Good Friday

My favorite Easter hymn is “Christ the Lord is Risen Today”. It’s been on my mind several days when I’m backing my car out of the driveway in the morning. Since it is a hymn of great rejoicing and praise, instead of singing “alleluia” at the end of each line I replace it with “fa la la la la la la lei lu yah”. Sorry.

1 Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!

Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!

2 Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!

Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!

Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia!

Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!

3 Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia!

Where's thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!

4 Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!

Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!

Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia!

Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

5 Hail the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia!

Praise to thee by both be given, Alleluia!

Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia!

Hail the Resurrection, thou, Alleluia!

6 King of glory, soul of bliss, Alleluia!

Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!

Thee to know, thy power to prove, Alleluia!

Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!

JFBC members were fasting from 7 pm Wednesday to 7 pm Friday night. The fast was broken with communion during the 6 pm Good Friday service. Afterward there was a dinner on the grounds. We didn’t have snacks at our Wednesday night small group.

JFBC is praying and fasting about building a new worship center and combining the traditional and contemporary services. They want to be sure there’s space for all these young families with kids.

By having a building campaign that might give these families a reason to stay at JFBC, kind of like feeling like they have a stake in the church. Because just up the road 3 miles North Point is building East Cobb Church on the corner of Johnsons Ferry and Shallowford. For sure that place will be run efficiently, and young families will flock there. Should be an interesting few years.

JFBC is recruiting for new deacons. They list all the qualifications and then say you can only nominate 50 men per year. I never nominate anyone, because I don’t know 50 guys to nominate. No women. JFBC does have an Elder Board as well. It was Bryant Wright’s idea a long time ago. At this point I don’t want to be a deacon again. Still waiting on Ceil to fill out her paperwork so we can become members of JFBC.

Before I was a deacon at SPdL, I was first on the “Service Council” – some called them “Junior Deacons”. I was still single at the time. I think Drew Kelly and Scott Rees were on there with me, driving shuttle busses, greeting at the North Bridge, etc. Finally made deacon after I got married. I always liked that term – Advisory Council. But when I got on Advisory Council, they changed the name to Service Council. I think they thought Advisory Council sounded more high-faluting than the Deacon Board did!

Was in Sanctuary Choir for a few years. I think I was, at least. Was also an “actor” in several Easter and Christmas productions, like Living Pictures, etc. I had the part of the disciple Thomas, sitting next to Craig McKenzie (Jesus).

I don’t remember Peachtree Presbyterian when it was on Peachtree Road, but I knew that fact. At Marsh’s funeral pretty much everything there said Peachtree Church. I’ll always call it Peachtree Presbyterian from the old days. My grandmother was an inaugural member. I remember going there a few times as a boy. Liked the blocks that they had. I think Caleb’s dad grew up there at Peachtree Presbyterian.
