“Not Ashamed” Romans 1;8-17
The purpose of Romans: to strengthen us in the gospel.
V 14 a debtor under obligation. I am entrusted to give to others
I Cor 2 to both the wise and the foolish.
Why we can feel ashamed...
1. I am not ashamed of the gospel.
2. The gospel is the power of God for salvation – the deliverance from eternal death.
3. Good people go to hell. Mark 8:38
Mark 2:17 I am not good
John 14:6 the gospel is exclusive
4. Suffering is expected.
John 12:42-43 they loved the approval of men more than God.
Moving forward
1. Be ready – spiritually prepared
2. Be eager, with desire
3. Be bold

Romans 1:18-23 What is Wrong with Me?
Next week: the first of 7 baptism services in 2025.
Some men don’t like to go to the doctor. They’re afraid of getting bad news. But doctors are the path to healing.
This passage helps us to heal spiritually. Transparency leads to transformation. The Bible isn’t a bunch of random passages, it is knitting together so we may come to know God.
What is Wrong with us? Three things.
1. I suppress the truth. Notice the word “for” like in verse 16. Paul supports his argument. The righteousness of God is revealed in these verses. Martin Luther would plead to God for hours. He read these verses and finally accepted that he had right standing with God because of Christ on the cross, beginning the Protestant Reformation.
v 18 for the wrath of God is being revealed. People don’t like that phrase. God is never out of control. He hates sin so much that he sent Jesus to conquer sin. We deserve the wrath of God, so we suppress this truth instead of doing what we should do.
Criminals will say the dumbest things. The truth always wants to come out. God has given us a conscious so we’ll know internally what is right and wrong.
2. I am without excuse…v 20 for not accepting God’s forgiveness, His eternal power and attributes. Creation points us to God. God has his fingerprints on the world. No one says “isn’t evolution amazing” when you are on a hike and you find a gold watch. Not acknowledging a Creator is suppressing the truth. With the Bible we have no excuse to not see God and what he’s done.
We tend to not blame ourselves for our sin. We blame others. We deserve the wrath of God.
3. I am a wise fool. We should know better v 21-23 no longer present tense but now past tense. 1 Cor 1:20
Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one thanked him. We rationalize sinful thinking. That’s the culture we live in. People don’t want to acknowledge their sin. v 23 we exchange glory for corruptible images and idols. That’s what Adam and Eve did, that is what we do. We must deal with the wrath of God.
In the song “In Christ Alone” the line “on the cross the wrath of God was satisfied “…why Christ had to die on the cross. That’s the gospel.
Three questions to pray about…
1. Am I intentionally ignoring or rejecting God’s revealed truth? Loving your neighbor?
2. Do I understand the severity of sin? Look in the mirror. Am I proud of my walk with Jesus?
3. Am I more motivated by my glory, or God’s glory? What is driving my life? Tough stuff.
Pray the BOB prayer: God give me a Burden for those who do not know you, an Opportunity to be with people who do not know you, and the Boldness to share the gospel with those who do not know you.
