Shivonne's First Game

Left work at 4:30 yesterday. Took an hour to make it over to Cumberland, where I met W&MC and Shivonne. Made it inside with plenty of time to secure the Austin Riley bobblehead. Walked around the park looking at eating options, then to our seats well before game time. I checked out the Team Store, and the starting lineup.

Good game if you were a Braves fan. Plenty of offense. Rookie starter was activated at the last minute, and pitched well until he ran out of gas. Then they brought in a reliever I’d never heard of, who’d also activated right before the game. Ozuna had a big night, with a double and two home runs – one in the RaceTrac jackpot inning.

Poor rundown mechanics by the Nationals, who allowed one runner to score and another to third by interfering with the baserunner – after making way too many throws in the rundowns. Then hilarity when catcher d’Arnauld fell down after getting hit by a 55 MPH “pitch”.

Shivonne was an angel the entire evening, looking around in wonder at all the lights and colors and noises. Someone gave her a big “My First Game” button.

She even appeared on the big matrix board, dancing with her parents between innings. Both she and her father were wearing new outfits they’d bought at the Masters.

Saw several people I knew at the game: Kevin, Haley Hurt, Chris, Richard, Norman, Darrell, and others.

Was still too sore this morning to go to the gym. Maybe tomorrow, to walk. On the way to work I stopped by RaceTrac for a free apple fritter and soft drink. Lunch with customer at The Medlock Tavern. Broke down and got a burger and fries.

JOE SEWELL  [SABR Bio] a teammate of Lou Gehrig, he moved into third place on the consecutive-games-played list while Gehrig was setting the all-time record. Sewell’s streak was 1,103 games, but he never passed Everett Scott, another Gehrig teammate whose 1,307 game streak stood as the standard until surpassed by The Iron Horse. No one in the history struck out less than Sewell, who only struck out 114 times in his 14-year MLB career (8,333 at bats). In nine seasons playing in 100+ games, his strikeout total was in single digits. He led the majors in doubles in 1924 with 24 for Cleveland, tying Harry Heilmann of Detroit.

DENISON just read John Mark Comer's book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry telling his story of learning to imitate Jesus' approach to time and the challenges of life. He quotes philosopher Dallas Willard: "Hurry is the enemy of spiritual life in our day." Comer notes Jesus lived by the spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude, Sabbath, simplicity, and "slowing," which John Ortberg defines as "cultivating patience by deliberately choosing to place ourselves in positions where we simply have to wait." Comer has organized his life around three goals: (1) slow down, (2) simplify life around the practices of Jesus, and (3) live from a center of abiding in Christ. His personal manifesto is: "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life" (1 Thes 4:11). Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, offered similar advice: "Try to keep your soul always in peace and quiet."

The Grass Is Always Greener

The Braves win the World Series and Braves fans still complaining and nit picking every little thing, five games into the season. I’m blocking people with the dumbest comments. Might go the game tonight. W&MC & Shivonne might go with me.

Nothing wrong with a good milkshake. I need to remember to cash in my Chickfila points for a milkshake. Speaking of milkshakes, in conjunction with the NCAA tournament I won a free small dessert at Andy’s Frozen Custard. Gotta get that on the way home this week, or maybe at lunch.

Several folk from EZGo are coming in this week. Might get dragged out to lunch, to the nearby Medlock Tavern. Good grub there.

All this is a lot of activity considering my back is still hurting. Its better today, as long as I don’t move much. Second straight day not wearing socks. Wearing loafers today. Not quite as comfortable as my Crocs loafers, which I wore yesterday.

Yesterday Ceil took Okie home. Winnie slept all afternoon. Winnie is so mean to Okie, but last night she cuddled up next to me on the couch.

Outlaws who have paid the price for running afoul of one of Augusta Nationals rules. Don’t let this happen to you.

