UGA put up 63 on pesky Murray State. Instead of staying in to pad his stats, UGA QB Jake Fromm was pulled before halftime. Zeus, Swift, Cook, and Herrien all looked good. Great catch by WR Perkins. If I had a nickel for every time a sideline reporter told 57 year-old Herschel Walker “looks like you could still play!”
Vince Dooley was being interviewed when a UGA CB slipped covering the receiver, who raced down the field to tie the game at seven. “Goodness!” the coach exclaimed “I’ve got to get out of here!” Later Vince discussed obscure Eastern European wars.
After taking a 14-3 lead into halftime, the Jackets hung on to win 14-10 – forcing a fumble on a late game goal line stand. The South Florida RB appears to break the plane of the goal line. All three GT QB’s saw action. Johnson (above) got the start and did okay. Tobias Oliver returned the opening kickoff. Graham saw the least action, which was disappointing.
Despite the previously announced “whiteout” at Grant Field, head coach Geoff Collins dressed in all navy. Perhaps he took the lead from the institute’s elder alumni, who’ve been wearing the same Tech gear for decades, and can’t comprehend why any Tech fan would wear white to games. Unlike Collins, I'll wait until fall is in the air to break out my vests.
Geoff Collins 2019 game day cap tracker:
Game 1 pregame: white 404.
Game 1 game: black with gold T.
Game 2 game: navy GT
Clemson beat Texas A&M 24-10, though the Aggies had to call timeouts at the end of the game to finally score a touchdown. QB Trevor Lawrence took a beating and threw another interception, but led the Tigers to the win with a gritty performance. Saw one list where he’d fallen from Heisman Hopeful to honorable mention.
After I’d praised him last week, Clemson’s kicker pushed his first field goal try wide right. RB Travis Etie nne had wanted to catch more passes this year and he has, but throwing him swing passes takes away from both Clemson’s downfield passing game AND Etienne’s running game. You heard it here first.
Last week A&M QB Kellen Mond was asked if he ranked among the best SEC QB’s. Mond replied yes, he was. Humble? Not in the least. Perhaps he was channeling inner confidence. How do you think Fromm or Tua would respond? Then Mond went out and missed receivers and looked nothing like an elite QB. His QB rating plummeted from 12th in the nation to 38th. Doubtful A&M will be able to compete against LSU and Bama with Mond at the helm.
Michigan edged Army in OT. Another year the experts ranked Michigan too high. Sure Army is good, but a top ten team should be able to handle a lesser opponent.
UNC beat Miami. The Heels are now in the driver’s seat to win their division. Canes transfer QB Tate Martell has been moved to receiver.
Syracuse got killed by Maryland. This coming Saturday night Clemson travels to Syracuse for an ACC matchup.
LSU beat Texas, ending the Longhorns win streak, knocking them out of the top ten, dashing the Heisman hopes of QB Sam Ellinger, and placed their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Before the game the Horns tried to steal LSU’s “DBU” moniker, only to have three Bayou Bengal receivers go for over 100 yards in receivers – the first time that’s happened in school history.
Someone had compared Ellinger to Tim Tebow, but the pesky Texas QB will need multiple national championships, top three team finishes, and Heisman finishes to even come close to Mr. Tebow’s career.
Tennessee lost to BYU. On 4th & one, new UT offensive coordinator Jim Chaney (formerly of UGA) called a slow developing wide receiver sweep. Gonna be a long year.
FSU lost. 0-2. Gonna be a long year. At least they have a talented dual threat QB the announcers can talk about before the game. They always seem to leave out how his QB rating is 73rd in the nation.
SC rebounded to beat mighty Coastal Carolina, evening the Gamecocks record at 1-1. Darius Rucker predicted a 14-1 record and national championship, after tweeting “The season is over” after last week’s loss. Fans called for the backup QB to be awarded the Heisman Trophy. Last week head coach Will Muschamp was on the hot seat. Perhaps this week he’ll receive a contract extension.
Ohio State beat Cincinnati 45-0. The Bearcats weren’t able to stop the Buckeye run or pass.
Mizzou transfer QB Kelly Bryant was not able to finish the third quarter due to the heat.
Falcons turned the ball over at least three times, and got routed in Minnesota. Fans had given up on the team early in the first quarter. The problem: not Matt Ryan. Not sure yet about the new offensive coordinator. Defense didn’t help. First round draft pick, the center, may be out for the season with a broke foot.
Forty-two year old Tom Brady looked sharp, leading the Pats on a rout of the Steelers.
Young dual threat Heisman winner Kyler Murray looked good in his debut, as did former Heisman winner Lamar Jackson. The Ravens 59-10 dismantling of the Dolphins was the first time a NFL game ended with that particular score.
Poor Jacksonville. They finally get a decent QB (Nick Foles) and he breaks his clavicle. Out for the year.
After an off-season of the media hyping the Browns as a Super Bowl contenders, Cleveland looked like one year wonders in their loss to Tennessee. Was the media wrong again?
