When Willie Mays played for the New York Giants, he hit 4 home runs in 8 innings – and was on deck when the Giants’ final out was made. Hank Aaron hit 2 home runs in that 1961 game, the most combined home runs in one game by two hall of famers. Saturday: skipped golf. Housework upstairs. Laundry while watching Olympic golf, then USA vs Puerto Rico in basketball. Went to get my emissions checked. Also got my free Taco Bell nacho fries and RaceTrac drink. And my free birthday slice at Cheesecake Factory, but made the mistake I always tell myself not to make. Always stick to a simple flavor cheesecake. Plain cheesecake is great. I messed up and got peanut butter and chocolate. It was like 10% cheesecake. Good, but I missed out on the cheesecake. My bad.

Made Ceil’s leftover chicken salad into a sandwich for lunch. She made homemade pizza for supp.

Sunday School and worship. Forgot to count attendance. Usually we sit in the back, where I can count. This time we sat in the front because C was talking to Tracey. Leftovers for lunch and supper. Chicken salad and a patty melt. Lazy day. Plopped on the couch to watch Scottie win gold. Went to bed before 9 pm.

Up early to go to the gym. Maybe my pain in finally starting to lessen. We shall see. I want to play golf twice this week.

For lunch today I cashed in my free birthday buffet at CiCi’s Pizza. For the win. Lots of guys who looked like me were there.

With a wedding in mid September, it’s too early for me to get a haircut, though I’m starting to get a little shaggy. Imentioned to Ceil that I need her to give me a little trim, and she acted like she’d been waiting years to hear me say this.

RUBE WADDELL [SABR Bio] was the first American League pitcher to strike out at least 300 batters two seasons in a row: 302 in 1903 and 349 in 1904, for Connie Mack’s Philadelphia A’s. Wadell played for CHC in 1901. ME: what gets me (in additional to seeing my savings wiped out), is that some politicians continue to talk about how great “their” economy is and how any bad news was caused by the administration who’s been out of office four 4 years – and how half the country continues to believe all the scripted crapola that comes out of their mouths. Not that the other side is doing any better. Pretty fed up with the entire political process right now.

Last week I was checking my savings and didn’t feel too bad about retirement. Now no telling what will happen. Could get much worse by Christmas, they say. Guess I’m gonna have to rely on God.

You might think many of my thoughts and opinions are pretty vanilla and uncontroversial and old school, but you know, they are most probably in line with a vast majority of Americans. I'm not trying to be different and flashy. I'm just trying to be me, a child of God and follower of Jesus.

As the Braves Turn

Braves trade for reliever Luke Jackson and World Series hero Jorge Soler. Not exactly Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle, but let’s see any other team do better. Yankees gave up 3 prospects for the Marlins star. This could be the Yankees year. I still won’t be able to see the Braves on my TV.

On the Braves radio broadcast Ben Ingram said that the Blue Jays had traded a catcher to the Red Sox. Earlier this season the catcher had played for the Jays in a game against the Red Sox that was suspended due to rain. This game will be completed in August. If the catchers plays in the game for the Red Sox, it will be the first time in over 238,500 games played that one player played in the same game for both teams.

Back over 30 years ago Joel Youngblood played in an afternoon game for one team, then was traded and played in the night game for a second team – in a different city (Chicago and Pittsburg, I think). Youngblood collected base hits in both games. I think there have been cases of players traded between the first and second game of the doubleheader, the players passing each other between the home and visitor clubhouses. On May 30, 1922 Cliff Heathcote traded for Max Flack. Both players played for both teams that day. During batting practice Ralph Kiner and Joe Garagiola were traded from the home Pirates to the visiting Cubs as part of a 10 player trade.

Braves won their second straight last Sunday. Another starter got hurt, but Lopez’ MRI was negative. Now 6 starters are out. Snitker’s fault! Ynoa is back rehabbing from his injury, which may give the Braves a much needed arm for the stretch drive. Fried returned today. Things are looking up. Helps that the Phillies are struggling.

Thursday night the Braves won their third straight, and 4th out of five. Won again on Friday. Olson is back to hitting home runs. Looks like SS Arcia is heating back up again as well. Also Riley. Wednesday the Braves had Soler batting leadoff. Better than Duvall, I suppose.

Freddie Freeman’s young son Maximus was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with a rare disease. Freddie was with the Dodgers in Arizona but flew back to be with his family. Sounds like Max is out of danger now, but it was touch & go there for a while. Freddie’s wife Chelsea said they believe in the power of prayer, and asked for continued prayers.