I need to pray more for the challenging / burdening things that will be happening in the near future, remembering Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

WILLIE KEELER [SABR Bio] ascribed his success at the plate to “…hitting them where they ain’t”? Keeler had the highest career batting average for games all played in the 19 century, batting .381 from 1892 through 1900. He once started a 44 game hitting streak beginning on Opening Day 1897. That same season he had a streak of two or more hits in eleven consecutive games.

Masters Recap

That was a pretty good Masters to watch. If you had told me that Jon Rahm and Tiger would be paired on Sunday, you would’ve thought that would’ve really been something. With all the focus on Woods, it allowed Rahm to have a good round.  Seemed like after Tiger had played two rounds in what, one over par, he was in good shape headed into the weekend. Then he wilted to seven over after three rounds. Doubt he ever thought about quitting, and already declared he will be playing in the British Open in July. Nice to see Rory rally to finish second.

Before Scottie Scheffler turned pro he won two thirds of the tournaments he played, like 90 wins in 134 starts. That’s an amazing number. I am no expert, but it appears he has a well-rounded game, not overly flashy, just plodding along. So many holes yesterday that he didn’t birdie were almost birdies.

Yesterday at the Masters Scheffler’s wife Meredith was wearing all white Nike Dunk basketball sneakers (top). The things I notice. Justin Thomas wore bright yellow parts yesterday, but it was an outfit similar to one once worn by Arnold Palmer.

W&MC were at the Masters on Saturday and Sunday. Yesterday they were in the first row of the grandstand on the 16th hole. I have yet to get an update. Looks like Shivonne got her first peek at Magnolia Lane as well. Like Meredith, Mary-Clayton was rocking her Nikes.

Friday for lunch my boss took me to the Duluth Diner. Cobb salad with grilled chicken. Got a piece of turtle cheesecake to take home for dessert. Friday night Ceil cooked homemade pizza. M ate all the leftovers.

Interesting Saturday morning. We had an 8 am zoom call with out overseas friends. Afterward we had brunch at Reveille, a diner in East Cobb. I had a boneless chicken breast with bacon and cheese, with two fried eggs and breakfast potatoes.

As we were being seated at our table I got a text from my buddies, wanting to meet for lunch. So when we left the diner I drove straight over to Righteous Que for a BBQ sandwich with Rob, Reid and Lee. Went home and watched the Masters the rest of the afternoon.

Sunday School and worship. Got home and was loading up a basket of stuff to take downstairs. When I bent over to pick it up, by back went out. Pain. I laid out on the floor. Pulled myself up and ambled downstairs. Nothing was comfortable: sitting on the couch, at the kitchen table, standing. While watching the Masters I managed to do some laundry and take the dogs outside. Same thing happens every year or two.

Went to bed just after 8 pm. No gym this morning. Slept until 7;30 am. Not too much better this morning. Been working at the kitchen table. Good thing I didn’t buy a Braves ticket for tonight’s game. We were gonna have three no-shows for small group tonight, out of six, so we cancelled. I’ve basically been in warmups all day. Back feels a little better, as long as I don’t move.

Through Sunday the World Champion Braves had won two of their past three games. I need to be as wildly positive, thankful, and optimistic about the rest of my life as I am about the Braves.

ORLANDO CEPEDA [SABR Bio] was history’s second-ever designated hitter. Ron Blomberg was the first DH, coming up sixth in the first inning against Luis Tiant. The first batter up for Boston in the top of the second of the same game was Cepeda. Orlando’s team of eight seasons traded him away to strengthen their pitching, but Cepada won Comeback Player of the Year that year, then league MVP the next. On 08-May-1966, Cepeda was traded by SF to STL for Ray Sadecki. Cepeda was the NL MVP in 1976, becoming only the second player to win ROY & MVP unanimously, after Frank Robinson. He is the third first baseman to pull off AND be tricked by the old hidden ball trick. The other first basemen to be both hidden-ball trickster and hidden-ball trickee are Frank Chance and Fred Merkle.

Cakes For Sale

Matthew has been making more cakes as of late.

