“All Truly Great Thoughts Are Conceived While Walking” – Friedrich Nietzsche. This was a quote from the book that I’m listening to: “Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World” by Cal Newport, the bestselling author of Deep Work. Read this in an effort to better unplug, so I don’t spend my retirement glued to my phone. Newport addressed the value of face to face relations for exceeds those interactions on social media, and extols the need for time spent in solitude, unplugged from devices. In today’s world solitude has just about become a thing of the past. Solitude helps the brain work out the problems we face. Newport finds walking helps him sort out work and personal issues.
I like Marty Smith, him and his partner Ryan McGee. Good down to earth, Southern, good old boys. I don’t get to listen to them much. I liked Marty’s response to the yahoos who didn’t like him wearing Air Jordans at the Masters.
Ever see that commercial about the people that are turning into their parents? They have a life coach that’s constantly trying to stop them from oversharing and talking too much. I’m constantly fighting the urge to be like them, of telling stories that people who aren’t my close friends don’t want to hear. I have one coworker who is way worse than me. Another coworker close to my age tells a lot of stories, but does a great job in asking his coworkers questions about what’s going on with them. He does tend to repeat “back in the day” stories, but I rarely see coworkers rolling their eyes. He’s a good guy.
Wednesday: busy day at work for me. As the afternoon progressed I was feeling worse and worse. Achy and hot with a fever. Instead of attending small group in person, I went home and logged in to the meeting on line. Afterwards I went to bed. Felt a little better on Thursday morning, but not 100%.
Quiet Thursday evening. Ceil cooked the whole time. I crashed on the couch. Chicken salad for supper. Went to bed at 930. Up early Friday morning to hit the gym. Wearing my light blue Braves pullover to see if that will break the losing streak.
JFBC had a student service at noon today, and a regular service at 6 pm. Ceil is going to the 6 pm service at JFBC. I have so much work and I’m not feeling great and I split mayo on my shirt at lunch (Wendys free free Friday). This way I won’t have to rush. Ceil didn’t want to stick around for the social afterwards. I’m still not feeling 100%. Got my cough drops ready in case I have to talk much. I have a cough. Shouldn’t have gone to the gym this AM. Got on the treadmill and after a few minutes I realized how weak I was. Stuck it out for my normal amount.
Last night Mary-Clayton let the girls watch The Sound of Music for the first time. They were transfixed.
NORM CASH [SABR Bio] had the major leagues' single-season highest batting average in the 1960s. He hit .361 for Detroit in 1961. He is the only left-handed batter to hit more than 40 home runs in a season in Tigers history, with 41 in 1961. He was driving a tractor on his family’s farm by the age of ten. Cash was born during the Great Depression, on 10-Nov-1934. His family owned 250 acres near Justiceburg, Texas, growing mostly cotton.
In a seven year stretch, Fred Lynn had home run totals of 21 22 23 23 23 23 25.
Denison: two-thirds of all US adults say they have made a personal commitment to Jesus that is still important in their life today, a 12% increase in the last 4 years. Researchers say this “may be the clearest indication of meaningful spiritual renewal in the United States.” The Bible Society in the UK reports 2 million more people in Great Britain attended church in 2024 than in 2018. Here's an especially encouraging fact: Young adults in both countries are fueling the increase. This is in part the result of the anxiety and depression so many are feeling as they grow increasingly pessimistic about their future. The greater our challenges, the more we recognize our need for a Power greater than ourselves.
