Mtn Dew & Frozen Pizza

Thursday I worked past 6:30. Might’ve been seven. Cleaned out both cars, and loaded a large punching bag.

Drove to Augusta Friday morning. Traffic wasn’t bad. Stopped at Bojangles for a bacon egg and cheese biscuit. Lunch meeting at customer was Panera Bread, a turkey sandwich. Stopped by to see W&MC, then drove over to the nice ballpark: Lake Olmstead Stadium. Found a foul ball I while I was walking around. Chatted with one bobblehead guy and his parents before gates opened, then two more once we got inside. A thunderstorm rolled in and rained out the game. I had to leave anyway.

Drove to Athens with part of Anna’s bed, and we put it together. Got back home just before midnight.

Saturday we cleaned out M’s old bedroom. Even ripped out the carpet. Took most of the day. The old bedroom has a high shelf running all the way around it. C wanted to tear it down, but it’s a great place to put things to display. Like bobbleheads. I also did some laundry and straightened out room as well.

Saturday night we went to the Mellow Mushroom in Roswell near Claire. Much faster than the Lassiter location. They say us at this weird wood and rock table under a stained glass window. Our chairs were two huge throne-like things. Got home in time for Ceil’s Hallmark Channel movie.  

I only drink soft drinks when I go out to eat, but Friday since I was driving all day I drank two large Mountain Dews. Had one left over that I drank on Saturday, plus a Coke Zero at Mellow Mushroom. Slept good on Friday night but couldn’t sleep for nothing on Saturday night. Got up in the middle of the night and went downstairs to read. That never happens. I’ve also dramatically cut down on my frozen pizza consumption. When I was a freshman at Tech I ate cheap frozen pizza every night. Better quality than the cheap frozen pizza of today.

JFBC on Sunday, and Moe’s afterwards for lunch. Took the CRV to the carwash to get the emissions tested, then back home for the rest of the Braves game. Read Grisham, played on my laptop, and did more laundry. C rented the movie “Gifted” which was good. Grits and eggs for supper, though I’d snacked on chips and dip.
 

Lunch meeting today: Atlanta Bread Company.

What we need to do is the next time a dental hygienist harasses you, we’ll go down and heckle them. There was a Seinfeld episode where a lady heckled Jerry on stage, so he went over to her office and heckled her at work. “Do you call that typing?” You’d better go faster!”

Saturday W&MC drove to Rhode Island. Yesterday they went to the game at Fenway. He said it was great. Today they drove to Maine. Tomorrow they hike a trail called “Knife’s Edge.” They drive back through NYC at the end of the week.

 

Oft-mentioned longtime coworker Dialysis, who was laid off in January, passed away early Saturday morning. He’d been in real bad health, and had needed a kidney transplant. He was 56. He hadn’t worked since January, so it was good he got to spend his last few months at home. His youngest son is 23 years old.

Ga State Football Stadium

Photos are starting to filter out of the alterations Georgia State is completing, turning Turner Field into their new football stadium.

Dugouts were removed and a new grandstand erected in right field,

with four light stanchions behind.

The Braves old 755 Club, renamed The University Club, fits perfectly above the north end zone stands, offering a great view of the field.
It will be used for entertaining and recruiting.

Both the stadium and the field will be renamed

once Georgia State sells the naming rights to sponsors.

Georgia State holds a scrimmage in the new stadium on Thursday August 17. The Corky Kell High School Football Classic moves over from the old Georgia Dome, with two games on Friday August 18 and five more on Saturday August 19. The Panthers open the season on August 31 against Tennessee State. If the city of Atlanta can get its act together they will college parking fares for less than ten events a year, after failing to negotiate a new deal for the Braves 80 plus yearly dates.

Lake Olmstead Stadium

Found myself in Augusta yesterday, so after work and checking in with Will and Mary-Clayton I headed over to peaceful Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Considering the ballpark was built in 1995, the stadium seats fewer than all but one ballpark in the South Atlantic league - and lacks luxury boxes. Next year the team moves across the Savannah River to a brand new stadium in North Augusta. I'm glad I got to see this guy.

