Braves Sign Keuchel

Had on the Braves game last night while cleaning. Never pulled out my laptop. Got a notification on my watch and phone that the Braves had signed pitcher Dallas Keuchel. Turned up the volume on the TV to see if the announcers would say anything about it. About five minutes later I remembered the game was a replay of the afternoon game, so obviously the announcers weren’t going to say anything about it. The signing relieves the Braves starting rotation of Kevin Gausman, whose lack of a good third pitch makes him a better candidate for the bullpen.

Now with Soroka, Fried, Keuchel, Teheran, and Folty starting and youngsters Newcombe, Jackson, Tuki, and Gausman in the bullpen, the Braves have taken a step in the right direction – with money and excess players available to deal at the trade deadline. Fried got hit with a comebacker. Second time that’s happened. Not his best night but you can’t be lights out every time you pitch. Tuki and the bullpen came in and threw shutout innings, and the offense came back.

Another HR for Riley, his ninth in 16 games. Only two other big leaguers have done that. Riley didn’t even know who was pitching. Donaldson HR and Freddie became the sixth Brave with 200 HR and doubles, joining Aaron, Mathews, Chipper, Murphy, and Andruw.

On June 29 I’m attending a 20th anniversary party at Smith’s Olde Bar in Morningside for Uni Watch, the uniform website I read. Lang’s old friend Andy Hyman will be there. Andy opened the Distant Raplays store in Buckhead, helping create the throwback jersey craze. Might be tough to wear a Chinese knockoff jersey, considering Andy also worked for Ebbets Field Flannels. Finally a place I can wear my knee high striped Braves socks. Will have to wear shorts to show them off.

Just used the old “he hates everything” from the old Life cereal commercial. Looked it up and old Mikey is doing well.

Last Thursday: C had fixed chicken sausage in cheesy noodles and tossed salad. I was tired from staying up late the night before, so I went upstairs to read and clear out emails. Bed early.

Tuesday: Ceil’s mom’s meniscus surgery went well and they were back home after a long day.

Stayed at work doing stuff till six. Made a couple of stops on the way home: Chickfila and unloaded some giveaways at Goodwill. Had a package at our door but had to take it to a neighbor.

Been going through the fridge trying eat stuff that’s been sitting there. Made some cheese fries and cooked up some lunch for today: some sort of non meat chicken like stuff. Added cheese and cooked some bacon but wound up burning parts of it. Brought bread to make into sandwiches. Watched Jeopardy and the Braves and Modern Family and some Blackish but mostly the Braves. Wasn’t in the mood for a movie.

Wednesday: watched most of the first half. At halftime I looked at the clock and went to bed. Had been up late the previous two nights.

Messed around at the office until 5:40. Stopped by Dairy Queen to order an ice cream cake for the Friday meeting. Then Kroger for several items. M has been bringing home all these protein mixes from Whole Foods. They’re stacking up so I bought milk to use them. One tasted terrible this morning. May move on to another container tomorrow. Got home and M was watching a crime show, White Collar. Later watched some Braves and basketball. Did a lot of cleaning, with Ceil’s friend Dawn arriving on Friday.

After Anna got home Monday night she met Christian at the Bethlehem Chickfila halfway between Athens and Snellville. This summer Christian is supervising the summer youth/college interns at Grace Snellville Church. Thursday night Anna attended an event at the church in Snellville.

Thursday: left work around 5:15. Stopped by Chickfila to cash in a sandwich coupon. Gassed up the Corolla. At home I got a lot done. M had cleaned up in the kitchen. I emptied the dishwasher and loaded it again. Straighten all the countertops. Cleaned up the garage. Straightened up the living room. In both the living and dining room you could barely walk but I cleared all that up. Got everything off the steps. Cleared the hallway. Threw away a lot of stuff. Ate a tiny pasta dish that had been in the freezer a long time. Cleared off the mantle and fireplace hearth. Took everything off that had been piled on chairs. Pulled on the lawnmower literally a hundred times but never could get it started. Did all that other stuff but I’ll be in trouble for not cutting the grass.

