Miss Shivonne Goes to Washington: Year 2

Sermon notes: Adrian Coetzer @ JFBC: persevering in our faith.

In Hebrews they were real close to falling away from Jesus. They needed encouragement to hang on and trust Jesus. Why should we?

Hebrews 8:1-6 our high priest has taken His seat at the right hand of God. He also is the mediator.
A tough passage.

Summary: Jesus is better than anything else the world has to offer, so put your trust in Him. Why? How? The passage takes us back to creation. Hang on the finish line is still coming.

Context: one day someone will come and crush sin. Who will be a friend of him? God will bring peace. The story of bondage and slavery. God leads his people to the promised land, and gives them His Law.

God doesn't expect perfection, instead giving us a way to forgiveness. Not King David but one of his descendants. Prophesied in the scriptures. God will be written on their hearts.

Hebrews 8:8-13: O will be merciful. One will come and crush the serpent, complete the covenant. Then God goes silent for centuries, until Jesus is born. Until then nothing was comparable. Jesus completed the Old Testament covenant, made good to be better. Why settle for second best?

They had been focused on their circumstances and feelings. Jesus represents better promises. when he ascended, he promised to never leave us. He promised to give us a helper.

Implications:

1. Jesus is worth the cost to follow Him.
2. Jesus is better than anything else we could put our trust in. Better than comfort or a promotion
3. If he is worth dying for, he is worth living for. Easier to die for a cause than living for it.
4. The best is yet to come. Jesus saves us. The race is far from over. The story doesn't end with his resurrection. Jesus prays for us every day. One day we will worship with Him.

Persevere. Live for Jesus. Why sit in business class when you can move up to first class? What do you have to lose?
