Bo = Uggla = Kingman

People talk about what a great baseball player Bo Jackson was. Not so fast. Dave Kingman struck out a lot less than Bo. Dan Uggla struck out less, and reached base more. People never talk about putting Kingman into the hall of fame. Two sport athletes Brian Jordan and Deion Sanders struck out at less than half the rate Bo did, and had higher averages.

If that rookie Ynoa keeps pitching and hitting like he has, I’m going to have to learn his name.  The Braves drew closer to the division lead, just a game and a half out of first place.

Found a website that makes up Atlanta Flames jerseys for $80 shipped: www.503sports.com (on 5-03 they had a sale). I sure don’t need one, but wonder which jersey I’d get – not a single digit number, for sure. Tom Lysiak was #12, but I don’t like that number. Don’t want a number one jersey, even if it is Olympic hero Jim Craig.

Ceil has been doing a great job with the plants around the house. Has it looking good.

Monday: left work not long after 5 pm. Still stormy out. Took my regular route south on Peachtree Industrial, then right on Spaulding. Traffic was slow headed through Peachtree Corners but I didn’t think much of it. But Holcomb Bridge was blocked by police both ways. Had to continue straight on Spaulding through Dunwoody. Crossed over 400 and Roswell Road and on to Johnson Ferry, then on to church for small group. John 19, the crucifixion, death, and burial of Christ. Only three more meetings before the summer break.

Was home by 8:30. Ceil had a tough day, and went to bed early. I stayed up to finish my Doris Kearnes Goodwin book that was expiring. Then watched some Seinfeld.

Tuesday: worked from before 8 am through lunch, past 5:30 pm. On the way home I decided to go for the free McDonalds caramel fudge McFlurry. Not bad. Had to download the app, which has decent specials. Now I gotta cash in coupons for a free ice cream cone, a free pizza, free car wash, and free haircut.

Had been planning on eating out last night, but after the McFlurry I went home and fixed a chicken salad sandwich. Had to stop by Kroger for bread. Somehow a loaf of bread, box of saltines, Hunt’s ketchup, and mustard was only five busks.

Watched more Seinfeld. Ceil came home from the table and watched with me. Jerry got a date with Miss Rhode Island, and got Kramer to be their chaperone. Kramer knew so much about the Miss America pageant because he’s watched it every year since he was six. She hired Kramer to be her advisor. Her act was magic, and had trained doves for six years. Jerry accidentally killed the birds, and the girl had to sing instead of magic.

Chickfila has added the Arnold Palmer to their menu, though they call it Sunjoy.

Denison: a new policy went into effect requiring clergy and religious leaders in China to (1) “support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, (2) support the socialist system,” and (3) “practice the core values of socialism” while (4) adhering to the “autonomous management of religion.” As a result Chinese Communist officials removed Bible apps and public Christian WeChat accounts. Hard copy Bibles are no longer available for sale online. Communist authorities closed Catholic Church-run children’s homes and orphanages and have ordered Christians to fly the Chinese flag and sing patriotic songs in their services. A recent publication includes China among 62 countries, comprising 2/3 of the world’s population, that violate religious freedom. Finland is not on the list, but a member of its parliament is facing six years imprisonment for allegedly committing three crimes, including “hate speech.” A medical doctor and the mother of five, she has publicly voiced her opinion defending biblical sexual morality. One of her “crimes” was quoting Romans 1:24–27, a tweet for which she was accused of hate speech and interrogated by the police.

DON LARSEN [SABR Bio] as an Oriole, returned to the clubhouse after being shelled in a game only to tear the clubhouse apart when he found that someone had stolen his Flash Gordon comic book. On 19-Jul-1954, BOS hung 8 ER on Larsen in just over 3 innings. He holds the record for the current Baltimore Orioles for the most losses in a season. In 1954 Larsen had a record of 3-21, to lead the majors in that latter department. His manager that year said, “The only thing (he) fears is sleep.” Larsen’s manager with Baltimore was Jimmy Dykes and was, by turns, amused and amazed by Larsen. His nickname, Gooney Bird, was given to him by his Yankees teammates in recognition of his widely known rambunctiousness.

Things Baby Boomers Still Think Are Cool. Just shows the adversarial nature of some millennials. In fact (a) Boomers don’t care what younger generations think, (b) most Boomers have adapted to new technology and moved on from cargo shorts and dad sneakers, and (c) younger generations have their own sets of issues, and have no room to talk.

The high price of missing on first-round quarterback. Sets a franchise back five years. For every high first round draft pick QB that succeeds, two don’t. The Falcons got lucky with Matt Ryan. Michael Vick only started 16 games for the Falcons one year (and 15 games in three of his other five seasons). His record was 38-27-1, but only 15-16 in his last two seasons.