Thursday: left work at 530 after signing up for Medicare. Ceil cooked a teriyaki stir fry, steamed broccoli, and tossed a salad. She had also made me a big batch of homemade cinnamon rolls, sort of an early birthday present. Good stuff.

Matthew had been wanting to get a piece of metal to use as a grill for his meat smoker. We had discussed several options, and I had inquired with my fabricators about cutting a piece. Them M sent me a picture of a piece of metal that had fallen off a truck passing his house. It was perfect to use as a grill. The Lord provides in mysterious ways.

Got hit with a series of hard to resolve emails. Plenty of work to do. Customer may be 35% off last year's pace, but there's just as much work to process 65 pieces as there is to process 100.

Wednesday: worked past 530 trying to finish up month end. In July all overtime was cut out since our customers were extra slow, plus I used up a week of vacation time. Got caught up on some of my work, but not all the extra stuff that I was asked to do.

Traffic was gridlocked in Peachtree Corners, so I didn’t get home until 645. I quickly cut the grass before supper. C cooked lemon chicken, grilled potato medallions, and spinach.

Tuesday night at men’s Bible study my prayer request was for God’s help in loving and communicating with Ceil, so of course that’s the exact area where Satan attacked.

Getting out and moving around cutting the grass didn’t lessen all the pain I’ve had the past two days. I’ve really been uncomfortable. Last night I slept on the couch, which helped. Forgive me for having my days out of order. Seemed to make sense at the time.

Friday night: patty melts, sour cream potatoes, and tossed salad.

First Bite: B&W Burgers

Tuesday a vendor took us to lunch, to a burger bar in downtown Norcross. Good stuff. BBQ burger and tots.

I’m not a fan of the thick cut onion rings, like B&W have. Dislike the little stringy ones as well, but I love me some regular sized onion rings. Used to love the rings at the varsity. Those ladies had on their rubber gloves, and would grab a big handful to plop into the little basket. Now the rings at the Varsity are nice and neat and larger, and not as fun as they used to be. Haven’t been to the Varsity in ages. Like many places, their prices have gone sky high while their service has gone from the super fast “whutdayahave” to slow boat to China.

Later Tuesday afternoon I had leftover Brunswick stew and potato salad. Was called on to speak at a retirement celebration, and was able to mutter a few coherent words, I hope.

I left work Monday not long after 5 pm. Stopped by Dollar Tree for bar soap. Every afternoon I’ve been stopping at Taco Bell for my free small order of small nacho fries. I went through the drive thru. They handed me my bag and I drove away. Had to stop next door at the post office to mail a letter. Only after that did I open the Taco Bell bag. The sticker on the bag had DAVE printed out, as well as SM NACHO FRIES. But inside the bag was a larger order of loaded nacho fries, covered with cheese and meat and stuff. Too late to go back. A treat.

Didn’t spoil my supper. C made a sausage and spaghetti noodles dish, with steamed broccoli. C was plays on her laptop (as was I). I turned on The Weakest Link. One episode had military veterans. First time I ever saw contestants run the table in a round. Then the next round they got zero.

Tuesday: up early to work out again today. Monday I felt good after working out. Felt it a little this time, but it was good to stretch and move.

Left work at 445 and grabbed a free Coke at RaceTrac. Too full to eat any supper. Rested and then headed over to the final men’s Bible Study. Eight in attendance: three of us David’s, Reid, Robert, Dan, Ryan, and Matt. Robert prompted each of us to share what led us to faith in Jesus. A good time of sharing and prayer.

Lots of pain on Tuesday night. After working out two straight days I decided to sleep in on Wednesday morning. Super busy last day of the month. Lots of leftovers to munch on at work: macaroni & cheese, banana pudding, cookies, and cake.

Coworker Marty, the Kentucky fan, is a no-nonsense ex-military guy. Young father. Does an excellent job. Received a promotion to supervise three coworkers. Just traded in his big Chevy Silverado pickup for a smaller Chevy Colorado. Better gas mileage for his long commute. I told him that his only mistake was that he didn’t utter a peep in the office about it beforehand. Just showed up with the new truck. Everyone knows that you’re supposed to talk endlessly for a month before making such a large purchase.

Had an electrician working in the living room putting in sconces. Also a new light in our closet. Badly needed.

