Dad Sneakers

Sunday after worship we ran into David Hall and Margaret Dudley. Back in March I’d noticed Margaret’s husband’s good-looking sneakers, so I got to ask him about them. Cole Haan. Since I had sold a pair of black sneakers, I had taken a picture of the 12 different pairs of black sneakers with white soles in my closet.

Last night I looked up the Cole Haan sneakers. They were going off sale, so I bought them that night. As usual I probably jumped the gun and made a snap purchase. They were a great price for Cole Haans, but is that really where I am in my life right now – a guy who wears Cole Haans instead of Nikes or Hokas? At work both Eric and Shane proudly wear Cole Haans., and they're younger than me. I saw where Ron Gant likes Cole Haans, but he’s an old guy as well. These Zerogrands look good on David Bailey, but will I love them on me? They’ll replace the “dressy” adidas Premieres I had been wearing as a dress up sneaker. The Premiere isn’t super comfortable. We’ll see.

Drew Kelly and the Wall Street Journal say the old white dad sneaker is a hot commodity with the younger set. Old white guys are rejoicing, but not so fast. What us old guys don’t realize is that when a young hipster wears dad shoes it looks cool. When an old guy wears them, he just looks like an old guy.

I realized this when I saw an old guy at a baseball game, wearing a super cool throwback cap and jersey. Great merchandise, but on him he still looked like an old guy.

VERN LAW   [SABR Bio] was the first native of Idaho to receive a Hall of Fame vote. He received votes from 1973-1979, but never more than 2.4%. Law won the Cy Young Award in 1960 when Pittsburg’s record was 95-59. The last time the Pirates won more than 90 games was also the last time they had won the NL flag (1927), when they were 94-60. Only Warren Spahn surrendered more home runs to Willie Mays (18) than Law did (15).

DENISON: due to financial volatility such as the ongoing banking crisis, older adults are entering a “retirement minefield.” People who use social media for 2 hours or more daily are more than twice as likely to report feeling isolated than those who are on such apps for less than 30 minutes a day. according to the Wall Street Journal. Loneliness increases the risk of premature death nearly 30% and elevates risk of stroke, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and dementia. This is why, as we noted yesterday, a daily, transforming relationship with Jesus is so vital. Christ feeds our souls, strengthens our mental health, and empowers our cultural impact.
