On Sabbath Rest, and Loaves & Fishes

Washing the car, or even cutting the grass, is so satisfying and restorative for the mind and soul. I consider it suitable for Sabbath rest. I don’t think I’m stretching God’s word, am I? When I was finished I had such a feeling of accomplishment that when I went back inside and plopped back on the couch the rest of my rest was all the better.

Sunday I had on sneakers and socks while I was cleaning out the garage. Pulled out the hose and hooked it up, and transitioned to wash the car. Was halfway through and realized my shoes were wet. My Crocs were nearby so I quickly pulled off my socks and shoes and put on my Crocs – perfect shoes for washing cars. But I did get bit on the top of my foot by an ant.

Lately pretty much whatever shoes I wear to work (almost always sneakers) when I get home I take off my shoes and socks, now that its warmer. When I go outside, I slide on my Crocs. But during winter I keep on both socks and shoes.

Last night for supper Ceil opened a can of English peas. She likes to have them at least once a month or so. Not my favorite, but I got some to improve the picture I take each night of my dinner plate. Ceil ate some as well. But when I went to put up the leftovers, it seemed like we still had more than a can’s worth of English peas left over. English peas are like loaves and fishes – there’s more left over than when we started!

Now there are shoes with what I call “false backs” that allow you to slip them on without having to stretch down or you’re your knee so much. Tony Romo advertises them for Sketchers.

Seems like stores aren’t open for as many hours as they used to. Guess it has to due with a lack of employees. Not sure where all the workers went. Are they still on unemployment? Not sure. Stores used to open at ten and stay open til 9 or 10 at night. Now they close at 6 or 7 or 8. Even restaurants aren’t staying open as late, including fast food. Speaking of workers, we have a bunch of open job positions were are trying to fill, both in the office and in the plant. Working to run our machines 24/7, which makes getting things cut a lot easier.  We still have a long way to go.  Had three candidates in the office at the same time this morning interviewing for jobs.

ARTICLE: interesting info on Mets manager Buck Showalter, who wears older more classic team jackets, more to his liking than the current mass-produced merchandise. He even has the equipment manager searching eBay and thrift stores for old school Mets garments for Buck to wear. Not to mention Buck's appearance on Seinfeld. My kind of guys.

In a related note, the Cardinals manager recently wore his actual uniform jersey in a game instead of his usual hoodie / jacket – to honor the beat reporter who passed away over the weekend. Nice touch. Glad that Snit usually wears his jersey unless it’s cold (he’s no fool, he knows how to keep warm).

Monday: made it to 5:30 at work. Traffic was bad going home so I took Spaulding through  north Dunwoody. We sat down to eat before 7 pm, which is rare. Bones chicken breasts in a sauce over rice, with grilled broccoli and squash, and the aforementioned English peas. Matthew’s cinnamon coffee cake for dessert.

Watched Jeopardy and Doctor Cha last night. Up early this morning to lift weights.

LEFTY GROVE [SABR Bio] has the highest career WAR for any Hall of Famer in the Modern Era who was born east of the Mississippi River: 113.3, trailing only Walter Johnson (152.4) and Alexander (116.2) https://stathead.com/tiny/vZIhun. Grove born in Maryland, Johnson in Nebraska, Alexander in Kansas. Grove was the first pitcher to lead the AL in walks and strikeouts in the same season. In his rookie season (1925) he struck out 116 with 131 walks. He is the only Red Sox pitcher to hit a grand slam in a game he lost. Grove hit George Blaeholder’s pitch over the fence in Shibe Park on 27-Jul-1935. Three other Boston pitchers have hit grand slams: Babe Ruth on 20-May-1919, Wes Ferrell on 12-Aug-1936(1), and Ellis Kinder on 06-Aug-1950(1) – all in games they won.
