Buc-ee's: As Good as it Sounds?

One day last week C had wanted to get out of the house. I asked if she wanted to go to Buc-ee’s but she said no. Are you gonna get the fudge, the beef jerky, the BBQ, the Buc-ee brand sugar pops or t-shirts, or what? Would be fun to look, but all I think I’d be interested in would the soft drink selection and cheap gas. Maybe ice cream or BBQ. Like most things, it’s probably not as great as it sounds.

I wish the Calhoun Buc-ee’s had been open the month back in 2002 when I was driving back and forth to Chattanooga every day. Back then I stopped for gas at the same QuikTrip every morning, right off the interstate on the eastern side of the highway, just like Buc-ee’s is situated.  I would usually stop for breakfast at the Chickfila in Dalton or at one of two Hardees. On the way home I’d stop by Fuddruckers or Baskin Robbins. When I was in Little Rock for a month I usually stopped at the Subway on the way back to the hotel. Ate breakfast every morning at the hotel buffet. Those were the days.

Work: our complex has 26 people out with covid (or someone in their family has covid, and they have to quarantine). One department had zero people last night, and one important machine can’t run. The two guys on my team that have covid right now (for the second time) aren’t vaccinated. One does a decent amount of traveling around but is now grounded. His wife and kid have it. The other is one of the few people in our department who doesn’t come into the office.

Wednesday: busy at work. Can’t believe everyone took vacation over the holidays instead of working all the way through to catch up / get ahead. Worked till 550 pm again. Was on the phone with the help desk.

Got home and C and M were busy cooking supper: chicken parmesan, grilled kale with onions, and ravioli in tomato sauce. Very good.

While they prepared the meal I hung up like ten coats and coverings that were laying around the house. Took off my new clothes from Christmas and my nice sneakers. Put on my Crocs.

While we were eating there was a knock on the door. Pizza delivery guy came to Heritage Trace Drive instead of Heritage Trace View, which is around the corner. I sent him on his way. This happens quite often, with mail and even more with packages from UPS and Amazon. Once a landscaping company aerated and seeded our yard by mistake. That’s why I’m always careful to write out DRIVE whenever I am ordering something. Lords knows how much mail doesn’t get delivered that’s just addressed to “Heritage Trace” without the DRIVE or VIEW.

Yesterday was January 5th. Received a card in the mail. The sender had misspelled the word CHRISTMAS. Actually I have a couple of cards to still send out.

Great article by Lang about the national championship game. Funny that he worked in a reference to Doctor Doolittle.

Our Sunday School teacher, who is also on the church staff, does a good job of following the pastor’s lead. Couple months ago he “ordered” the class to get together an fellowship outside of class, sharing meals, etc. We already do that to a certain extent.

Denison: according to Pew Research Center, the number of atheists has risen from 2% in 2009 to 4% in 2019. The share of agnostics has increased from 3% ten years ago to 5% today. That leaves 91% who have faith in God. Some just have faith in faith. They’re “spiritual but not religious.” They believe that so long as we have faith in a “higher power,” a spiritual feeling of some sort, that is all the “religion” they need. 63 percent of American adults believe “having faith matters more than which faith you have.” This is the quintessential postmodern approach: to be tolerant of all faiths while requiring none. To think we can derive the benefits of believing in God or the gods without choosing any particular religion and its demands on us. Could you apply this logic to any other dimension in life? So long as you have faith in medicine, it doesn’t matter which medication you take. So long as you have faith in roads, it doesn’t matter which one you travel. So long as you have faith in people, it doesn’t matter which one you marry. Where in life does “faith in faith” work?

I read a similar article to Denison’s about knowing what happens when we die. Betty White appeared on Larry King in 2014 and said she didn’t know what happens. I know what will happen to me when I die.

PETE ROSE  [SABR Bio] holds the National League record for longest hitting streak, at 44, third behind DiMaggio’s 56 in 1941 and Willie Keeler’s 45 in 1896-97. Rose held the career record for reaching base on catcher’s interference until his 29 was passed in 2017 by Jacoby Ellsbury. Russ Nixon, who managed the Reds from 1982-83 and Rose (1984-1989) both went to Western Hills High School in Cincinnati. Vern Rapp managed the Reds between them, for 121 games.
