Tigers Win Jackets Lose

Saturday: turned on ESPN College GameDay, then NCState @ Clemson. State scored on the last play of the game, making their 56-35 loss to Clemson a little more respectable.

Flipped around to Louisiana Monroe at Texas to see Arch Manning's first start. Two TD's and 2 interceptions in his first half. A better debut than Archie and Peyton, not quite as good as Eli.

Mizzou escaped with an overtime win over Vandy. Georgia Southern only trailed Ole Miss 21-7 at the half.

I got to watch most of the first half of GT / Louisville. I love GT QB H King, but his last second pitch while surrounded by defenders resulted in a Cardinal TD. I had to follow the rest of the game on my phone. Heard GT played well, but made a few more mistakes that led to the Louisville win.

Tech's horrendous navy pants actually contrasted nicely with Louisville's red jerseys. Nice Cardinals helmets, though you couldn't see the nice logo well on TV. Both Louisville and NC State wear ugly nondescript adidas uniforms. Even Tech's unis looked better in comparison.

Tennessee easily handled Oklahoma. UGA has one of the toughest schedules in the country, playing highly ranked Bama, Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, & Clemson. Some think the Dawgs weren't showing their full offense and defense last week in Kentucky.

Nick Saban blasted both Florida and FSU. The Noles finally posted a win this past Saturday, edging Cal 14-9, as did the Gators, who beat up on even lowlier Miss State.

Young Dylan Raiola is receiving backlash for his continued imitations of his idol Pat Mahomes.

Sunday: turned on the Eagles@Saints then Ravens @ Cowboys, but I paid little attention.

Watch much of the Falcons? I saw the first half. Sounds like they were competitive. Some think KC TE Travis Kelce is out of shape. What did he do during the offseason?

Sounds like the Chiefs benefitted from several favorable calls. Ya think?

Sunday: we attended the 8:30 service with our friends who are getting ready to depart for Spain. After Sunday School we stood around chatting for a long time, then we had to stop by Whole Foods. Almost ate at Pappasitos but for a miscommunication. Stir fry for lunch.

Took a nap, washed and folded several loads of laundry, and cut the grass. All that took until almost dark. C made pizza for supper.

Monday: was hurting from the weekend so I skipped the gym. Just heard that Ceil’s friend where we stayed in Jefferson just got over covid, so she can see her grandchildren again. No wonder I felt bad last week.

We never used to secure our house like we do now. We’ve changed to more secure double locks, and added security lights and cameras. The new windows are all more secure than the old ones. Plus Winnie barks whenever someone walks up, alerting all the neighbors. Both our next door neighbors practically live in their open garages, and they see everyone who comes and goes.

Saturday Intown

Friday night I stayed at the office past 6 pm. C was late getting home as well. She fixed leftover spaghetti.

Up early to golf. Got to Candler Park before 645. Rolled my push cart to the 1st tee, then went over to take a picture of the sunrise. When I came back my push cart was gone. It had rolled off the tee and down the hill toward the 8th tee box. Had it not crashed into a big tree stump, it would’ve continued rolling down across the 7th fairway on down to a wooded area. Might not have ever found it in the dark, except for the tracks in the morning dew.

By the time I had retrieved the cart, my playing partner GT had pulled up. We teed off in the twilight.

1.  Decent hybrid off the tee, to the left side of the fairway. Flubbed a 7 iron way across to the right rough. Bad chip, then a better one. Two putt. Double.

2. Decent 7 iron off the tee that hooked into the left rough. Never found it. Okay chip. Two putt for a “bogey “.

3. Skidded my 8 iron off the tee. Got an okay roll down the hill. Chipped to fringe. Chipped onto green. Sank the putt for a bogey.

4. Hit a better than usual 7 iron off the tee. Had cut down on my swing velocity and it helped. The shot didn’t hook as much, and landed in the fairway short of the green. Chipped onto the green and just missed the uphill par putt. Bogey.

5. Real good tee shot to the front fringe. Chip didn’t go as far as I wanted. Could’ve putted it closer but I needed the chipping practice. Good lag putt. Sank the bogey putt.