Did something bad on D-Day. Watched a movie that had Jane Fonda in it: Book Club. Star studded cast paired off into four couples: Hanoi Jane Fonda and Don “Miami Vice” Johnson, Mary “Elf” Steenburgen and “Coach” Craig T Nelson, Diane “Annie Hall” Keaton and Andy “Finding Middleton” Garcia, and Candice “Murphy Brown” Bergen and Richard “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” Dreyfuss.

Friday morning I cleaned and straightened upstairs. Hung up clothes, made the bed, cleaned the bathroom, put away shoes and other items, started a load of laundry, unloaded the dishwasher. Been a long time since the house has been so straight.

Lunch meeting catered by Jason’s Deli, with a Dairy Queen chocolate chip cookie dough Blizzard cake for dessert. Work has been turned a little upside down with this no overtime thing, plus a new daily conference call has been added at 9 am after our 8:30 huddle. I certainly don’t need to be the guy with the most overtime.

Saturday night we’re having a big dinner. The entire fam will be there: Dawn, Ceil, W&MC (& dog Okie), Matthew, and Anna and her boyfriend Christian. And Barney.

Dealing With Anger

Years ago I remember eating a meal over at the Normans house. Young Will and the Norman boys were running around everywhere, stressing me out. I was wanting to scold Will for being such a terror. Steve and Becky were just sitting back, enjoying the chaos.  It was then I realized that not everyone was like me. Other parents still disciplined their children, but did so without getting angry.

Over the years I saw this over and over. Very few were like me, even if they grew up in an abusive household. Instead of anger and yelling I saw love and acceptance.

All my life I’ve sat in churches listening to sermons by some of the greatest preachers in the world. Billy Graham. Ravi Zacharias. Charles Stanley. Andy Stanley. Louie Giglio. Bryant Wright. Bob Marsh. David Platt. Frances Chan. Bob Ott. Tony Campolo. Michael Youssef. John Piper. Brene Brown. John MacArthur. Bill Hybels. Rick Warren. Jim Cymbala. Tony Evans. And others. But listening to great preachers does not make me more like Jesus.

All preached the need to be more like Jesus Christ. I understand that to mean to be like Christ in everything I do, every day – not just when I am in church. To love others and put them ahead of myself. There are verses in the Bible that say these very things. To love my enemies. To love my wife more than myself, and to meet her every need.

These words and commands of Jesus come not with exceptions. I am to love even when I don’t feel like it. To do otherwise is sin. God’s Spirit wants to inhabit my mind and help me live this life, but I must make the effort to cast aside my own selfish desires not just when it is easy, but also when it’s hard, when I’m angered and want to act selfishly.

In dealing with people I’ve learned that most are not like me. God created everyone different, whether I like it or not. Some differences may annoy me. God wants me to love and accept everyone regardless of our differences.

Like being on time. Over the years its been ingrained in me to arrive places early. I’ve constantly got my eye on the clock. When I am running late I get all tensed up and on edge. I feel pressure on myself and am angered. Why? Because I don’t want to let the person down I am going to see, be it a doctor’s appointment or work or church service or dinner reservation or ball game or an evening with friends. Most could care less and not even notice if I’m five minutes late. These days more than ever people can be 30 minutes late and think nothing of it.

Many people in my life are not that way. Most, in fact. Our idea of how early we should leave is completely different. They could care less. I may feel anger growing inside me, making me want to lash out and yell at the slowpokes. In these cases I am the one at fault. My relationship with these people is more important than leaving on time. I have to ask God to help me put away my anger.

When I grow angry and lash out at someone, it makes that person – and everyone else around me – not want to be around me any more. I may be right about something, but it’s still wrong for me to belittle and yell at that person. When people don’t include me in things, when they don’t call me on the phone or text me, often it’s because they don’t want to risk invoking my anger again.

Over the years there have been a time or three when my anger swelled up and boiled over at work. Not sure, but these instances may have cost me in raises and promotions. That very thing recently happened at another of our locations: an employee who over the years treated coworkers throughout the Southeast rudely had been counseled and warned about his bad behavior. When the manager’s position came open this guy was considered but not only passed over, but he was eventually fired for his continued unacceptable behavior.

