The Best Ways to Drive Across Country – WSJ. Things like this always fascinate me. One of these days.
The Braves traveled down to play at the Blue Jays spring training stadium in Dunedin Florida, and must’ve thought they were playing exhibition games again. I was mixed up with Toronto because didn’t the Hawks play the Raptors in Tampa not long ago? Plus my friend Marshall had retired to Florida. He works for the Braves in spring training, so he went to two of the games to see the Braves. Then on Sunday he went to the Rays game in Tampa.
Not a good weekend, but the Braves are still only two games out of first place. In the division, only the Nationals have a better record than Atlanta in their last ten games. Both Fried and Newcomb come back this week. Pache returned and hit a grand slam. Riley is still hot. 134 more games to go.
Today the Braves had an off-day in DC. The relief pitchers rode bikes on the national mall, led by tour guide Luke Jackson (below).
Got home from work on Friday. C wanted to go explore the Roswell Mill. We’ve lived a couple of miles from the Roswell Square for over 25 years and have never been. Some nice trails by a creek, and a large waterfall. Afterwards we split a burger at Movie Burger, out on their back deck.
Friday night at 9 pm we got on a zoom call with our missionary friends in southeast Asia. The mom is traveling cross country with her young kids, to rescue a daughter from an abusive family.
Friday night Anna went to Little Rey. Her friend goes to church at the Johnson Ferry startup in Buckhead, where Ashley Corbett goes. Will’s brother-in-law Thomas and wife Holly go there as well. Last week Matthew was over at W&MC’s house, and they invited Anna over to grill burgers. Nice that they get together so often. Hope to see them this weekend.
Saturday: ate late breakfast of grits, toast, and scrambled eggs. Housework. Laundry, Dishes. Yardwork. Anna drove up for supper. She convinced Ceil to make burgers instead of meatloaf.
Later a rare Netflix movie, instead of Hallmark.
In person Sunday School for the first time in 13 months, with 32 in attendance, in a large room with chairs spaced out. Stayed for worship. Ceil cooked spaghetti for dinner, with a tossed salad. Took a nap. Cut the grass. Finished my Niekro book.
Pressley Harvin will have to win the job in Pittsburgh. Welcome to the NFL. Hope he likes the cold. My buddy Danny Smith is still the Pittsburgh special teams coordinator. He coached at GT back in the 90's with George O'Leary.
Denison: how can we experience God’s holiness in our lives that we wish to see in the world? (1) Expect temptation to find you (Matthew 4:1–11 and 1 Peter 5:8), (2) pray for help to the One who is praying for you (Romans 8:34 and Micah 6:8), and (3) offer others the grace you have received (Matthew 28:19). The key to being like Jesus is staying close to Jesus.
CHUCK DRESSEN [SABR Bio] was a major league manager with two pennants to his credit, and had been the quarterback for the team that became the Chicago Bears. Dressan played for 2 football teams, the Decatur Staleys 1919–1920 & the Racine Legion of the NFL in 1922–1923. The Decatur team became the Bears; his coach there was George Halas. Dressan won NL flag with Brooklyn 1952-53. He managed the Oakland Oaks to the Pacific Coast League pennant two years after Casey Stengel did. Dressan managed the Oaks in 1950. Stengel had in 1948. The two then faced each other as managers in the WS in 1952 and 1953. He was replaced as a manager after demanding a multi-year contract. Dressen was replaced by Walter Alston who managed the Dodgers, on one year contracts, for longer than anyone else in the history of that franchise: 3,658 games over 23 years. Alston was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1983.
Life tips. I hate the word “hacks”, a word that didn’t used to exist.
1. Set alarms / reminders for everything. Being late and forgetting shows you don’t care about the only person.
2. If someone wants to schedule a call, send a Google calendar invite. Don’t invite someone an hour ahead of time, to meet somewhere 30 minutes away, at a time they’re probably already doing something else (unless you don’t really want to meet).
3. Group your activities together – don’t bounce between different tasks. Run five arrands while you’re out, instead of going out and coming back, then repeating the process four more times. Run errands on the way how from work, not on weekends when you can be doing something else.
4. Start your day knocking out your hardest tasks, not answering emails.
5. Do free work for someone you really want to learn from.
6. Save more than you spend.
7. Build your personal brand online.
8. Schedule time to relax. Get plenty of sleep.
9. Delegate as much as possible. I always remember driving down Peachtree back in the early 80’s with Fred O singing “Delegate! Delegate! Delegate Authority!” to the tune of Three Dog Night’s 1970 hit “Celebrate”.
10. Stay open and humble. Share. Give back.
This morning one of our company trucks was stopped outside the Waffle House on PIB at Medlock Bridge.
