Quit" video. I had just wanted the World Series tickets. When they announced on the radio at 8 am on Monday that I had won, my boss Steve Apollo happened to be listening. I was already at my desk, ready in case the station called me as the winner.

The next weekend Ceil and I flew out to LA. We got tickets to Universal Studios, and rented a car and drove all around Los Angeles, and even down to Anaheim. We skipped the video release party, but in hindsight should've gone.

Wednesday 50 years ago Carlton Fisk waved his dramatic walk off home run fair, to beat the Big Red Machine. I have the bobblehead. I think.

Watched Bryson and Steph Curry shoot 49 for 18 holes at the Lake Merced golf course in San Francisco. The pair only needed ten strokes on the first five holes. Curry was hitting it close and putting well. He drove the green on at least one par four. Bryson chipped in from 35 feet away.

Watch any of the NBA games? The Hawks lost their opener. Tuesday night the NBC NBA pregame show was on Channel 11 Alive instead of Jeopardy. Ceil cooked Mexican food.

SANDY KOUFAX [SABR Bio] was the first National League pitcher in the Modern Era to strike out more than 300 batters in a season. In 1963, Koufax struck out 306, then in 1965 struck out 382, still the most by a National Leaguer or a lefty. His teammate Don Drysdale won the Cy Young Award in 1962. Koufax won the first of his 3 in 1963. Koufax also won in 1965 & 1966, all 3 unanimous. Beginning in 1967 a Cy Young was awarded to a pitcher in each league. Koufax retired with 2,396 strikeouts in 2,324⅓ innings pitched.

Reunions: seems like I went to 2 or 3 high school reunions and they weren't the greatest. Ten years ago our football team reunion was better. Missed my 40th class reunion, but it looked like they had a good time. In December we have the 50th reunion for our football team. If there's a 50th class reunion in 2027, I guess I'll go. Ceil hasn't been back for a reunion in ages, but did meet up with her four best high school friends a couple of times. We see one of them most of the times we go back to Jefferson.

Wednesday: small group. Gym on Thursday morning. Wednesday I was eating a jelly donut and the jelly plopped out right down on my computer keyboard, and the keys are super sticky. Ugh.

Atlanta has been hit with a "cold" spell. Currently 65 with lows dipping down to the mid-40's. Won't be quite the crowd Saturday morning at Candler Park.

On Thanksgiving weekend coworkers Rachel and Angie are road-tripping to Wisconsin. Leaving Friday and returning Sunday. Sounds interesting.

Denison: is love enough?
