Thrifting

Bought a grey Denmark High PE t-shirt for a buck, something I’d been looking for. Named after Dr. Denmark. Things I saw but didn’t buy: cool pair of Hawks warmup pants, a pair of grey/black saddle oxford sneakers, a white long sleeve golf shirt. and a White Sox jersey. Also spotted a $70 pair of Mitchell & Ness lime green Hawks shorts on line that I don’t need.

Thursday: took the northern route home, making several stops. Was after 7 pm when I got home. Leftover roast beef for supper. Also homemade salsa and chips. Watched a Paul Rudd / Tina Fey movie: Admission. Also a Seinfeld episode or two. Went to bed early but had trouble sleeping.

COOL PAPA BELL  [SABR Bio] tutored Maury Wills and Lou Brock on base stealing. Bell pitched for the St. Louis Stars of the Negro National League 1922-1924. Wills & Brock stole more than 1,500 major league bases, even though their starting ages in the majors were 26 & 22 respectively. As a pitcher, Bell’s career ERA of almost 6.00 was a factor in his position switch to the outfield. His mediocre pitching stats, coupled with legendary foot speed, prompted manager “Big Bill” Gatewood to develop Bell into a switch-hitter and move him to the outfield.  Reputed to have been so fast that Bell could turn off the light switch and jump into bed before it went dark (He actually could!). The explanation for this is given to us by Hall of Famer Buck Leonard. Along with his reputation for being faster than, um… electricity, he once stole 175 bases in one season. Even if the real number turns out to be only 125, it’s still very impressive. No other Hall of Famer was born in his native state. He is the only Hall of Famer born in the state of Mississippi.

Article: ways to avoid rambling, a fear I always have. Do these things before speaking:

1. Have a plan. Write down what points you want to make. When you’ve covered those points, end the call. People won’t be so wary of talking to you.

2. Speak clearly and concisely. By having a set structure to common types of questions, you can be sure you answer the questions thoroughly and concisely.

3. Make it your intent to speak slowly. Stop speaking periodically, to make sure the other person has their say. While they are talking – listen (instead of thinking about what you’re going to say next).

4. Before speaking or answering a question, pause and gather your thoughts.

5. Halfway through a conversation, remember these steps and repeat.

6. Focus on the call, especially if you initiated it. Do not multitask.

7. When writing / texting / emailing: use correct spelling and proper punctuation, to make sure what you’re saying to communicated clearly and accurately.