Many times it’s all I can do to not be angry. It’s a daily battle that’s effected many relationships. If possible, it’s better to walk away than to be around what’s making you angry. Get your mind on something else. Dealing with anger only gets harder with age. It’s wrong. Only with God’s help can I love.

If you share my problem, I pray you ask God to help you change, and take steps in that direction. Think about the legacy you’re leaving, what people will think of you when you’re gone.

THE POINT: No one deserves to be yelled at. Care about others more than yourself. Let me know if I can help.

Rating the ACC Logos

Fans rated the ACC logos, but they got it wrong. Here are the correct rankings. A good logo is simple and stylized and doesn’t change every few years. Team success can make a logo look better. You should be able to make out a helmet logo from the stands.

Clemson: simple and recognizable, with the trademark cleft at the bottom. Would look good even if Clemson lost every game. Also like the old school block C often worn on caps. Great uniforms as well.

Miami: not much better than the legendary U. Too much black in the uniforms.

North Carolina: simple with a unique color. I also like the old UNC logo and Tarheel logo. Too much black in the uniforms.

Virginia: not a bad logo. Better without the swashbuckling Cavalier dude.

FSU: semi-busy but good due to longevity and team success. Too much black in the uniforms these days. Tomahawk on the helmet also cool. Love to get those liberals all riled up.

Pitt: nice that the logo hasn’t changed (actually it did but they got smart and switched back). Colors also unique and nice.

Georgia Tech: GT logo is simple. Hate the logo with cartoon Buzz. The old logo T with the old yellow jacket is good as well.

Virginia Tech: the VT isn’t too bad, but is still on the plain side. Points off for being burgundy. But several other old-school logos they’ve drug out recently have also been cool.

Duke: logo looks decent with the basketball in the middle. Iconic but could be improved. Too much black in the uniforms these days.

Syracuse: you’d think such a legendary school could do better than a block S. Put the Orangeman on an alternate helmet.

Louisville: the cardinal is stationary. Just sitting there. Should project forward motion. Better than the inexplicable Olde English L you see on the sidelines. Too much black in the uniforms.

NC State: iconic but hard to read. Drop the outlines. Get rid of the black. Wolf logo is cool.

Boston College: too complicated. Give me the BC or the eagle, not both. Looks like a logo for a Division 2 school, or a minor league baseball team.

Wake Forest manages to make WF look bad. Give me the old WF flying wing logo.

Goldberg and his brother were on a recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, showing off their grandmother’s red El Dorado. When Jay drove the car with an expert in the passenger seat, Goldberg and his brother squeezed in the back. Ceil wasn’t happy I had chose to watch the car show, but when she started watched the banter between Jay and the car owners, she started to like it.

One episode was filmed here in Atlanta, at the Varsity with the huge station wagon from the Chevy Chase movie Vacation. They filmed in the elevated lot. Should’ve parked in the curb service area.

Ceil’s mom’s meniscus surgery went well and they were back home after a long day.

Stayed at work doing stuff till six. Made a couple of stops on the way home: Chickfila and unloaded some giveaways at Goodwill. Had a package at our door but had to take it to a neighbor.

Fried got hit with a comebacker. Second time that’s happened. Not his best night but you can’t be lights out every time you pitch. Tuki and the bullpen came in and threw shutout innings, and the offense came back.

The Nagurski Era

To celebrate the NFL’s 100th season the Bears will be wearing 1936 Bronko Nagurski era uniforms. Not sure if all the sleeve stripes will show on the skin tight game jerseys though. On Friday the Bears will unveil the uniforms but local retailers accidentally put the jerseys out on the showroom floor a week early. Will love the striped socks.

Speaking of striped socks, Uni Watch is having get-togethers around the world to celebrate the blog’s 20th anniversary. I’ll cove the June 29 event at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta. Planning on wearing shorts with my navy Braves striped socks. Perhaps Chuck Taylors in honor of creator Paul Lukas. Probably my Braves Uecker jersey and matching Boston cap.

Monday: left work at six and cashed in a milkshake coupon at Chickfila on the way home. Chocolate. That filled me up so I only ate a few chips and peanuts. Later I microwaved three little taquitos that had been sitting in the freezer.