Got to hang out with three bobblehead addicts. I've made a few trades with Matt Campbell (left) of Charlotte. We also sat together at a UGA baseball game in Athens. Jon Stone (right) drove up from Florida, but that's nothing new for him. In the past month he has road-tripped to Myrtle Beach and Danville Virginia.

Albert Sender declined to be in the photo. He and his elderly parents were among the few early birds, so we had a nice long chat before the gates opened at six. Less than one hundred fans were there then, so it was easy to get four of these cute mascot bobbles. Already sold two, making back my money more than twice over.

A thunderstorm washed out the game, so perhaps Will can use my rainchecks to get Jon Lester bobbles later this month.

Had to dash through the rain back to my car.

Got plenty wet. Left at 7:20 for Athens.

30th Anniversary Speech

Thursday was my 30th anniversary at work. I was given a nice celebration. I was asked to detail the various positions I'd held over the years, so I didn't give this speech I had written, so I'm posting it here:

This is the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. That was a line from MASH That was a popular TV show back when I started here (just kidding). Thanks for putting up with me all these years, and the jokes I keep telling over and over again.

I'm not sure that I set out to work 30 years for the same company. Perhaps I made it in spite of myself. You'd think at some point I's learn what the fastpath is for that aluminum tread plate stuff EZGo orders three times a year. Now whenever I stick my head around the corner everyone in 01 sales says what, Ashley? 3003TP.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Please don't call me the Work Order Guru. You can call me Mister Work Order Guru. I think finally I have figured out who I am. I try to be myself, no matter how many times people try to change me.

It's interesting that when a long-timer's anniversary is celebrated, the poor person giving the introduction usually hasn't been around long enough to really do justice to all the great things the employee has done in their career. Eric did a good job letting me do that. We really don't have the time. I know you'd rather hear this hilarious speech instead. Besides, many of my accomplishments are listed in plain view all around the office. They've been there so long that people don't look at them anymore. Like the magnets all lined up neatly in a row on the bulletin boards.

In my mind I don't talk that much. That's why I wrote this speech in advance. I can't come up with such flowery nonsense off the top of my head. That's why I'm not in outside sales. Still I enjoy being around good people. It's fun to listen, but the older I get the harder it is for me to hear.

When I first started here people would celebrate their anniversaries and I'd think how they had started working here when I was in high school. Like Tarquinio. And we graduated the same year. These days with all you young people around I'm afraid to ask when you graduated. When I started working here Paul McCartney was still in a band. It was called Wings.

I remember when Eric was a young outside sales stud, jumping in frozen lakes in January every time he got a big order. Some people haven't changed much. In my mind Garrett hasn't changed a bit. Fifteen years ago I was teaching Danny and Melanie about Work Orders. Now they're teaching everyone else. Shane always worked somewhere else. Fortunately I keep getting transferred out of Born's department. Eric, you know Sandra has a nickname. If you don't know Sandra, well, good for you. Chris O'Leary…no, I better not read that.

All those "special guests" Eric brings in to the sales meetings? I've known them for years. Grogan and Nicol and I were in a fantasy football league before the internet. Before excel. We had to crunch the numbers on an abacus. My quarterback was Archie Manning.

For so many years my coworkers never seemed to change. Every year one or two would retire. For years we had the same hard-working bunch, slaving away. We'd come across a problem, then put our heads together to figure out a solution. I try hard to not talk about the good old days and the way things used to be. So many people have helped me along the way. Then new people would come in to replace the beloved old-timer, and we'd think they'd never be able to do as good a job. But almost always the new person would do even better. So many good employees that I look at and think: I need to be more like them. I need to work harder just to keep up.

So much has changed for the better. For years the Gold Building would only ship on one shift and receive on another. We finally figured out that things had if we wanted to grow. I know that I need to keep changing and growing to keep up. I think one of the secrets is to not worry about screwing something up. If there is a work order problem I just roll up my sleeves and try to fix it. Hopefully I've been able to help you guys out.

