Dawgs, Jackets Win Thrillers

Two great games. Dawgs come from behind to beat Tennessee 44-41 in overtime. UGA’s eighth straight win over the Vols, and their fifth straight come from behind victory. Tennessee does have a good team, and a good QB. Wouldn’t want to face them again.

In the second quarter Ceil texted from northern Virginia. They weren’t able to watch the game. She asked “Is UGA bad? Or in Tennessee good? So many ways to answer those questions. The SEC is tough. Playing in Neyland Stadium is tough. Vols have a new QB. Dawgs hadn’t exactly lit it up last week against Austin peay. Gunner’s first road start. His first SEC start. C wasn’t hearing the announcers talking over and over about how in the last 4 seasons the Vols had staked early leads, only to lose.

Tennessee did look good. I was amazed how the Bulldog offense was able to retake the lead 5 times in the game. After UGA came out in the second half and ran the ball down Tennessee’s throat, the Dawgs run game shifted ever so slightly. Instead of quick developing run plays, instead Bobo was calling slower developing run plays, and the Vols were able to stuff the run more.

Jackets also came from behind, and also won on the last play of the game. Tech’s offense is slightly better than Clemson’s. The difference may be that the GT QB King is better than Clemson QB Klubnik. GT kicker Birr may be the best kicker in GT history. His 55 yard field goal tied for the longest in GT history – with the legendary E O Whealler, Tech’s first soccer style kicker back in the mid-1970’s.

When Tech drove down on their opening drive, I thought they should take the field goal. But maybe that’s one of the things that makes Brent Key so good. Tech could the next 8 games and sneak into the ACC Championship Game, but need either Miami or FSU to fall behind them in the standings.

I guess Tech doesn’t care that you can’t see the GT helmet logo. Hard to see the helmet stripes as well. Guess they’re just so happy to have an icy white uniform. Pretty sure that fad has jumped the shark. Looks more like all white practice uniforms.

The fans did a good job with the whiteout, though we couldn't see the older fans in the west stands. But if I was a student and I wore a white t-shirt for the whiteout, I wouldn’t wear black pants. That is Tech students for you. Tech fans gotta stop tearing down the goalposts every time the win in an upset. I had expected Tech to win the game. I guess Tech will be fined for storming the field, but after Birr’s game winning field goal the entire Tech team ran out onto the field – dressed in head to toe white. The team and cheerleaders covered a good deal of the field, so it was almost hard to tell when the fans were coming out onto the field as well.

Speaking of schools getting fined for fans storming the field, for years it was the tradition at Clemson after every game – win or lose – for the fans to run out onto the field. There they would gather with the team at midfield to sing the alma mater. Guess they can’t do that any more.

Clemson's purple jerseys made a rare road appearance. Sounds like the fans and / or players had been clambering to see them. After Saturday, Dabo might put them back into mothballs. Win some games, and then they can start thinking about the uniforms.

I hear the GT basketball has a good recruiting class.

I had a hunch that Vanderbilt would upset South Carolina in Colombia, and they did. Vandy probably would have won even if SC’s “Heisman candidate” QB hadn’t gotten hurt, but it gave thew Gamecock fans an excuse.

Good move by the Tennessee coach to tell last yea’s “freshman sensation” QB Nico Iamgonnaleaveya to take a hike. Nico take’s UCLA’s NIL money, the at the first sign of hardship – a Bruin loss on Friday night – Nico takes a “leave of absence” to “get his head together”. Sure mental health is a thing, and the pressure on these kids is unbelievable. I may sound like an old fart, but it used to be considered an elite athlete, you gotta be tough mentally as well as physically. Ask Tom Brady.
