Sunday night around 730 a tree fell in our back yard, away from the house down over the creek. It had been only a matter of time before this tree finally fell, as it had shared its base with another tree that had fallen over a couple of months ago. Couldn’t really see what had happened until the next morning. Now two trees are down in the woods behind our house, and two trees down behind our neighbor’s house. With the steep slope down to the creek, I am not sure how we’ll ever be able to clear them off.

Stamps: Ceil bought a sheet of Goodnight Moon postage stamps, with each stamp a different scene from the popular children’s book. It was always Will’s favorite book. On each page he would point to the mouse.

Sold another pair of shoes, an old pair of Clarks chukka boots. Also a red Braves cap. For what I net from the sales, I’m not sure why I bother. But it’s fun. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

Ceil has bought tickets for the entire family for a Christmas concert at Perimeter Church in Peachtree Corners: Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God. We had gone a few years ago with the Earharts and Broadwells.

I’m trying to make sure I am able to roll over 5 days of vacation to next year. I’ll probably work the three days before Thanksgiving (but play morning golf if the weather cooperates). Will see about how much I will have to work around Christmas. Looks like I will have to burn vacation days on Dec 32 and Jan 2. But our customer will shut down on Dec 18 and won’t reopen until Jan 20, so there won’t be much to do. I have a bunch to clean out and reorganize, and some speeches to write. I’m really not that busy.

At work people make such a big deal about saving a bunch of vacation to December, then after Thanksgiving all you hear them say is “I’ve got 3 more days (then raise their voice and say) AND THEN I’M DONE FOR THE YEAR !!” Sure they’re golf and yardwork and some other stuff, but I never really minded working around Christmas when I didn’t have much other stuff to do. It was slow and quiet and a good time to get caught up on things.

DAVE PARKER [SABR Bio] was nicknamed The Cobra. Cobra snakes are fast, strong and often terrify before they strike. An apt comparison. He was with PIT in 1979 when they beat the Orioles in the World Series, and was with OAK in 1989 when they swept SF. The Home Run Derby, as now staged in association with the All-Star Game, was played for the first time in 1985. Parker took first place.

Article: habits of disciplined people.

1. Keep showing up even when you don’t feel like it.

2. Choose long term rewards over short term comfort.

3. Make mornings productive.

4. Say “no” often and unapologetically.

5. Measure progress, not perfection.

6. Find joy in the monotony – it leads to greatness.

7. Don’t negotiate with yourself. Do what you said you would do.