6. My tee shot sailed right. Flubbed a 5 iron, then skidded my next shot as well. Then I hit a nice long chip shot onto the green. Two putt for a double.

7. Finally hit a good hybrid off the tee. Hit it straight but low. Flubbed my next shot right, then hit a good mulligan, a hybrid off the fairway. They never travel as far as I’d like. But I landed my wedge shot onto the green. Good lag putt on the sloped green. A good “bogey” on a long hole.

8. Hit a good drive. GT hit his even better. My approach was short, but then my next chip hit the flagstick. Sank the putt for a par.

9. Pushed my 3 wood right. Mulligan was better. My chip stayed right. Chipped it close, and sank the bogey putt.

Grabbed breakfast at the Howell Mill Wendy’s. It wasn’t good.

Then over to the Northside Drive Goodwill, where several of us had to wait while the employee slowly put out a basketful of shoes. When he finished, this one jerk quickly grabbed 4 pairs of Nikes. I found a cool Braves shirt and a Clemson tie, that would’ve been perfect at last week’s wedding.

Then over to W&MC’s to sit the girls. Ham & cheese sandwich for lunch. We all napped after taking a short walk on the Atlanta Beltline. Shivonne pointed out the way she walks to school every day. She seems to be liking it more.

Will got off work early, so we all went to Bellwood Coffee for their special evening event, with cocktails and burgers.

I like burgers where the meat and cheese is slightly bigger then the bun. Hate it when you can’t see the burger patty. You would’ve liked those Bellwood burgers (below) – that’s what they were like. One time here in the past year I went thru the drive thru at Wendys and they forgot the meat on my burger. They remembered the lettuce tomato pickles onion ketchup mustard, so at least it wasn’t just the bread. Almost went to Wendys for lunch today but opted for a protein shake instead.

Bellwood was packed inside and outside with young families. Joel Norman was doing great business. His wife Addie was there, and son. Willis Norman was also working the event. David Norman was there, with wife Beth, his daughter, and new baby daughter Lucy - who looks just like a Norman.

MC's brother Thomas was there, with wife Holly. Thomas just accepted a promotion from Google to move to Silicon Valley in California. Holly was wearing the same Nike sneakers that I just got. Also saw Joel's neighbor Mark, who used to be MC's boss. C and I are meeting with Mark on Wednesday. Didn't get home until almost 8 pm.

Trying to watch The Voice, which can be a good show. Talented singers. The interplay between the judges is fun. Snoop adds even more fun. But the last couple of years the show has just gotten too woke. Tonight it was just an anti-Trump campaign ad. I turned it off. They just lost a viewer.

Braves To Ditch City Connects?

RUMOR: the Braves are ditching their Saturday night “City Connect” uniforms at the end of this season.

FACT: get yours now at the team store for 50% off. Never did like that City Connect cap.

MLB allows teams to wear five uniform sets. Here’s how I would dress the Braves, with the following changes:

1. HOME WHITE: large red names, outlined in navy like the block numbers. Jersey number on front left, under the black tomahawk.

2. ROAD GREY: same changes as above, plus change ATLANTA to read BRAVES. Black tomahawk.

3. FRIDAY RED: white names on back. Navy numbers, outlined in white. Simple white piping. Numbers added to the front left. Not my favorite, but its popular with the fans.

4. AARON THROWBACK: royal 1974 jerseys with white pants. No names on back. White block numbers outlines in red. To wear every Saturday, home and road. Flip flop, wearing royal jerseys one year and white the next.

5. POWDER BLUE: jerseys & pants, royal BRAVES & numbers outlined in white, royal untrimmed names on back. Worn as a road alternate plus at home on special occasions. Royal 1982 cap with untrimmed script A in white.

Found a nice old wool Braves home cap at the thrift store this week. I already have two fitted Braves home caps (plus many more Braves caps) so I really didn’t need another. But this cap is decently worn in, old enough that it doesn’t have the New Era logo on the side, made from heavier wool than the more lightweight fabric used today. The front panel is slouched back, so it doesn’t stand straight up like today’s game caps do. Fits down nicely to cover my large head. I’ll probably move this “new” cap into my regular rotation, especially as the days become more chilly.