My advice? Listen. Stay safe. Save for retirement. Listen. Remember who the customer is, and treat them accordingly. Did I say listen?

This company has been very good to me, and I am thankful. Thanks for putting up with me all these years.

Tech: Throws Too Much

Tuesday while running errands I was listening to 680. Brian Finneran said he was getting flack from Georgia Tech for saying they were probably among the worst teams running the two minute offense. GT countered with clips of two successful 2016 drives in the last two minutes. Sorry if I'm not impressed.

In 2016 Tech passed 23% of the time. I say that's way too much for a team built to run, with a QB that's a poor passer. That's too high of a percentage to surprise anyone with the pass. Perhaps Johnson called so many pass plays in an effort to open up the run more.

Matthew Jordan is a weaker passer than Justin Thomas was. Jordan hardly threw at all against Virginia Tech, and they won. He is a bull like Nesbitt, which is fine with me. Will be interesting to see if either of the youngsters push Jordan for playing time.

An anonymous ACC coach said Tech had less talent that almost everyone else in the league (with the exception of one young running back). Paul Johnson laughed it off, saying he hadn't been interviewed for the article.

Wednesday Braves: I didn't get home until 8 pm, but I watched most of the game after that. Chip and Joe had John Hart in the booth for the inning Santana hit his home run. Was interesting to hear all he had to say, about Albies, Carmango, and the other kids. While we may consider these things a minute or two, Hart and Coppy and Schuerholz and Snitker and working on these things all day long. Short term projections. Long term projections.

Did you read Jeff Schultz's column about the Braves playing the youngsters the rest of the way? That's what they're doing. It never was about this season anyway. Schultz was talking out of both sides of his mouth, especially about Dansby. Covering his tracks. Trying to have it both ways. He said the Braves made a mistake playing Swanson so long in the bigs (but if they hadn't he would've called for them to) - but Schultz also said it's too early to give up on Dansby.

Back to Athens

Took off yesterday to move Anna back to Athens. We couldn’t leave until after her 1:15 hair appointment. In the morning we packed her Jeep and the CRV. I went to the post office, Home Depot, gas station, and Chickfila. Didn’t leave until 3 pm, so of course traffic on 285, 85, and 316 was terrible.  

Nice old house. Cool chimney. My first time inside.

Anna is in one of the four downstairs bedrooms.

There’s also a kitchen downstairs and upstairs.

Someone is planning on doing some mixing.

Washer dryer downstairs. Downstairs there are 1-1/2 baths plus another one upstairs on the main level, which also has three bedrooms, a living room, and dining room. The east side: 

There’s a cottage behind the house where other girls live. 

Anna knows the girls who live across the street in a more expensive house, but they have to share bedrooms. After they moved their daughters in, the parents relaxed on the back porch.

Also across the street is a nice new house some parents had built for their kids.

We ate at Taqueria after we unpacked, and went out to Michaels and Target. Lots of parents and students. Thursday sorority meetings begin, and next Tuesday freshman rush starts. Traffic on 85 south was backed up due to paving. Didn’t get home until ten.

 

I hate it when the dental hygienist gives me a hard time. Makes people to not want to go. As unpleasant as a dentist appointment is, you’d think they’d be doing everything possible to make things pleasant so people would keep coming back. Dental hygienists live in their own little world, and they think everyone should be like them.

Can’t believe LA has won 40 of their last 46 games. And the Braves dealt them two of those six losses. Interesting changes: M Adams to LF, calling up Albies and Sims, possibly moving Phillips to third base. Phillips was got to be better than Santana.

Both the Braves and the Dodgers were bunting last night. Braves needed one run to tie and two to win. What is the old maxim – play for the win on the road and play for a tie at home? Can’t win the game unless you tie the game first. When I have time I’ll do a quick study of where the Braves rank in sacrifice bunts. Like using relief pitchers for only one inning or less, I’d imagine every team employs the sacrifice bunt.

