Progress Report: Winnie the Dog

Winnie has been better about going outside and quickly doing her business. She used to get all distracted and want to sniff around everywhere, especially the mailbox post. When I used to take Barney outside I would kick the pine cones and sweetgum balls off the driveway. I can’t do that with Winnie, because she wants to chase each one I kick. Unlike Barney, Winnie loves for me to throw her toy across the room for her to catch. She’s gotten to be quite the rebounder. While Barney used to love to watch TV, Winnie almost never pays attention. Then a few days ago she took notice of a dog on TV. Since then – nothing. Last Wednesday Winnie celebrated her first birthday.

Ceil has been liking it when I drive her around to run her errands. Most times I just sit in the car and catch up on emails. She’d like it if Winnie would ride with us, but Winnie really isn’t crazy about going on car rides.

Last week W&MC took Shivonne on a hike up Yonah Mountain.

Replays are really slowing down basketball, baseball, and football. In baseball the umps reviewing the play in NYC don’t want to show up the umps on the field, so they rarely overturn calls. In basketball don’t the court officials replay their own calls? At least there’s that.  Wild that now like in football, now in basketball a player can be thrown out of the game for a flagrant foul. That’s what happened to that UNC sharpshooter against Baylor.

There are some athletes I will never like. One of them plays for the Lakers. Guess I shouldn’t name them. Others I’m not crazy about, but appreciate their hustle, like Kobe or Bryce Harper. Athletes and entertainers I like / appreciate are just that. No idol worship or putting on a pedestal. Also there are some teams I just don’t like. Some teams that win championships that I’m not crazy about. Others my feelings might ebb and flow. Always like the Dodgers uniforms, but right now I don’t like the team. Same with the Lakers.

Braves GM Alex Anthropolous commenting on his negotiations with Freddie Freeman. While AA works his deals far removed from the media spotlight, once the deal is done he is easy to access.

RALPH TERRY  [SABR Bio] was on the mound when the Yankees won their last World Series before beginning a drought of 14 years, one of the longest such stretches since they changed their name to Yankees. Terry pitched a 1-0 complete 7th game of the 1962 WS over SFG. Two season previous, he was also on the mound when the World Series ended, becoming the first AL pitcher to throw the final pitch in two World Series Game Sevens. In 1957 for KCA, his record was 4-11. His record pitching for NYY was 23-12 (however his ERA in ’57 for the A’s was 3.38 and in ’62 it was 3.19, when he didn’t have to face the Yankees). His won/loss record was 23-12 for a pennant-winning team just 6 years after going 4-11 for a 7th place team. He was the pitcher who surrendered the WS-winning HR to the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski in the 7th game of the 1960 Fall Classic. Terry was born in Big Cabin, Oklahoma and Mickey Mantle in Spavinaw. It is a quick drive between them. Ralph is a member of three regional sports Halls of Fame: the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. After baseball, Terry became a professional golfer. He won the 1980 Midwest PGA Championship, then, based on his status as a PGA of America sectional champion, he qualified for and played in four PGA Tour events in 1981 and 1982. In 1986, he started playing on the Senior PGA Tour.  His best finish was a tie for 10th at the 1989 Showdown Classic. He also won a state-wide bowling title. Ralph teamed with Gary Meserve of Larned, KS to win the 1979 Kansas State Doubles Bowling title.
