Respect

The Masters telecast seemed different this year. Better, New angles, better showing the varying elevations and hills. Also all the drone shots from overhead gave a completely different and new views.

Early in the afternoon, I suppose around when Xander double bogeyed hole five, a guy I know posted that that final round would be without drama. He was so wrong that I think he went back and deleted his comment. That’s something that turns me off about social media. That and people misspelling the Masters’ winner’s name.

Rory McIlroy recently visited Tiger Woods, and made an interesting observation.

Six Masters “traditions” that didn’t last, from a parade to a beauty pageant. Some, like the parade, were put on by the city, not the tournament. All these were in the book I recently read.

Five Masters and Augusta National Golf Club rules every patron must follow.

Friday: long busy day at work. C cooked hamburger patties in onions, and baked small potato wedges. Also tossed a salad.

Saturday: rain. Homemade chicken salad sandwich for lunch. Crashed on the couch to watch the Masters. Picked up a Mexican takeout combo meal to split with C.

Sunday: 8 am zoom call with missionary couple on the other side of the planet, then on line worship. Later C had a meeting at the Table on Delk. I watched the Masters. Chicken salad sandwich for lunch and later popcorn. Supper was stir fry and black eyed peas, with fresh fruit. (above).

Later we watched some of the Braves game, and the ESPN special on Freddie Freeman’s life. His mom died of cancer when he was ten. Later his dad had a heart attack and almost died. Drafted by the Braves. Got married. Had a kid. Then infertility problems. Then covid, then the MVP year. Then two more babies. Hopefully he will re-sign with the Braves.

Hadn't realized the thing between Acuna and the Phillies second-baseman goes back before this year.
Max Fried looks different this year,
but he's pitching just as well.

Braves part-time hitting instructor Chipper Jones was in uniform Sunday night to present Freddie with his MVP award.
I heard there was a bad call last night.

DICK WILLIAMS [SABR Bio] stripped Carl Yastrzemski of his captaincy. In the season Williams managed the Red Sox to the AL pennant 1967, he applied considerable tough love which included stripping Yaz of his captaincy because Williams “…wanted everybody to play as an equal.” Yaz responded by posting the highest WAR of a season in the 20th century for anyone not named Babe Ruth. Williams was the manager who converted Rollie Fingers from a starter to a reliever. Managing Oakland in 1971-73, Williams once again applied his methods. Rollie Fingers started eight games in 1971 and then had exactly 2 starts in the remaining 10 seasons of his 14-year Hall of Fame career. Once more, Williams’ tactics succeeded, as the A’s won three straight World Series championships 1972-74. Only one pitcher in major league history struck out 21 batters in a single game: Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators on 12-Sep-1962 pitched all 16 innings of a game against the Orioles. The final out of the game was a backwards K by Hall of Famer Dick Williams. The Senators won the game with a solo HR in the top of the 16th by the immortal Bud Zipfel in the 108th game of his brief 118-game career.

Denison: the chaplain of the US House of Representatives recently followed the example of the apostles before the Sanhedrin (Acts 5:29–32). When the House approved a coronavirus relief package almost entirely on party lines, she prayed in their presence: “Forgive them, all of them. For when called upon to respond to a once-in-a-century pandemic that has rocked our country, upended its economy and widened the chasm of partisan opinion, they have missed the opportunity to step above the fray and unite to attend to this national crisis.”