A couple of years ago I got a new on field home cap made from the lighter fabric, with the large front panel. It’s nice and I should wear it more. My other home cap is a stretch model with a slouched front. Has the Braves wordmark and tomahawk on the back instead of the MLB logo. Might sell that one.

Those long games that go on and on are so hard to watch. You are a bigger fan than me. Not sure when the last time I watched a game from start to finish, other than UGA or Clemson.

Saw where ESPN named Caitlin rookie of the year. Pretty sure her combination of points, rebounds, and assts were the highest for any rookie in WNBA history.

The Young Sheldon spinoff “Georgie & Many’s First Marriage” premieres Thursday Oct 17. Annie Potts reprises her role as Meemaw. Wednesday night Ceil watched the first episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Thursday was the 54th anniversary of its debut.

Finished the Kat Timft book “You Can’t Joke About That”, which got better as I went along. Not bad for an agnostic Libertarian. She ended the book sharing what to do in case you are stopped by the police. Odd, but good advice. Also finished “Recipe For A Perfect Wife”, a chick lit novel by Karma Brown, with some surprising twists.

MY BEEF: Friday morning a white Porshe SUV halted traffic at RaceTrac, backing in right at the front door. Took up one third of one space and 2/3 of another – so whether they were trying to only take up one space or being a hog and taking up two spaces, they did a bad job either way. I was sure to give them the stink eye as I walked past (after changing my route to avoid getting hit by him). Myna Tellenhusen would be proud.

Moon Over Midtown

With a relatively cloudless sunrise, I drove down to play golf at Candler Park early Thursday morning. Arrived just after 645 and teed off just before 7 am. Fellow early bird Gee T arrived earlier than usual, so we were able to play together. For the most part I only played one ball, and didn’t play too terribly – I played just my regular terrible.

1. I hit a pretty good hybrid from the white tee box to the middle of the fairway, and a good 6 iron just short of the elevated green. First chip sailed right, my mulligan skidded just past the green. Good recovery chip back, and I sank the bogey putt, a 10 footer.

2. Hit an 8 iron off the tee, so I wasn’t surprised that it landed far short of the green. At least it was straight. Chipped short of the green, then to the back near the fringe. Two putt for a double.  GT noticed the large full moon in the western sky. Wednesday night I had noticed it rising from the east.

3. Sailed my first tee shot far right, then hit a better mulligan right. Flubbed a chip, then poked one up onto the green. Two putt for another “double”.

4. Decent 7 iron, that tailed off into the left rough. Two poor chips, then the third onto the green. Two putt for “bogey”.

5. Hit a worm burner off the tee that got a decent roll. Chipped to the fringe, but my next chip rolled off the back of the green. Chipped back and then two putted. Triple.

6. Hit a decent hybrid off the tee. Hit it where I aimed: right. I had found one ball on 4 of the first 6 holes, but couldn’t find my tee shot here on six. Flubbed a 5 iron, then hit a good mulligan. Couldn’t find that one either. Dropped a ball and hit a great chip onto the green. Two putt for a “bogey”.

7. Pulled out my driver and sliced two shots into the trees on the right. Hit a low 5 iron that hit a tree, and a slightly better mulligan. Six iron pulled to the left. Nine iron was short of the green. A poor chip followed by only a slightly better mulligan. Long lag putt past the hole. Decent come backer just missed. Snowman.

8. Hit a real good drive off the tee. GT hit one even further. My approach was far too short, but I hut a pretty good mulligan. Two putt for a “par”.

9. Sailed two 3 woods into the trees on the right. Poked a good 5 iron from the rough under the trees, that landed just short of the green. Flubbed the chip. Two putt for a closing double.

Busy busy busy. Had things to do at the office so I stayed past 6 pm. I knew Ceil was over at a friend’s house late in the afternoon, so supper wouldn’t be until 730 or 8 pm. Will wanted one of us to pick up a pair of sneakers he’d bought for Shivonne. I thought C could pick them up while she was out, since it wasn’t that far from where she was. But C was stressed from being too busy so she just went home. Will needed the shoes, so I left the office and drove the 20 minutes past our house to pick them up. Ten bucks on Facebook Marketplace. Good deal.

