Labor Day Weekend

August 30: BBQ for lunch. Also Brunswick Stew, potato salad, and macaroni & cheese. This country went downhill when everyone started calling it mac’n cheese. Today there’s still some potato salad and macaroni & cheese to eat.

August 31: took the extreme northern route up Peachtree Parkway to get a burger at Red Robin. That was the highlight of the evening. The hamburger patty was good, but as usual the Red Robin bun tasteless. Burger came with a fried egg and good bacon, and tomato and shredded lettuce, the best kind of lettuce for a burger. No mayonnaise thank goodness, but I probably should’ve left the mayo on there. Without ketchup the burger was on the dry side. Fries were salty but good and hot. I wonder if they add sugar to the fries, like McDonalds does. Tasted like it.

McDonalds fries are fried in oil with a chemical added to resemble beef, to give the fries their delicious smell.

After work last Friday C and I took the dogs for a walk down by the river. Went through the Chickfila drive through on the way home. A big long line even at 7:45 pm.

Ceil has been watching this Canadian show Heartland, about a family on a horse ranch. Just finished season two. There are 13 more seasons.

Saturday morning early AM golf. I am improving a little. Then a ton of housework, getting stuff cleared out so we can get new floors next week. So good to organize. But we still have lots of stuff. Ceil has a dozen journals with quiet time notes, going back to the 80’s. I have all my scrapbook calendars and bobbleheads and other stuff. Man when I retire my next job will be to sell or get rid of all my extra stuff.

Drove out to Gwinnett for the Stripers game. Hung out with old Johnny and Hugh from Hot Stove.

Watched UGA/Clemson at my friend Reid’s backyard. Ate Mexican food. Seven couples but there was plenty of room to spread out. Kept up with the Tech game on my phone.

Sunday School and worship. Chicken tacos for lunch. Ceil grilled chicken kabobs for supper. Tried to do more housework, but all the dust had me sneezing uncontrollably the rest of the day and night. By Monday my body was sore from all the sneezing, and the 12000+ steps I’d taken on Saturday. I’m still not 100%.

More housework on Monday. Lots of work upstairs. Filled my car with giveaway items for Goodwill. Filled the trashcan as well. Chicken tacos for lunch, spaghetti for supper.

W&MC picked up Okie on their way back into town last night. On Saturday Will attended the Oklahoma/Tulane game. Sunday they stopped in St. Louis, and walked around downtown.

I had seen people talking about Bishop Sycamore, but I didn’t know what they were talking about. Schools like BS and IMG Academy exist solely to groom athletes. I’m not impressed. Nowadays high school players change schools every year, thinking the grass is greener somewhere else. No wonder so many college athletes enter the transfer portal. Even the Dr. Pepper commercial is making fun of it.

At the Sept 7 game I was constantly reviewing Fried’s pitch count and left on base total. Also his strikeout total. Only one earned run.  Not quite as good an outing for Fried than his past six outings. Six innings, six hits, four walks, five strikeouts. 96 pitches over 6 innings = 16 pitches per inning, just over 5 pitches per out. He was under 15 pitches in half the innings. According to Leo Mazzone, that’s a decent performance. Fried didn’t get the decision, but he left with the lead. He did fail to execute a bunt attempt. Fried might’ve done better if he hadn’t worn those white shoes. After all, it’s after Labor Day.

Last week Morton allowed one run over six innings. Just 3 hits and 8 strikeouts. The bullpen allowed the tying run in the 7th and go ahead run in the 8th to lose the game. I’m gonna try to check out Fried’s last few starts. Dodgers have won 14 more games than the Braves, and have a murders row of starting pitchers.

I haven’t been motivated to finish my CS Lewis book Out of the Silent Planet. I’m slogging through Steve Berry’s The Kaiser’s Web, which purports that Eva Braun’s suicide was faked, and her child has grown up and is running to become Germany’s leader.

I was taking a fish oil vitamin and dropped it on the floor. Couldn’t find it. I figured it would be good for Winnie if she ate it.

Had my mid-year review last week. Went better than expected.

While re-watching Seinfeld recently, there was one or two episodes I almost cringed at, knowing the content probably wouldn’t be politically correct today. Turns out I was right: certain episodes of Seinfeld and The Office are being cancelled / quietly removed from distribution. They'll only live on in Lego re-creations.

We're never again going to get a TV episode as watched as the 'Seinfeld' finale, which had six times the number of viewers as the Game of Thrones finale.

FORD FRICK [SABR Bio] wrote the book “Games, Asterisks and People; Memoirs of a Lucky Fan”. The book explains much about his relationship with Babe Ruth and his time as commissioner. During his tenure as National League President, Frick saw to the funeral for the destitute Hack Wilson, who died holding the record for most home runs in a season by a National League player. Frick pioneered the first radio show devoted to sports news, in 1931 while working as a sportscaster for WOR Radio in New York City.
