Dawgs & Jackets Beat Cats & Cats

After a tight first half, UGA pulled away from Clemson.

Georgia State put up a decent fight, but Tech kept banging. Jackets won decisively  Would've liked to see the GT backup QB get into the game late. Maybe next week.

I like how Brent Key likes to run the ball. The Jackets run it well. Sets up the pass. Just wish GT social media had better action photos that I could steal.

Was listening to the first half on the radio5 on the drive home.  Took me a while to find the game on the radio. Whoever named "Tech legend" Joe Hamilton as the color commentator must not listen to the games. He gets so tongue tied that he can't finish his thoughts. Sometimes he just gives up and stops talking mid sentence.

Hi, I'm John Ed Mathison, and a good Monday to you! Dylan Raiola got a lot of publicity when he reported to football camp in Nebraska. He decided to have a personal look reminiscent of Patrick Mahomes, three times Super Bowl winning quarterback. He wore ski glasses and had his hair cut similar to that of Mahomes. He also is going to wear Mahomes #15 jersey, and he says he tries to pattern a lot of his game after Mahomes. Actually, Raiola originally made a commitment to Ohio State, and then flipped to Georgia, and then flipped to Nebraska because his dad was an offensive lineman at Nebraska. Physically looking like Mahomes is interesting, but if he can play like him, he will be a superstar. When you want to be like somebody, it's not best to try to look like them physically but imitate them in terms of character and talent. Performance outshines anything else.

Not a fan of this Raiola dude. Sure he's just an 18 year old kid, acting like his idol instead of trying to be his own person. Mahome's hairstyle looks better than Raiola's previous hairstyle. At least he's not wearing number one, like he did in high school. So many people were wary of prima donna QB's wearing number one. Raiola committed to Ohio State and then UGA, before changing his mind a second time. Raiola wanted the starting job guaranteed for him, and at UGA he would've had to compete against two highly touted QBs who had more experience, including a returning starter. I think Kirby Smart was glad to see him go.

So Saturday I flipped over to watch some of the Nebraska game, against Texas El Paso. Raiola finished the game with a 78.3 total QB rating, ranked 34th in the nation.

UGA QB Carson Beck riddled a tough Clemson defense with a 91.7 QBR, 9th best in the country. Beck has worn number 15 for five seasons, since before Mahomes became everyone's hero.

Speaking of QB's, FSU QB DJU was horrible again last night. FSU got beat by Boston College. DJ was so bad that "FSU QB" was trending on Twiiter (his poor play was the talk of the country). DJU's QBR plummeted to 48.0 – ranked 81st overall. I'm told that FSU lured DJU to Tallahassee with a million dollars in NIL money. DJ does rank ahead of Clemson QB Cade Klubnik, who only managed a 40.8 QBR (87th) against a tough UGA defense.

Heisman favorite / Texas QB Quin Ewers only managed a 71.9 QBR, and left the game early. Let's see if his appearance in the Dr. Pepper ads will help or hurt his candidacy.

Since Notre Dame beat Texas A&M, some think that guarantees the Irish a birth in the 12 team playoff. Not so fast.

I finally watched the ESPN 30+30 about the Miami @ Notre Dame "Catholics vs Convicts game. Interesting background about how the about the famous t-shirt came to be. Interviews with players, coaches (including Lou Holtz and Jimmy Johnson), and Brent Musburger.

ORLANDO CEPEDA [SABR Bio] was the first NL player to be voted MVP in his first full season with his new team, right after being traded. Cepeda was traded from SFG to STL for P Ray Sadecki in 1966. Cepeda was the unanimous NL MVP in 1967. Six years later, playing for Boston in the first game of the DH Era, Cepeda came to bat as DH on 06‑Apr‑1973 the leadoff batter in the bottom of the second. The Yankees' DH Ron Blomberg had come to bat in the top of the 1st to become history's first DH. Cepeda and some teammates hitchhiked home from the airport after a victorious flight home from winning the franchise's first pennant in their new city. It was poorly-timed since the World Series opened the very next day. Along with Willie McCovey and Billy Pierce, Orlando thumbed home from the San Francisco International Airport into the city because of the lack of alternate transportation. Not sure how long they had to wait before being picked up. Of the three, only Cepeda played in Game One, going 0 for 4 with a strikeout.