Made it home by 730 even after stopping by a thrift store (to mentally reward myself for adding this extra chore to my already long day). She started to eat supper without me. Spaghetti. By the time I ate and cleaned up it was almost 830, so I was mentally ready for bed.

Friday: up early to go to the gym. Lunch was free fry Friday at Wendys, since I needed to work late.

The busyness will continue this weekend. C had to stay late  on Friday afternoon at W&MCs, so she hit rush hour traffic on the way home. Saturday we kept the girls all day. That means I’ll have to cut the grass and do my laundry after church on Sunday.

First Bite: City BBQ

Tuesday afternoon I cashed in another Taco Bell dollar taco deal. The bad thing is there’s no way on their app to request a particular pickup time.

Then I continued on Spaulding all the way to Roswell Road to cash in my 25 cent sandwich deal at City BBQ. On the way I downloaded the City BBQ app, just to make the ordering process easier. But that gave me an additional $5 off my first order, and the cashier finagled it so I got the BBQ sandwich, fries, and drink for a dollar. Good deal. I ate there at the restaurant. The various side dishes looked enticing, but $4 only bought you a small cup, so the fries was probably the best choice.

Just outside the restaurant, police and an ambulance attended to a bad two car smashup in the left turn lane of northbound Roswell Road, preventing traffic from turning left onto westbound Abernathy Road, and backing up traffic trickling out of the shopping center. Instead I pulled out and headed east on Abernathy, then made a U turn back westward to East Cobb.

Crashed on the couch for the first time in a week. Ceil was at a dinner at her friend Nancy’s house. I watched the 1988 Lewis Grizzard episode of Designing Women. The former AJC sportswriter and columnist dominated the show. Then I caught up on the two newest episodes of Only Murders In the Building.

Wednesday: up early to lift weights at the gym. For the record, I counted 25 people working out.

Ceil and I both had our small groups Wednesday night. My leader Dan is just back from a days long hike to summit Mt Whitney, with our Sunday School teacher Brian. Whitney is the tallest US peak outside of Alaska, in southeastern California, south of Yosemite, west of Vegas. Dan shared some amazing stories from the trip.

Jeff Yearwood pastors FBC in Concord GA. He once said that he only preaches from Matthew. Mark, Luke, or John. He says there’s nothing wrong with the rest of the Bible, but that people don’t get enough of the gospels.  Last year the small groups in our Sunday School class that meet during the week studied Romans from early September to mid May. This year we are studying the book of Luke.

Last night our leader Dan had an object lesson for Luke 2:1 – he keeps an antique coin on his desk that dates back to the time of Christ’s birth, with the image of Caesar Augustus on it. This reminds Dan of how God can use earthly government rulers for His own purposes. A good reminder as we approach Election Day…regardless of who wins, God is in control.

A Cardinals fan was forced to throw away her MAGA cap before she was allowed entrance to the stadium. MAGA = “make America great again”. Is that offensive?  It’s the hat that Donald Trump wears. QUESTION: was it right that the usher refused to let her in to the football game wearing that cap? These days people wear caps out in public with cuss words and obscene symbols without any objections. Speaking of, explosives were just found at the site of tonight’s Trump campaign event in New York.

Are five teams of assassins hunting Trump? Three foreign, two domestic, according to a Department of Homeland Security whistleblower. One branch of the US government is literally waging war against another. This just keeps getting crazier and crazier.

A liberal group thinks one of the Presidential candidates is just pretending to take certain sides on issues in the campaign.

BREAKING NEWS: Tech is gonna lose to Louisville. No way they can win wearing blue pants. Jackets are 3-0 wearing white pants and 0-1 not wearing white pants. Seems like they’d have someone there to keep track of such things. Must I do everything ???!!!

Finished the week with “only“ 24 emails in my In Box, the lowest in a few weeks. Friday was a quiet day at work, but I still have like 8 big projects to do. With no overtime, I keep falling further and further behind.

The guys in the plant get all the cool toys.
