Dawgs Win SEC

UGA capitalized on several big plays to beat LSU for the SEC Championship, by a score of 50-30. It was the second-most points the Dawgs had scored all season.

QB Stetson Bennett was named MVP in his third straight playoff game. He has led the top-ranked Bulldogs to two straight undefeated regular seasons and a national championship. Bennett finished the regular season ranked 7th in the nation in QBR. No other player in the country has a comparable resume, yet Stetson is receiving little consideration for the Heisman Trophy.

After hanging out with Shivonne's with Will and Matthew to watch the US get drummed out of the World Cup, Anna and Caleb headed the mile east to attend the game.

After QB DJU failed to gain a first down on Clemson's first two possessions, Dabo replaced him with Cade Klubnik. The freshman led the Tigers to four first half scores in four possessions, and a 24-10 halftime lead. He was 10-11, the one incompletion coming on a dropped pass. The Tigers only faced one third down, and Klubnik ran for 16 yards for a first down. Maybe I'm not the most knowledgeable football fan in the world, but I have been watching the sport for over 55 years. Klubnik should've replaced DJ some time ago.

These days so many companies (like mine, and my company’s vendors and customers) are having such a hard time finding workers. Nucor has a 4-day work week – with 12 hour shifts. Pretty sure they work 4 days then are off 4 days, but they rotate between day shifts and night shifts. I may be an old fogey, but if people only work four days, then when they are off and want to go do something, who will be working to serve them? Someone has to be working on Friday Saturday and Sunday.

Say a factory makes steel tubing. They have three tube mills.  They have so many orders for tubing that they're constantly juggling orders in an effort to satisfy customers, because they don’t have the workers to run the tube mills. They’ve been discussing working a four-day week, which would mean they wouldn't be producing tube on Fridays. It would also mean they wouldn't be shipping to customers on Fridays. They would need to hire lots more workers to be able to go down to a 4-day work week. While they have the business to do this, there simply aren’t enough available workers willing to do the nasty work. It’s cold in the winter and hot in the summer. You get filthy, as the tubes come off the mill covered in coolant.

A buzzword in business these days is lean engineering. It means to operate with as few employees as possible. It flies in the face of a 4-day work week simply because there aren’t enough workers to get the work done. But what do I know? I'm just a mere worker bee.

MICKEY LOLICH  [SABR Biowas the last American League pitcher in the twentieth century to lose more than 20 games in a season. Lolich’s record in 1974 was 16-21. He he led the AL in losses and led the majors in ER (142) & HR (38) allowed. This century, he has only been matched by Detroit’s  Mike Maroth, who took 21 of the team’s 119 Losses in 2003. Carl Yastrzemski took Lolich deep on  25-Jul-1974 for the 300th of his career 452 home runs. Yaz attended the University of Notre Dame before joining the Red Sox. Cap Anson attended Notre Dame, but passed away in 1922. After Lolich beat Whitey Ford in a pitchers’ duel, Ford snapped, “I’m so sick and tired of guys who say I was their hero coming up here and beating me.” Lolich beat Ford on 12-Apr-1966 on Opening Day in Yankee Stadium.

ALVIN DARK  [SABR Bioplayed for Philadelphia in 1960. Dark was the MLB Rookie of the Year in 1948. The Braves moved two times after that, to Milwaukee in 1953 and to Atlanta in 1966. Dark played for the NYG from 1950-1956 then managed the SFG from 1961-1964. He played for the  Boston Braves in 1946, 1948, 1949 and for the Milwaukee Braves in 1960He is the only person ever to pitch in the major leagues then manage a team in each league to the World Series. Dark pitched one inning on 27-Sep-1953. He  gave up two runs for a career ERA of 18.00. Dark’s pitching performance was not of the usual type: instead of simply mopping up in a blow-out game as is the usual occurrence for a having a position player on the mound, Dark was the starting pitcher in a season-ending game between two second-division clubs playing out the string. Dark led the Giants to the World Series in 1962 and won the World Series with Oakland in 1974.
