Today I ate lunch at El Dorado in Duluth for Rachel’s birthday, with Angie and Daniel and my boss Eric. Not much deep conversation but it was good to spend some time with him. Good food. Regular Mexican. Daniel and Eric thought the shredded chicken was bland. Lots of stuff on the menu to try. Lots of food for the price. Plenty of customers.
I like to go out to eat on the early side. Hate it when it gets late and so crowded, and I get home like 930. But I know Taqueria gets crowded right when they open. Ceil is always up for Taqueria.
Yesterday C drove down to pick up the girlies from school and feed them supper. C didn’t get home until 830. I stuck around the office until 545 to let traffic clear out. Grabbed a free small Frosty from Wendys. Watched The Weakest Link, the last two episodes of Only Murders In The Building season 5 (the mayor did it), and some of the Jets@Patriots.
Made it to the gym this morning. As usual there are cakes, cookies, and donuts at work.
My last official day at Ryerson will be January 23rd. I’ve always enjoyed working in the office surrounded by coworkers, hearing differing viewpoints, working together on projects, and shooting the breeze around the watercooler. Many coworkers have been fun to be around, others not so much. Some have been inspirations to observe - due to their work ethic, problem solving abilities, or sense of humor. Being around others all day has always kept me in check, not letting my opinions go untested.
One of the reasons I’m leaving is due to the complexity of the SAP computer system we went on two years ago. So much extra work. I’ve learned the system, but resolving some of the issues is just so complicated. We make thousands and thousands of hundreds of different parts from a million pounds a month, and everything has to match down to the piece. At this stage of my life it’s just too much banging my head against the wall. That’s sad, because our customer has slowed down considerably, making for more time to do all the extra work required by SAP.
While I’m glad I took on the challenge of learning and converting over to SAP, it’s clear that after 38 years it’s time to move on. I’m pretty much the oldest and longest tenured office employee. Younger coworkers draw me in to their circles, but its clear they’re of a different generation. Nice that they plan on having a farewell dinner for me.
What’s next? I have three or four moneymaking ventures I plan on pursuing on a more fulltime basis, things I’m interested in but haven’t had time to develop. If the right opportunity comes along, it would be fun to work for the Braves at Truist Park. I have so many things that I need to do, it will be hard to fit them all in. I will have more time to plan, and to more properly handle things like finances and expenses on a more timely basis. There are some things that need to be addressed that I’ve put off for months and years.
Denison: why are the enhanced Obamacare subsidies so controversial?
Finished “Gwyneth: The Autobiography” by Amy Odell. Daughter of actress Blythe Danner. It’s usually kinda wild and interesting to see how these uber-celebrities live their lives. Didn’t know that through her lifestyle company Goop, Paltrow has spread much inaccurate information about personal health. Grisham’s Camino Ghosts was real good. Next year I won’t be able to listen to as many audiobooks. I will need to make an effort to actually read, perhaps at night during TV time, instead of scrolling on my phone.
The US stopped making pennies. Over the past few years I have come in to a bunch of pennies. I’d always save the rare wheat penny I’d come across, or a penny that had an oddity. For a while M was into collecting smashed pennies, so I still have those. When M moved out he left a huge jug of pennies, with quarters, dimes, and nickels mixed in. I slowly worked that down. Evert week I’d make a cash purchase or two, and always pay one of the dollars with coins, including ten pennies. The cashier would see me walk in and exclaim “Pennies!” If I ever made the purchase without pennies, he’d say “You’re a good man!” Several months ago when the President suggested the production of pennies be discontinued, I stopped paying with pennies. Maybe my stash will become even more valuable.
