Field of Dreams

Watch the Field of Dreams game last night? I enjoyed the pregame. When the White Sox and Yankees walked in past Kevin Cosner, it was similar to the scene in the movie when the ghost players nodded their appreciation to Cosner and Moonlight Graham. Could’ve done without Joe Buck.

Smoltz wore a period cap. Dressed like Terrance Mann. You’d think the players could’ve not worn their white shoes with the nice throwback uniforms. Cool scoreboard.

Sure a yearly Field of Dreams game would be nice. And the game in Williamsport PA during the Little League World Series. They usually have a game in Mexico. There used to be an exhibition game in Cooperstown the week of the HOF inductions. Should make that a regular season game. Someone suggested a game in Birmingham’s historic Rickwood Field to honor the Negro Leagues. How about a game in Durham to honor the movie Bull Durham? Or in Macon to honor the Bingo Long movie?

Worked past 5;30, then hustled home. Anna and Caleb came for supper. Burgers, fries, sweet potato fries, broccoli, tossed salad, and two flavors of Jeni’s ice cream. A good time. By the time they left and we finished cleaning the kitchen, it was 10:30. I slept well. Been having lots of dreams. Last night I dreamt we crammed eight people in a car. One of the girls was actress Katie Holmes. Night before last my dream was a Western.

Both Caleb and Anna each brought a bottle of wine. Anna opened per bottle of white wine. After the meal I realized we hadn’t opened the bottle Caleb had brought. Reminded me of the Seinfeld when the Constanza’s had brought a cake to Susan’s parent’s house. Since the cake wasn’t eaten after the meal, George’s dad Frank snuck out the cake when he was leaving.

OREL HERSHISER [SABR Bio] a one-time Met, he’s the only pitcher to plunk four batters within the space of three outs. On 19-Apr-2000 Hershiser was removed in the 2nd inning following the fourth HBP. Hershiser hit Astro OF Richard Hidalgo twice and when Dodger teammate Matt Herges also hit him later that same game, it enabled Hidalgo to tie the major league single-game record for HBPs in a single gameco-held by 28 others. Hershiser was the winning pitcher of Rick Sutcliffe’s single loss with the Cubs in 1984, on 29-Jun-1984 Sutcliffe’s CYA-year record with the Cubs was 16-1. Hershiser is the only player to win both a NLCS MVP and an ALCS MVP. Won the 1988 NLCS MVP as LAD eliminated NYM. Won the 1995 ALCS MVP as CLE as dropped SEA to move on to the WS.

Today’s Denison column defines seven cultural terms and quotes applicable verses in response: wokeness, postmodern relativism, critical race theory, the equality act, cultural appropriation, political correctness, and cancel culture.

The column also addresses Bill Maher: “Historically, Bill Maher has been outspoken against religion Last month Maher lambasted the Olympics for its “wokeness.” He cited the “cultural appropriation” charges leveled against surfing and blamed cancel culture for forcing several officials to resign for small things said or done decades ago. Maher likened the woke actions to Stalin's reign of censorship and terror. His comparison reminds us of the critique of those ideas by George Orwell in 1984 and Animal Farm. One key concept in these classic works is their exploration of language. If the state controls the meaning of truth and language and is able to force citizens to believe that 2+2=5, then tyranny reigns.”