Scottie Scheffler might have played even better today had he continued taking off and putting on his vest on every hole, like he did yesterday. Tiger gritted it out through obvious pain, and says he'll play in the British Open in July.

Remind me to not wear a tie the next time someone wants to take my picture.

R.I.P. TOMMY DAVIS  [SABR Bio] was the most recent Dodger to win a batting title. He won NL BA titles in 1962 (.346) and 1963 (.326), both times also leading the majors. His career pinch-hitting batting average is the highest in major league history. With 63 hits in 197 pinch-hitting at bats, Davis ended at .320. Jackie Robinson phoned the Brooklyn born & raised Davis and persuaded him to look past offers from the Phillies & Yankees and become a Dodger. In 1962, Davis led all MLB in hits (230), RBI (153), and average, but it was the same year his teammate Maury Wills broke Ty Cobb’s record of 96 stolen bases in a year, with 104. It was the same year Willie Mays led the world with a 10.5 WAR and 49 home runs. Davis finished a strong third in the NL MVP voting. Only Sammy Sosa’s RBI totals in 1998 (158) & 2001 (160) have exceeded Davis’ 1962 number. Davis played for ten teams in his 18-year career. He homered for them all except the Royals, his last stop, where he only came to the plate 20 times. Davis hit .294 and amassed 2,121 hits. His career batting average is higher than those of Hall of Famers Billy Williams, Lou Brock, Harmon Killebrew, Tim Raines, Ton Lazzeri, Larry Doby, Eddie Murray and Carl Yastrzemski.

WALTER JOHNSON [SABR Bio] threw seven Opening-Day shutouts, in 1910, 1914, 1915, 1917, 1919, 1924 & 1926. He led his league in strikeouts twelve times, including eight in a row: 1910, 1912-19, 1921, 1924, and 1924. Hint: #2 He was the first native of Kansas to receive a Hall of Fame vote. Johnson was born 06-Nov-1887 in Humboldt. Schooled in California. “Discovered” in Idaho.

When I was a kid my family would arrive at Falcon games early, and watch the warmups from the field level seats next to where the team would come out. I'm not one of those dark-haired boys watching Nobis & Company file by. usually I stood in a seat closer to the field.

Frank Gore < Herschel

Like Herschel and others, the recently retired Frank Gore faces a long uphill battle to gain entrance into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Unlike Herschel, he was never considered among the elite running backs in the NFL. Unlike the more multi-faceted Walker, Gore gained a much higher percentage of his yards on rushing attempts.

.yr..G….rush. avg.rec.yards.cmb yd.TD

16 241 16000 4.3 484 3985 19985  99 FG

yd/G.yd/yr.TD/yr.TD/game

82.9 1249  6.2  0.41 FG

97.2 1514  7.0  0.45 HW

In twelve NFL seasons Herschel was almost as productive as Gore in 16 seasons, averaging more yards and touchdowns both per game and season. Which one most deserves induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

KEN GRIFFEY, Jr.  [SABR Bio] was the youngest to rack up 450 career home runs, on 09-Aug-2001 at 31 years, 261 days. Even though he was allergic to chocolate, there was a candy bar bearing his name and likeness. The Ken Griffey Jr. Milk Chocolate Bar debuted in 1989 and was limited to the Seattle market. Griffey ran for president in 1996 on a staunch pro-pepper platform. His campaign ad included appearances from politicos James Carville and Steve Forbes, along with several other MLB stars of the day. “If you outlaw pepper, only outlaws will play pepper,” Griffey stated boldly in the ad, a Nike commercial.

World Champs Open Season

I didn’t watch the entire season opener, but something several noted reminded me of something I learned in the Moneyball book I recently completed. At one point in the game the Braves had hit four balls with an exit velocity of over 99.6 mph. All four were outs. The Reds had hit five balls at 67.1 mph or less. Three fell for bloop hits, and the Reds scored three runs. Had Max Freid pitched poorly?

