Peyton, Cooper, & Herschel

Cooper Manning has often told the story of when he and Peyton were young boys in December 1980. Their mom was pregnant, so Archie took the boys with him to a Sugar Bowl committee function, where they met UGA freshman sensation Herschel Walker. Later the parents asked the boys what they should name their baby brother. Cooper and Peyton wanted his name to be Herschel Walker Manning. Instead their parents named their baby Eli.

Peyton Manning’s nephew Arch (Cooper’s son) is the top QB prospect for the 2023 recruiting class. He’s considering most of the major powers, including UGA, Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, LSU – and Ole Miss.

Good photos of Herschel’s career. When Bob Hope introduced the All-America team each year, I wonder how many of his quips were retreads from previous years. I wonder if people get tired of me posting about Herschel. I’m sure the Tech fans do.

Radio host Dennis Prager notes that if the Israelis lay down their guns, Israel would be destroyed tomorrow; if the Palestinians were to lay down their guns, there would be peace tomorrow. Good Denison column on Israel:

Probably a longshot lawsuit, but sounds like the January Senate runoff election was in violation of Georgia law.

CECIL COOPER  [SABR Bio] holds the record for most hits in a season for the Milwaukee Brewers. Had 219 hits in 1980. Managed HOU 2007-2009. He, Sam Horn and six other players have “Sam Horns” on their baseball CVs. His was on Flag Day. The “Sam Horn” also known as the “Titanium Sombrero” is the feat of striking out six times in a single game. All 8 were done in extra-inning games. All 6 of Cooper’s were at the hands of Nolan Ryan, four were the last out of the inning. Cooper & Don Money had grand slams in the 2nd inning on 12-Apr-1980. Yount followed Money’s with a solo shot.

At the age of 33, Steph Curry secured his second NBA scoring title. Between 1986 and 1998 Michael Jordan played ten full seasons – and led the league in scoring all ten years. MJ also was first-team all-defense nine times, and defensive player of the year in 1988. Monday night Will wore his red and black Air Jordans to the Braves game.

Sunday School at Johnson Ferry. Psalm 46: God is my refuge and strength, as well as Be still and know that I am God. Good discussion in a small group with Jim, Larry, David, and Jamie. Watched Passion City Church on line. Sermon was not letting the enemy take a seat at your table. Need to listen to the JFBC sermon, on the evils of social media. Went for a haircut Sunday afternoon.

Monday: Will went to the Braves game with me. A fun night out, thought the ballpark was littered with Mets fans. I was hot, since I had to go to the game in my dress shirt and slacks. Stayed up late afterwards, trying to get Winnie to sleep.

Anna had eaten supper with Ceil. She’d driven up to meet Winnie. Anna had returned from Colorado on Sunday. Her friend Caleb had picked her up at the airport.

Matthew went to the driving range with a friend. I’ll have to take him golfing with me and Will.