Former coworker Jeff Thomas called me out of the blue late Wednesday: another former coworker Curtis Fraser had passed away suddenly. He had come down with covid, then suffered congestive heart failure. I don’t think Curtis was 60 yet. A husband and father with nearly grown kids. Jabo and Eric had played in Curtis’ company golf tournament back in May. Jeff and Curtis had started with Tull back not long after me, along with young guns Wheat, Luna, Garrett, Harris, and Murphree. Jabo was pretty shook up. Curtis worked in 01 and purchasing and even alongside me in 20 for a spell, even handling the slit coil for EZGo back before we started coordinating part production for them. I always remember the story of Curtis buying a huge jug of salsa at Costco – then dropping it on his feet, ruining a new pair of white bucks. R.I.P.

Two 3rd floor employees are out with covid. I’m making sure to take my vitamins every day.

Jeff and his family were in Boston finishing up a vacation the day the airline computers went down. He had to rent a car and drive the 19 hours back to Atlanta. Spent the night in West Virginia. Each family member took a 2-1/2 hour shift behind the wheel.

I am way too caught up in the world today: social media, TV, movies, sports, Hollywood – much more than my friends. Hard to really call me a sports fan any more. Besides college football, I rarely watch sports. In general I keep up with whether the Braves win or lose, but almost never follow any other baseball, football, or basketball team. I know the Braves starters until they get hurt. Couldn’t name the relievers or tell you the stories of the players filling in for Acuna, Harris, and Albies. I need to read more.

DAVE WINFIELD   [SABR Bio] was the first Yankee after Joe DiMaggio to collect at least 100 RBI in 5 consecutive seasons, from 1982-86: 106, 116, 100, 114, & 104 (DiMaggio’s was 1936-42, the first 7 seasons of his career). Winfield was the first member of the 3000 hit club with 1000 in each league. He had 1,134 in the NL with the Padres, and 1,976 H in the AL with NYY, CAL, TOR, MIN, & CLE. Albert Pujols was the second player to achieve the feat. Winfield was an All-Star 12 times (4 in the NL and 8 in the AL). He hit a ASG record 7 doubles. Cal Ripken has 3, tied for 2nd with 8 others.

Bryson's Break 50 Challenge

Bryson DeChambeau was never one of my favorites, despite being a Christian and home schooled. But he does seem to be fun guy. All the fist pumping at the US Open seemed sincere. He makes YouTube videos. After shooting 58 he and a friend decided to try to shoot 50, by playing best ball from the front tees. They have shot 50 but not yet 49. Bryson tried it with Sergio Garcia as well.

Earlier this year Bryson reached out to the two Presidential candidates and invited them to participate in his break 50 challenge. This weekend we watched the video of Bryson and Trump shooting 50. For his 77 years, Trump is still a good golfer. He would hit a decent shot, allowing Bryson the chance to go for the green. More than once Trump’s shot was closer to the pin than Bryson’s. On one par 3 hole Trump hit it closer, then Trump sank the putt for birdie. Later on a par 5, Trump’s tee shot was better, his approach closer, and Trump sank the eagle putt. Bryson fell on the ground with excitement, exclaiming “He’s walking back to the cart like a boss!”

The 18 holes were edited down to 36 minutes, making it easy to watch. The video has claimed 6 million views, making it the highest trending video on YouTube right now. Bryson was giving $10,000.00 per shot under par to the Wounded Warrior Project – a total of $220,000.00.

Sunday afternoon: stopped by Dekalb Farmers Market. Waited in the parking lot waiting on Ceil. There was a big wreck on 285 that we were able to detour around. Every time a closer parking space opens up, I move closer. Moved a total of 7 times. Kind of a game I play when I’m here. Got right up front. C always expects curb service.

Normally I park further away, at the end of a row where I can park all the way over next to the curb, the furthest away from the space. But at Dekalb F Market C gets upset if I’m not right where she can see me when she comes out – even though the place is always packed with hundreds of shoppers and cars in the huge lot. Yesterday by the time she came out it was pouring down rain so she wanted me to pull up to the curb, which is hard to see in the rain with shoppers coming in and out and two cars already parked there at the curb. I hate pulling up to the curb (except in the rain) because it is as if I am more important than everyone else.

Sunday night Winnie didn’t want to go outside before bedtime. Then at 1230 am she was pawing at me. We went downstairs but all she wanted was some water. Then at 515 when my alarm went off she wanted to go downstairs again, just for more water.

Monday: up early to do core training and stretching at the gym.

August Bobbleheads & SGAs
