LSU's Greatest Athlete?

LSU has won 49 national championships in various mens and women’s sports. Does this make the recent women’s basketball championship the greatest? Why? Shaq recently decreed Angel Reese to be the greatest athlete in school history. What? Angel has only played one season at LSU, after spending her first two years at Maryland.

She might be a better player than Shaq was in college (not really), but she’d be doing good to crack the top ten best athletes at LSU.

G.FG%.RB.BLK.PTS

83 .438 05.3 X.X 44.2 Maravich

64 .474 03.0 0.1 29.0 Abdul-Rauf

72 .476 14.4 X.X 27.4 Pettit

90 .610 13.5 4.6 21.6 Shaq

83 .510 11.9 1.3 18.7 Angel

Who is the greatest athlete in LSU history? There have been many greats, going back decades. After over 50 years Pete Maravich’s scoring average has yet to be equaled. Billy Cannon is still a legend. Joe Burrow won the Heisman and a national championship. The Honey Badger. Leonard Fournette. Lolo Jones competed in both the summer and winter Olympics. A big kid named Shaquille O’Neal played a little basketball inside The Maravich Center. So did Chris Jackson, later renamed Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. And these were just the ones on the tip of my tongue. Others:

Baseball: Alvin Dark. Joe Adcock. Ben McDonald.

Football: Steve Van Buren. Y.A. Tittle. Jim Taylor. Billy Cannon. Tommy Casanova. Bert Jones.

My coworker helped her daughter move out to Salt Lake City last week. Two thousand miles, 32 hours. They took 20 west, spending nights west of Little Rock and Amarillo, where they ate at the Big Texan Steakhouse. Gotta put that tourist trap on my bucket list. It was featured in the Seth Rogan Barbra Streisand movie The Guilt Trip.

Finally found a cap that’s similar to the old Atlanta Crackers cap. Just not similar enough. Last thing I need - another old guy cap.

Will #1 QB recruit Dylan Raiola sigh with UGA? GT was on his list, though nothing in the article about it. But the kid has already changed his mind twice, and could be the type to transfer if he doesn’t get his way.

The past few years I would compile and publish a list of bobblehead giveaways every month. I’m still got my list this year, but it is a lot shorter because I haven’t really looked up all the team’s promotional schedules. I did trade my plastic talking Steve Irwin bobblehead for a Zim Bear.

The Knicks always seem to have a big wide body white guy on their team. I was watching him the other night.

Back during covid I would wash my hands and sing “Happy Birthday” like Marilyn Monroe did, and the man’s room would clear out quickly.

A&C went to another Braves game last night.

C.S. Lewis: "If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road . . . going back is the quickest way on."

Brother Geoffrey Tristam of the Society of St. John the Evangelist in Boston writes: “Until we acknowledge our need for God, we will never experience the utter joy of being forgiven, healed, restored, and empowered. Once we have experienced that grace, there’s no going back to a life where we trust in our own power and strength. Once we have known God’s hands upholding us and strengthening us, nothing else will do.”

RANDY JOHNSON [SABR Bio] was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 4th round of the 1982 Amateur Draft from Livermore High (CA). He decided on college and attended USC. He was later drafted by the Expos. Like me, he bats right, throws left. Johnson and Mark McGwire both played for USC under hall of fame coach Rod Dedeaux. Johnson’s first Immaculate Inning was the bottom of the 6th on 02-Sep-1998 versus Houston He did it again three years later in the 6th inning on 23-Aug-2001 against Pittsburgh.
