The Psalmist Faced: Sermon Topics

Bob Marsh was an all-around excellent pastor and preacher. Do you remember Marsh’s sermon about the dogs in his neighborhood? One of the dogs was named Buckhead. That’s where I got the idea to name our dog Speedle.

Who could forget Marsh’s infamous 1981 sermon series, where all the sermons were titled “The Psalmist Faced…(and the topic)”. Like “The Psalmist Faced…A Scowl”. Reid uncovered some of those very Psalmist Faced sermons from over 40 years ago…

The Psalmist Faces Fear            17 May Ps 29

The Psalmist Faces Anger          31 May Ps 38

The Psalmist Faced a Sneer        7 June Ps 73

The Psalmist Faced Bitterness     7 June Ps 73

The Psalmist Faced Guilt            14 June Ps 51

The Psalmist Faces Sorrow        28 June Ps 22

The Psalmist Faces Sorrow         12 July Ps 40

The Psalmist Faced Injustice       26 July Ps 82

The Psalmist Faced His Influence 2 Aug Ps 39

The Psalmist Faced The Future  27 Aug Ps 23

The Psalmist Faced Old Age      13 Sept Ps 81

Andy Stanley has several core topics he feels are so important that he cycles back and preaches about every couple of years. He is great at adding new material and examples to keep them fresh and relevant, but the sermons are about the same general aspect of Christianity. Probably a good idea. Why preach about some obscure verse or Bible story when the vast majority of those listening still need help with the basics? He also keeps them simple, usually with no more than three basic points for people to remember, than he repeats over and over.

My old friend Jeff Yearwood pastors the church he grew up in down in Concord GA. He says he only preaches from the Gospels, because the people need as much Jesus as they can get. He is right.

I will always remember the sermon Bill Self preached in May 1978 entitled the Hall of Mothers in the Bible. He would point to the left as if he was looking at a portrait on the wall of a certain mother in the Bible, and preach on her for five minutes – then point to the right and start preaching on a different Biblical mother.

I don’t remember many guest preachers is all. One at NPCC was Voddie Baucham. Talked about how Americans weren’t reproducing at a rate to keep population steady, much less growing. Especially Christians, who aren’t following God’s command to be fruitful and multiply – a commandment that was never rescended. America’s reproductive rate is much worse than peoples in other countries and religions. Christianity is always one generation form “extinction”. Bob Goff was another good preacher. Also John Piper and the guy who retired from C’s church, Crawford Lorritts, who has recently spoke at both JFBC and North Point.

The old Study Bible I got back in college fell apart a long time ago. I certainly don’t read the Bible as much as I should. I go back and forth between wanting to write in my Bible and not wanting to. Ceil has worn out a few Bibles as well, and has dozens of notebooks she’s scribbled in, going back from long before we were married.

For small group we’re studying Acts, and have a little notebook just of Acts on one side of the page, with the right side blank for notes. I write all over that. It’s the third or forth book of the Bible we’ve been through over the past few years, so those books are starting to pile up. Even though we have the Acts book and a Bible on my phone, I take my study Bible because of all the good notes and references it has. Nowadays instead of handwritten notes I like to type the notes on my phone, so I can have them to post on my blog.

I do have many pictures in my mind, memories from childhood and beyond. Memories. Our backyard. Walking home from school. Recess and in class. Football games. Playing in the snow. Church trips. Tech. Camp SPdL. Choir tours. Singles. Road trips. The kids in little league. Anna in ballet. I enjoy writing about them to keep the memories alive.

Very good Denison article today. Pretty sure Dan Reeves was a believer. Someone said he attended Peachtree Methodist. Andy Stanley wrote a little book entitled “How Good is Good Enough” that was given out at NPCC. Of course good is never enough.

Denison: C. S. Lewis wrote: “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, it is of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.” Billy Graham agreed: “If Christianity is important at all, then it is all-important. If it is anything at all, then it is everything. It is either the most vital thing in your life, or it isn’t worth bothering with.”

Tuesday: worked till 5:50 pm then drove straight home. C was gone to her ladies ministry. Winnie was super crazy. Took a while to calm her down. Cooked BBQ brisket quesadillas.

Watched Jeopardy and another episode of Man In The Arena on ESPN+ about Tom Brady’s career. This one was about his relationship with his wife, and first having kids. One of the things that attracted them to each other was their shared love of family. Both have Catholic backgrounds.

JOSE CANSECO  [SABR Bio] was the first Devil Ray position player to make the All-Star team, in AL ASG in 1999. He didn’t play due to injury. It was his sixth and final AS appearance. His Rookie of the Year award in Oakland was followed by two more, the only time that’s ever happened in the American League. ROY in 1986 for the A’s followed by Mark McGwire and Walt Weiss. Only the Dodgers (1992-96) have a longer consecutive streak. A famous Poster seen here, styled to imitate the Blue Brothers poster of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd (Actual original bash).

Shivonne is getting good at her tongue exercises.