In Moneyball a good pitcher was defined as one who didn’t walk many batters, didn’t allow many home runs. Got batters to hit the ball on the ground, as opposed to in the air. They didn’t have to throw the ball through the wall. A pitcher can’t control bloop hits that land just beyond the reach of an outstretched glove, so it’s hard to judge a pitcher based on how many hits he allows.

Rookie reliever Spencer Strider pitched two scoreless innings, striking out 5 of the 6 batters he faced.

Mark Bowman’s bold Braves predictions:

1) 100-win season: The Mets already begin to unravel. Perhaps we should say “Metsing” instead of “Clemsoning”. Philadelphia’s defense will once again be a liability. This is the most complete team the Braves have carried in nearly 20 years. For the first time since 2003, Atlanta will produce a three-digit win total.

2) Max Fried will win the Cy Young Award: Fried posted an MLB-best 1.74 ERA after last year’s All-Star break, then enjoyed a strong postseason capped by throwing six scoreless innings in the decisive sixth game of the World Series. Armed with both a great curveball and the slider he added in 2019, the lefty has surrendered one of the game’s lowest average exit velocities over the past two seasons. Look for him to add a Cy Young Award to his collection this year.

3) Austin Riley will hit 40 homers: It’s easy to predict Matt Olson might hit 40 homers as he moves from Oakland’s spacious stadium to the lefty-friendly Truist Park. Riley collected exactly 33 doubles and 33 homers last year. The 25-year-old slugger is no longer susceptible to sliders. He slugged .507 against fastballs, .530 against breaking balls and .614 against offspeed pitches. He is poised for a breakout.

Adam McCalvy wrote about how 88-year-old Bob Uecker has returned to the Brewers broadcast booth after undergoing two surgeries and burying his daughter this past winter.

The Braves’ gold-trimmed uniforms received a thumbs-up from Uni Watch. The Mets fan usually dislikes anything that has to do with teams with Indian iconography.

Tiger made the cut, his 22nd straight at the Masters. But for the first time in his old man FootJoy gold shoes.

Eli Manning was nominated for an Emmy award, for his ESPN+ series on college football.

Thursday: worked until almost 6 pm before leaving for home. Watched the Masters for an hour. Supper was a cheesy sausage and noodles dish, with broccoli and English peas on the side.

Ceil had spent the day taking care of Shivonne, and brought home W&MC’s dog Okie for the weekend, while they luxuriate at the Masters. Winnie tries to boss Okie around, not wanting the larger dog to get away with anything on her turf.

Went to lunch with my boss today. Ceil scheduled a meetup tomorrow morning with a couple from Sunday School, so I guess I won’t be playing my usual round of golf. Will need to make a point of playing one morning next week.

CAL RIPKEN  [SABR Bio] was the first AL shortstop to have a season with 30 home runs, a batting average of .300 or better and at least 100 RBI. In 1991, Ripken won his second MVP with 34 HR, BA of .323, and 114 RBI. He is the only player to win MVP for a team that lost 95 games the same season. In 1991, Baltimore’s record was 67-95. He once played 90 consecutive games without making an error, from 14-Apr- through 27-Jul-1990.

DENISON: Americans trust The Weather Channel more than all other media organizations (by a large margin). It is clear media agendas are undermining trust in media. Bills that would legalize infanticide have been introduced in Maryland and in California. Carl R. Trueman's new book is titled Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution. See my overview. Trueman believes contemporary society made catastrophic decisions that are undermining our culture and endangering our future - we have decided that we are whatever we feel ourselves to be. Trueman defines "the modern self" as "one where authenticity is achieved by acting outwardly in accordance with one's inward feelings." Any attempt to express disapproval of someone's decision to act in accordance with their feelings is seen as a blow "against the right of that person to be whoever they wish to be." It is therefore unsurprising that Twitter and other media platforms would censor speech with which they disagree (ignoring the illogic of being intolerant with the "intolerant"). Christians can expect this narrative to continue and escalate. Our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion are more imperiled than at any time in American history. Paul warned that "the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Lip-Outs

Historically Tiger seems to have had more lip-outs than most other golfers. Is it because his misses are closer to going in than others?

