Classic Poetry

I was reminded of two old poems:

When Hydrogen Tech played Oxygen U

The game had just begun

When Hydrogen scored two quick points

And Oxygen still had none.

Then Oxygen scored a single point

And thus it did remain

At Hydrogen 2 and Oxygen one

Called because of rain.

Another poem that Fred O and Norman used to recite:

What an amazing bird is the pelican

His bill can hold more than his belly can

Food for a week he can hold in his beak

But I’m darned if I know how the hell he can.

At last Thursday’s Braves game, Joel Norman was picked for the “steal a base” challenge. He had to run from the right field corner to behind second base, grab the base they’d placed there, and run back before the timer expired. Running in Nike high-tops, Joel slipped at the start, but recovered and beat the clock to win.

Braves win again. They oftentimes struggle again the Marlins. Ynoa was activated today, which is better than making a trade. Ian Anderson should be back soon.

On Sunday morning Winnie jumped up on our bed for the first time. On her first attempt she kinda made it halfway, and I pulled her up. She was so happy with herself that the next time she made it all the way on her own. Tomorrow she is 5 months old. Plenty of puppy still in her.

This morning about 5:30 I heard Winnie. She had scrambled over the gate keeping her in the bathroom. He came around and put her front paws up on my side of the bed. I grabbed onto the harness she wears and lifted her onto the bed. She’s found out how comfortable our bed is.

Every morning she listens for when I’m out of the shower getting dressed, and she comes back upstairs to play. I try to get her to go back downstairs. Today she hopped down several steps to where the stairs turn, and ran down the rest of the way.

Ceil is going to give art lessons to Jimmy Ewing’s daughter.

UGA QB JT Daniels signed an endorsement deal with Zaxbys. He’s also earning $100 per autograph. The Clemson QB signed a deal with Bojangles. Both he and Daniels are from California and relatively new to Southern food. Auburn QB Bo Nix signed a deal with Milo’s Sweet Tea. Bama QB Bryce Young has yet to start a game, but has almost a million dollars in endorsements.

This weekend in a debate about the best backfields (Dorsett & Walker vs Bo Jackson & Marcus Allen) someone claimed Herschel “didn’t do much in Dallas.” In Herschel’s first three years in Dallas he (1) set the Cowboys rookie receiving record, catching the second-most passes for any running back in NFL history, (2) led the NFL in rushing + receiving yards, and (3) gained 2019 yards rushing + receiving, for a total of 5199 yards in three seasons. That was 66% more than Bo gained in his entire career, and 571 more yards than Marcus Allen gained in his first three years.

A Steelers fan claimed Herschel was over-rated. Walker averaged 1090 yards per season rushing and receiving, only 18 fewer yards per season than Franco Harris, who’d been surrounded by hall of famers in the offensive huddle. That doesn’t include Herschel’s 5088 NFL return yards – another 420 yards per season.

Coworker is just now slowly getting over covid after over a week. He used up his five sick days and is now back working from home. He is weak and has a cough, and lost his sense of smell and taste. Says everything tastes salty.

Guy in Sunday School about my age has been in the hospital with covid, in ICU on the respirator. He was getting better and they took him out of ICU, but then moved him back. Scary.

Monday: left work around 5:15. Supper was BBQ chicken, tossed salad, and mashed potatoes. Went to bed at 9:30 pm. Didn’t get up until almost 6:30. My back hurt from being in the bed so long.