Ceil left for SC yesterday and was at the store when Jeopardy Jonathan lost to the Chicago librarian. I also watched a MASH, Seinfeld, The Neighborhood, and an interesting time travel movie starring the hunk for This Is Us, titled “Another Time.”

Interesting discussion on The Neighborhood after the son brought home a non-Christian girlfriend, between the son and his mother. The son agreed that it wasn’t the right thing to do.

Anna made it back to Athens yesterday evening.

A customer used our metal to make a huge tomahawk/guitar to promote voting Braves into the All-Star Game in Cleveland, home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Another Series Win

Braves reliever Luke Jackson has pitched in 25 games. Here’s his stats from his last 24: 1.63 ERA, 27-2/3 inn pitched 5 runs 6 BB 41 strikeouts .131 opp avg

Pitchers pitching well but not getting the win. Wonder how many more wins Maddux would’ve had. But know what? Yesterday Teheran was awarded a Quality Start.

Soroka won another game. Back when Fernando Valenzuela came into the league he was a media sensation, but Soroka’s run has been more outstanding. If Soroka were pitching in NYC or LA he would’ve already been on the cover of Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine.
Same with rookie of the month Austin Riley, whose tear has been more sensational than anything Aaron Judge ever did. Plus Riley signed autographs for the kids before games, and visits sick kids in the hospital. In Gwinnett he hung out with season ticket holders before games.

Dansby is maturing as a hitter. On pace for 33 home runs. Showing everyone why he was the number one overall draft pick, and why he made it to the majors a couple of years ahead of schedule. Must be the striped socks. And even before this season so many social media experts were calling for Swanson to be traded. Freddie is on pace for over 40 home runs.
Another bee delay - this time in San Diego.

News flash: the reigning Jeopardy champ lost tonight.
Anna made it back to Georgia this evening.

Semi-busy weekend. Friday night Ceil made meatballs. Saturday morning small group. We got company coming in next Friday, so we were cleaning up the rest of the day. Plus dishes and laundry. Filled my car with stuff for Goodwill.

Saturday night we went over to a friends house. Cooked ribs on the grill, which fell off the bone. Baked beans. Raw vegetables and dip.  Chips and salsa. Kale salad. Ceil made her hot potato salad. Cobbler with ice cream for dessert. Wine and beer. Played a fun game called “Night of the Werewolf.” After a slow start I tied for first place.

Sunday School and worship. Grilled vegetables and rice for lunch, plus fresh fruit. Went for a haircut, and gassed up Ceil’s car.  Watched some Braves and the end of the Memorial golf. Cleared out emails. Researched credit cards and cable TV options. Cheese quesadillas for supper. Kept up with the basketball game.

NBA: would be nice if Toronto could put up a little fight. Think it was expected that the Warriors would win game one. If the Raptors were going to win one, you’d think it would be at home.

The Grizz Gaming sticker…gotta find a place of honor for it. Not long ago I bought a Gwinnett Stripers sticker. Was thinking about putting it on my car but the car is looking good with no stickers on it. If I were driving M’s Jeep I’d slap both stickers on there real quick.

The Brewers traveled all wearing Air Uecker t-shirts. Available at www.moteefe.com (grey XXL).

Sibling rivalry is surely not Christian behavior, but at that young age what child is a mature Christian? Shoot, I still struggle thinking and acting as I should.

President Trump made a last minute appearance at McLean Bible Church on the way to the golf course, where David Platt prayed over him. In late April Platt led the worldwide Secret Church we had attended. As usual, various Christians took to social media to argue over the tiniest details of the event.

Last Day on the Road

Something tells me the girls ate a little more than just PB&Js.

Today the girls ran into a UGA group they knew.

W&MC attended their first Atlanta United game Saturday night,
with Thomas and Holly.
Louder than a UGA game. Or Clemson.
We went over to Steve & Sarah's house for ribs and games.
Night of the Werewolf.
Looks like I'm not the only one who goes around taking photos of obscure baseball jerseys.
If rookie pitcher Mike Soroka played in New York or LA he would be a media sensation. Forget Fernandomania - Sorokamania would be on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
...and he signs autographs!