 

Lots of people are saying to fire the manager. Fire this guy. Fire that guy. If they fire the manager halfway through the season, how will the rest of the season go? Who will they get that is better? Every time the head guy is fired, there’s at least one full season of getting back to where the team was in the first place. I won’t talk about expectations again, but after a slow start the Braves battled back to .500 – even with Freeman, Garcia, and Kemp hurt and Bartolo and Teheran struggling. Got to give the manager a little credit.

 

Then in July the schedule got tougher. They’ve called up two rookie pitchers, plus Albies and Lane Adams. Will be good to see how they perform. I wonder if Phillips turned down a trade last week. I’m sure the Braves told him in advance that they were planning on playing Albies to see how he looks.

The Roof May Never Work

Guy I know works for the company that helped build SunTrust Park and Mercedes Benz Stadium. They’re going to build the Braves new spring training facility as well.

 

He says the “retractable” roof on Mercedes Benz Stadium may never work. Last week the Falcons had announced it would remain closed for the first month of the season. My friend had known this since last April, when they took all the big cranes out of the inside of the stadium (below) so the field could be put in, so the games could be played. Work to remove the field and seats from the Georgia Dome had to be stopped, in case the new stadium wasn’t going to be ready.

He said there were serious doubts in the construction community whether the roof will ever work. It will take tens of millions of dollars. After the Falcons season, and after the college championship game in January they’d have to move those big cranes back inside to work on the roof again. With the Mercedes name on the building, and the Super Bowl coming to town in February 2019, there are lots of people in high places who want to see that roof working. But it ain’t happening this year.

 

Aaron Judge will be ok. Everyone has their ups and downs during the dog days of the season. Plenty of time left. Few players could keep up with the pace he was on.

 

Everyone is asking (again) what’s wrong with the Braves. We knew going into the season the best they would do would be to win half their games. When they went on a hot streak I knew it would only be a matter of time before they’d cool off again.

 

I wonder if the Garcia trade took some of the wind out of the Braves sails. It was common knowledge that he was tops on their list to trade, but still it had to be a downer in the clubhouse. Carmargo is hitting great, but even though Dansby had a low average and struggled in the field (and the demotion to Gwinnett will be a good thing in the long run), Swanson was still doing lots of little things to push runs across the plate.

 

I missed that part of the game. Another reason the bunt is so bad is that no one can bunt any more. This weekend I saw one Brave (the guy they got from the Twins?) try a bunt, and he fouled it off. It was obvious he had no clue how to bunt, slapping his bat out there at the last minute instead of squaring around to make sure he could make contact.

 

Maddux and Glavine knew how to bunt. They have more sac bunts than any other right-handed and left-handed pitchers in history. But if you look at the all-time list of sacrifice bunts, there was a whole lot more bunting going on before 1950 than today. These days there are fewer bunts cause everyone is trying to hit home runs. They’d rather give up double play and try for the home run. Young fans aren’t watching baseball because there’s less action – only walks, strikeouts, and home runs.

 

So the Twins traded Garcia to the Yankees. Snitker said Johnson is no longer the primary closer. Had he pitcher better the past few weeks he probably would’ve been traded as well.

 

Busy weekend. Worked until 5:45 on Friday. W&MC beat me home. I arrived and the house was full of flowers. C and MC spent the evening arranging them. They were to be used on Saturday for MC’s sister Anna, who was being propsed to. W was studying. I went out to pick up supper: C had ordered Thai food. Not my favorite, though some was edible. Later MC’s parents dropped by to pick up all the flowers in his F150 pickup.

 

Saturday morning W&MC headed out to Tennessee for the big event. They had breakfast at some great biscuit spot they’d found, then headed up to the mountains with MC’s sister Anna. MC’s parents had gone in earlier, and had to lug the flowers almost a mile up the trail. Tom said he was sweating and huffing and puffing. At one point he fell – but didn’t drop the flowers. Zach arrived with the photographer, and helped carry the rest of the flowers. Then Tom and Regina moved the truck and signalled Will that it was ok for W&MC and Anna to go on their hike. When they neared the scenic overlook W&MC dropped back, and Zack came out of the bushes to propose to Anna. Since MC had worked so hard on the flowers, she and Will lugged them back to the car. Zack’s parents had flown in for the affair, and afterwards they all gathered in Cartersville for supper.