We had the Masters on the TVs at the office today. No sound. Considering all the rain that fell yesterday, the course looked relatively dry.

Got home from work yesterday and turned on the Par Three Tourney. The TV had been paused, so I got to see action from earlier in the afternoon. Where else can you see great from the seven decades compete against other? Gary Player, Nick Faldo, Larry Mize, Tom Watson, and several others. Nicklaus has retired from the Par Three Tourney, saying he had let all 22 grandchildren caddie for him (also his wife and children).

A course official was wearing a cool green Par Three cap. Saw a khaiki colored one from 2017 on eBay, along with a few other Par Three flags, pins, etc. Last week Tiger and Charlie played the par three course. The kid wasn’t used to such sloped greens.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/golf/tiger-woods-reveals-what-charlie-was-like-at-augusta/ar-AAVYThR?ocid=entnewsntp&cvid=02aeee1199e34deb82c4b448fd08a432

Saw at least three golfers wearing pink today. Shirt. Vest. Pants. Must be the new cool color for spring.

Ceil cooked homemade orange chicken, breading each piece before cooking. Very good. Watched extended Masters coverage on ESPN with Scott Van Pelt, Sean McDonough, and Curtis Strange.

Gotta get back to the diet harder. Tuesday I drank a protein shake for breakfast, ate one cookie and small brownie for a late lunch. On the way home I grabbed two small McChicken sandwiches at McDonalds (their crispy chicken sandwich went off special). Later a tiny bag of chips and popcorn. Today I had one small brownie for breakfast and one donut for lunch. Nothing else until supper. Still more than I have been eating.

Crashed on the couch again Tuesday night. Currently reading Moneyball, the book about Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane that was made into a Brad Pitt movie.

Not sure why I’ve felt so sore all this week. Maybe because I’ve not done much in the evening. Knocked out my 3.5 miles this morning at the gym, with a time slightly better than Tuesday.

Other topics of discussion in our office today: which Golden Girl would you want to be? I would say Blanch, just because she has the coolest name.

These days everyone is buzzing about a game that’s played on their cell phone called Wordle. I think Lang plays it. At least one new puzzle a day, trying to guess the word by guessing letters. I think people only post on social media when they guess the word in only a few steps. No posts of wrong answers. I’m sure it is a good game to play, but whenever I see everyone playing the same game, I think about the episode of Star Trek Next Generation when everyone was playing an addictive game, that was actually an alien that was taking over the bodies of the entire crew. The robot Data wasn’t affected, and had to save the day.

I get a ton of emails in my yahoo account because I enter so many contests. When I’m watching TV I will go through and delete delete delete, checking to make sure I don’t get a winner notification, so the emails don’t pile up too much. Had I been checking better I could’ve scored Hawks tickets.

So the Lakers missed the playoffs, right? I don’t think they have anyone on their roster under 32 years old. They had wanted me to, but I turned them down.

Right now Chickfila also has a BBQ version of the CFA sandwich available. I think it has bacon. Not sure about cheese.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE  [SABR Bio] struck out four times in the All-Star game the same year he led the majors in hitting. In the 15-inning 1967 ASG four different pitchers struck him out: Dean Chance, Gary Peters, Al Downing, and Catfish Hunter. No one else has ever struck out four times in an All-Star game. Familiar with back pain himself, he practiced chiropractic on some of his teammates. A car crash in 1954 was the initial cause of his back pain. He found that a good chiropractor could ease the pain.  Eventually, he became somewhat adept as an amateur practitioner with what was called “natural skills.” He had the most hits in the majors from 1960 through 1969 (1,877).

DENISON: Before Jalen Wilson led Kansas to the men's title, he tweeted, "Thank you God, without your blessings I wouldn't have any of this."

Roads in Augusta weren't paved until after WWII - including Washington Road and Magnolia Lane.
