Looks at Books

Started a new book yesterday: Pat Conroy’s “My Losing Season”. About his senior season playing basketball at the Citadel, and his life growing up in a military family, moving around from NC to Arlington to Beaufort SC then college. Took place in the 1950’s and early 60’s. Also teachers and events that helped mold into the writer he is today. Very good so far.

Finally finished Outlander, set in Scotland back in the Middle Ages. You’d probably like this book as well. First in a series. Also a TV show.

I’d never heard of Vaughn Grissom before this article appeared on my news feed. After slugging a home run and stealing a base in his major league debut against the woeful Red Sox, Braves fans are engraving his hall of fame plaque and replacing Ronald Acuna in the leadoff spot. No need for 2022 MLB All Sar Dansby Swanson, who had a big hit of his own Wednesday night as well.

Who had more career starts – Phil Niekro or Greg Maddux? Answer below.

What are your favorite Christmas songs? The other day at work we were making up a play list. What did I miss?

Dogs barking jingle bells

Carpenters I’m Christmasing With You

Springsteen Santa Claus is Coming to Town

OJays Christmas Just Ain’t Christmas Without the One You Love

Feliz Navidad Jose Feliciano

You’re a Mean One Mister Grinch

Manheim Steamroller Hark How the Bells and Silent Night.

A great season of Only Murders in the Building. Who killed Bunny? The plot keeps revealing clues, but perhaps not who the murderer is. Now so much focus on who Glitter Guy is (the mean cop?)  - who isn’t necessarily the killer. And Oliver carrying the big bag of dips was similar to the young lawyers carrying bags of drinks on this week’s episode of Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

And does Woo have the same name as the Falcons’ kicker? Almost. Woo Young-woo versus Younghoe Koo. Just think what her name would be if they got married.

PHIL NIEKRO [SABR Bio] is the first player elected to the Hall of Fame who had once played for the Toronto Blue Jays. HOF 1997; Played for TOR in 1987. He pitched the first no-hitter for the Atlanta Braves, on 05-Aug-1973 against the Padres. Four Hall of Fame pitchers are the only ones who have starred more games than he has. Niekro started 716 G. The top 4 are Young (815), Ryan (773), Sutton (756) & Maddux (740).

Had a crisis pop up at 4 pm Tuesday. Didn’t get home until almost 8:30. Fixed me a quesadilla out of the yummy leftovers from Monday. I had planned on eating at Firebirds, since C was at her ministry.

Got 40 MPG on my drive to Macon and back yesterday. I might just reverse “climate change” my own bad self.

Denison on life, death, and Olivia Newton John: we deceive ourselves into believing that if we do not believe in God, He does not exist. If we do not believe in hell, we cannot go there. If we do not believe that the Bible is true, we can ignore its truths. The best way to prepare for the afterlife is to trust not in personal opinion but in the Lord of eternity. To put our faith in the one who stepped from heaven onto earth and from eternity into time, who died and then rose from the dead, who ascended to heaven and now offers us the only pathway to joining him in paradise (John 3:18; 14:6). Each morning on my walk I pause beside a cemetery and pray, "Help me be ready for you to come to us or for me to go to you."

DENISON: the Rev. Al Sharpton claimed "the Bible is about choice" when it comes to abortion. He explained, "If you are a minister, as I am, you can preach to people to convert them; you do not make laws to compel them." Of course, he is ignoring completely the clear biblical teaching that life begins at conception and the fact that from Scripture to today, man’s laws exist to "compel" people to do what is right for their sake and the common good.
