UGA's White Helmets

When Vince Dooley was hired in 1964, he considered switching to white helmets. An assistant coach’s wife was an art teacher, and she helped design UGA’s “Power G” – an offshoot of the Packers’ G (copied with permission). Now the Dawgs keep a white helmet on hand for recruits to try on. The white helmets look like the helmets the Gainesville Red Elephants wear, where Micah Owings is on staff.

Back in the day Bear Bryant had Bama wear white helmets against teams wearing red helmets – a smart idea. After Bear died, Ray Perkins revived the practice.

I need to check out articles about the time George Brett wore two different style shoes in an all star game. Also two NY Times articles about Wimbledon’s “new” grass, and keeping it dry during rain.

The Bible says to look for signs from heaven. Three eclipses are forming a huge X across the United States. Is this a sign?

CAL RIPKEN [SABR Bio] had more years between his first and second Most Valuable Player awards than any other American League player in the Expansion Era. He won MVPs in 1983 & 1991 - an 8-year difference. Lou Gehrig went 12 years between 1924 and 1936, the AL record. In 1990, Ripken made no errors in his 95 regular season games, totaling 431 chances. Both were major league records for shortstops. Cal’s record was broken by teammate Mike Bordick, who had 110 errorless games and 543 chances in 2002. The AL Gold Glove for that season went to Ozzie Guillen, who had 17 errors in 743 chances. Cal had 3 errors in 680 chances. Ripken was the first player to win the All-Star MVP award and the All-Star Home Run Derby the same year.

Season WAR leaders whose WAR was 5.0+ better than that same year’s MVP’s.