 

Ceil and I worked around the house Saturday morning. The place was in decent shape. I did a bunch of laundry, but constantly going outside into the heat and back inside to the cold air conditioning made me sick. By the afternoon I was sneezing uncontrollably, and couldn’t do much at all. Ceil had gone over to help out at a Refuge Coffee rummage sale, so I chilled pretty much the rest of the day. I had to dog-sit Barney and Okie, but they tired themselves out so much on Friday night that on Saturday they just sat around. While Ceil was at the YMCA I had let Okie outside, and he wound up running around the neighborhood (with me giving chase). W&MC came by about 7:30 on their way back to Augusta. On her way home C shopped at Dekalb Farmers Market.

 

I was still sick on Sunday morning, and pretty much stayed in bed until eleven. M started cleaning out his room, and I cleaned and straightened our bedroom. C cooked me an eggy-boy sandwich (without much food in the house , on Saturday I’d eaten eggs for breakfast and lunch). M had decided to move to the downstairs bedroom, and a couple of friends came over to help out. Anna arrived home from camp, and I helped her unload her car. With her stuff and Matthew’s mess and the leftover flowers, the house and garage were a total mess. Not sure when we’ll get it all cleaned up. I took Anna’s filthy Jeep to the carwash and got the emmissions tested. C cooked homemade pizza, and the four of us plus M’s two friends are a late lunch.

 

Then Anna, Ceil, and I went to an engagement party for MC’s sister in Roswell. Lot’s of MC’s family was there, who I knew well.  After the party we didn’t do much. I had leftover pizza for supper, and we all watched a movie on DVD.

 

Busy week coming up. Today is month end, which is always a busy day. Two coworkers are out. Big lunch meeting – BBQ. Tomorrow I’m taking off to move Anna to Athens. Will probably get my car tags as well.

Greatest 2-Sport Athletes 1-10

The top ten multi-sport athletes of all time. Both Athlon and I left Tony Romo off our lists. I forgot Charlie Ward and Drew Henson, as well as several others.

10. Marion Jones: Olympic athlete, UNC basketball national champion.
A much better athlete than Lolo Jones.

9. Willie Gault: all-pro wide receiver for the Bears and Raiders.
World class sprinter. Olympic bobsledder (below, with Edwin Moses and Herschel). Dabbled in ballet. A Herschel wannabe.

8. Wilt Chamberlain was considered one of the greatest volleyball players in history, and was inducted into the sport's hall of fame. He wasn't too bad in basketball either. Or track. Put up impressive totals in another sport as well.

7. Before breaking baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers,
hall of famer Jackie Robinson was a three sport star at UCLA:
track, baseball, and perhaps his best sport: football.

6. Bob Hayes: after winning the gold medal in the 100 meters,
he earned the title of World's Fastest Human. Then he earned his spot in the NFL Hall of Fame as a wide receiver for the Cowboys and 49ers.

5. Deion Sanders: perhaps the greatest cornerback in NFL history,
though he often had an aversion to tackling. Also one of the greatest return men in football history. NFL Hall of Fame. Played baseball for the Yankees, Braves, and Reds. Also ran track at FSU.

4. Bo Jackson: all-pro NFL running back. MVP of the MLB all-star game. Only player in baseball history to play with an artificial hip.
Ran track at Auburn. Leads charity bike rides across Alabama.
Handy with a bow and arrow as well.

3. Herschel Walker: gained more yards than any other football player in history. Undefeated MMA fighter. World class sprinter.
Bobsledder in the Winter Olympics. Danced in the Dallas Ballet.

2. Jim Thorpe: NFL Hall of Famer.
Won the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon. Played pro baseball.

1. Jim Brown: arguably the greatest running back in NFL history, if not the greatest player in NFL history. Also the greatest lacrosse player in history. Played basketball and baseball at Syracuse.
