Mahomes: Top 5 All Time?

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is the toughest to gain entrance to. Peyton Manning made news by saying Patrick Mahomes has already accomplished enough in his first six seasons to make the PFHOF. Maybe he has, though most voters except a slightly longer career. Of players with such short careers, only Gale Sayers and Terrell Davis have earned entry into Canton.

What gets me are all the “experts” who claim Mahomes is an all-time top five QB. Not so fast. Nice that he’s made it to three Super Bowls (winning two) but youngsters today aren’t remembering how Brady, Bradshaw, Staubach, Montana, and Otto Graham all have more. Johnny Unitas and Brett Favre aren’t slouches, either. Or Peyton Manning.

Of course, Peyton and Patrick are fast friends. Mahomes appeared on the most recent episode of Peyton's Places, where a helicopter dropped thousands of Super Balls on the Arrowhead Stadium parking lot. After watching his kids play with Super Balls, Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt got the idea to rename the fledgling NFL/AFL Championship Game the Super Bowl.

I hear Tiger might play at Doral in the next couple of weeks. At Doral he can commute from his home up the coast. As Tiger got into the tournament last week his limp was becoming less noticeable. Jim Nance was saying that each night during the tournament Woods was having to ice his leg for several hours.

Some expect Dansby to have a “stellar” year. He is more likely to struggle. In Atlanta he was surrounded by better hitters. In Chicago he will be expected to carry the Cubs lineup, and pitchers can pitch around him. Plus like so many free agent acquisitions, Swanson will be pressing in an effort to justify his huge contract. I predict he will have a below average year. Heck, last year he only slashed 277/329/447/776, with a career 255/321/417/738. His career high OPS was 809, which is nice but far from stellar. He’s made one all star team in seven seasons, with one Gold Glove. The Braves were right to not pay Dansby the $177 million the Cubs so foolishly threw at him. Even with the loss of Swanson, the Braves are expected by most experts to be the best team in the NL, ahead of the free-spending Dodgers, Phillies, and Mets.

RED SCHOENDIENST [SABR Bio] led the National League in doubles in 1950 even though his teammate Stan Musial hit 41. Schoendienst had 43. His Cards won the World Series in 1946. Traded to the Braves, he was a key part of the team that brought Milwaukee its only championship in 1957. He suffered through a broken finger, pleurisy, and bruised ribs during 1958. His pleurisy, etc., happened during the 1958 season. In 1959, his doctor confirmed that Schoendienst had developed tuberculosis & probably had been playing with it for years. After sitting out the 1959 season, he soldiered on and played until 1963.

Not much to report. Last night M cooked a spicy meatball spaghetti, with homemade sauce.

Lifted weights at the gym this morning. Tomorrow morning I should be able to squeeze in a round of golf. There’s a yard sale at the Catholic church in Roswell I want to stop by. Need to get the oil changed in my car. Might run another errand as well. Also laundry.
